MANUFACTURING FUNDAMENTALS FOR
NEW PRODUCT DESIGN: COMPUTER MOUSE

HISTORY OF COMPUTER MOUSE
❖ Development of the mouse began in
the early 1960s by Stanford Research
Institute's Douglas Engelbart, while
he was exploring the interactions
between humans and computers.
❖ Bill English, then the chief engineer at
SRI, built the first computer mouse
prototype in 1964.
The first mouse prototype in the
hands of its creator: Dr. Douglas
C. Engelbart.
INTRODUCTION
❖ A computer mouse (plural mice,
sometimes mouses) is a hand-
held pointing device that detects two-
dimensional motion relative to a surface.
This motion is typically translated into the
motion of a pointer on a display, which
allows a smooth control of the graphical
user interface of a computer.
❖ Mice originally used two separate wheels
to track movement across a surface; one
in the X-dimension and one in the Y. Later,
the standard design shifted to utilize a ball
rolling on a surface to detect motion.

MANUFACTURING PROCESS
❖ First, the Printed Circuit Board(PCB) is created using a sillicon chip board
or a flexible paper backing, on which lies all the electronics of the
mouse.
❖ The mouse frame and other parts like buttons, roller wheel are
made using ABS mould.
❖ The wire is attached to the mouse circuit and tested. If the computer
mouse uses wireless technology, the nano reciever is plugged in test
machine. Faulty pieces are discarded.
❖ The PCB, casing and buttons are put together on the mouse frame.
❖ The mouse is calliberated and optimized. A final quality check is done
where ergonomics, design flaws, functioning is checked and the
product is dispatched for packaging.
INTRODUCTION
❖ Most modern mice use optical sensors that have
no moving parts. Though originally all mice were
connected to a computer by a cable,
many modern mice are cordless, relying on short-
range radio communication with the connected
system.
❖ In addition to moving a cursor, computer mice
have one or more buttons to allow operations such
as the selection of a menu item on a display. Mice
often also feature other elements, such as touch
surfaces and scroll wheels, which enable
additional control and dimensional input.

TYPE OF MANUFACTURING
❖The type of manufacturing comes
under mass type. Because the number
of computer mouse produced are in
large number (i.e. above 10,000 units).
❖Logitech International is one of the
largest manufacturer of computer
mouses and other computer
peripherals.
SALE OF LOGITECH MOUSE
❖ The sales growth of Logitech computer
peripherals is of 3 millionfrom 2016 to 2021(5
year).
❖ The company has sold significantly
and has the highest sales volume in
the year 2021.
MARKETING STRATEGY: LOGITECH
❖ Logitech's center of manufacturing is in Suzhou, China, with supplemental
manufacturing in other parts of China, including contract manufacturing.
❖ The company has an immensely vast chain of distributors in various cities in
India like Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Pune, etc.
❖ Logitech’s product strategy is focused on the screens that people use as their
window into their digital world. We study how people use their screens (laptop
PC or Mac, tablet, TV, smartphone and meeting room screens) and create
products that enhance their experience with those screens, whether they are
using them as consumers or as participants in a business or enterprise.
❖ Logitech’s portfolio of consumer products have much in common – the most
important being that they provide the interface between people and what
they want to accomplish or experience in the digital world.
LEAN PRODUCTION
AGILE MANUFACTURING: Agile
manufacturing is a manufacturing
methodology that places an extremely
strong focus on rapid response to the
customerturning speed and agility into
a key competitive advantage.
The agile manufacturing in mouse can
be done like which types of features are
generally used in market or example
like today in market there is huge
demand of high response time, high
ergonomicsand fast performance
quieter gaming mouses with RGB lights
and multifunctional buttons.
JUST IN TIME (JIT)
It is an inventory management method In which goods are
received from suppliers only as they are needed. The main
objective of this method is to reduce inventory holding costs
and increase inventory turnover.
The Inventory of computer mouse must be considered of
motherboards, buttons, wheels, components like resistors,
capacitors, etc.
The inventory of mouse bodyconsists of various ergonomic
shapes for differentpurpose like gaming, business,
designer, comfort, etc.
