Business Continuity/Disaster Recovery
• The ability to technically recover from a situation where assets critical to business operations are inaccessible,
• Continue/restart core business operations using the recovery environment, and perform both operations within a period of time to reduce business loss.
• Many current BCDR solutions use traditional storage replication and recovery solutions (including Backup and Archive above) that are simply repointed to cloud
targets vs. alternative locations.
• BCDR is implemented in two main ways: Cold (e.g. Backup & Recovery, Pilot Light) or Warm (e.g. Warm Standby or Multi-Site)

Architecture #1: Cold Disaster Recovery
Backup & Recovery, Pilot Light
• Systems are in either a standby or powered off state
• Data is replicated as needed to meet the required RPO
• Virtual systems are replicated and updated periodically
• Physical systems are manually rebuilt as EC2 instances and powered on only for updates.

Architecture #2: Warm Disaster Recovery
Warm Standby, Multi-Site
• Systems running, but without applications started
• Data is replicated as needed to meet required RPOs
• Virtual systems are replicated to reflect changes,
• Physical systems are manually rebuilt and configured as EC2 instances, which are
in a running state, without applications started.

AWS DR Scenario: Malibu Boats Recovers from IT Disaster in Minutes
Customer: Malibu Boats is a large, US-based manufacturer of high-performance sports boats
Challenges:
• Needed enterprise-level DR solution to achieve rapid recovery and maintain availability of back-
end applications
• Meet budget requirements
• Attain multi-regional resilience (secondary data center was nearby)
• Adopt cloud-based DR solution that would work with future cloud-based server migration
project
Solution: Worked with Rackspace to select cutting-edge, AWS-integrated DR solution. Went with
CloudEndure.
Benefits: CloudEndure DR During Outage of Server Running Mission-Critical Applications
• Granular point-in-time recovery feature allowed recovery into AWS at previous point, prior to
corruption
• Resumed production facility operation, without disruption, with sub-second RPO and RTO of
minutes
• Automated failback to data center once issues were resolved, without data loss or disruption
• Application performance while running in recovery mode on AWS was better than expected,
and expedited migration to AWS, followed by activating cross region Disaster Recovery in AWS

All rights reserved AWS DR Scenario: Malibu Boats Recovers from IT Disaster in Minutes Customer: Malibu Boats is a large, US-based manufacturer of high-performance sports boats Challenges: • Needed enterprise-level DR solution to achieve rapid recovery and maintain availability of back- end applications • Meet budget requirements • Attain multi-regional resilience (secondary data center was nearby) • Adopt cloud-based DR solution that would work with future cloud-based server migration project Solution: Worked with Rackspace to select cutting-edge, AWS-integrated DR solution. Went with CloudEndure.
