What’s the best way to keep strawberries fresh? A fair test conducted by Amy Dellosta 2012
Question for investigation• What is the best way to store supermarket bought strawberries to keep them fresh (not mushy, mouldy or excreting moisture) longer?
Predictions…• I predict that the strawberries kept in the foil in the fridge be the first ones to go mushy and mouldy.• I predict that the strawberries in the fridge in the bowl with paper towel will stay fresh longest.
Things to be kept the same• Purchase date of strawberries
• Number of strawberries in each group 3 strawberries relatively same shape and size in each group
• Storage position-All strawberries kept in same fridge, on same shelf
What is to be measured?• The freshness of the strawberries is to be measured. I will be documenting how many days it takes for each group of strawberries to have one strawberry that becomes mushy, leaves moisture on a surface and/or becomes moudly.
What is to change?• The way the strawberries are stored. There will be 4 different storage solutions• 1. Airtight circular container with lid.
• 2. Ceramic bowl, lined with paper towel, no covering
• 3. Supermarket packaging. Square plastic container, with air holes top and bottom.
Equipment• 4 groups of 3 Strawberries bought on the same day and roughly the same sizes• Fridge• Airtight plastic container• Foil• Bowl• Paper towel• Supermarket container
Procedure1. Sort strawberries into 4 groups of 3 strawberries, roughly same sizes2. Place each group into designated container3. Place all containers/storage into fridge on same shelf4. Check and film strawberries daily for change
