MACHINE DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS
NAGPUR

TYPE OF DESIGN
Design - Design is to formulate a plan to satisfy a particular need or to create
something with a physical reality for the satisfaction of human needs.
The objective od design is to create machine or structure economically to satisfy
the requirement of customers.
Types of design-
1. Adaptive design
2. Development design
3. New design
Adaptive Design
It is a form of design where an existing design engineering solution is adapted to
satisfy a different need or is used for a novel application.
In most cases the work of design engineer is associated with adaption of the
existing design. The designer only makes minor modifications in the existing
design of the product.
Development design
This type of design need considerable scientific training and design ability in order
to modify the design by adapting a new material or different method of
manufacture. E.g A new model of car
New Design
This is also called innovative design. When designer develops something that
didn’t exist before, then the design is called new design. Only a few numbers of
design fall into this category. This type of design requires lot of research work and
maximum creativity.
E.g Design of Pratt & Whitney F-119 engine with new capabilities of Supercruise
without afterburners.
