In what ways does your media product
use, develop or challenge forms and
conventions of real media products?
Evaluation - Question 1
This shows an illustrative structure of the relationship between the lyrics and the visuals. The lyrics at this point say “She’s on a journey to find her inner peace…”. This shot shows
that her journey to find inner peace, in fact took a different path and she has gone off the rails partying and getting drunk. The shot shows the protagonist passed out the morning
after in bed. I used a high angle shot to make the protagonist look inferior due to her choice of lifestyle. The shots following this shot show the protagonist getting out of bed and
beginning her day with a bottle of wine again emphasising her journey to find her inner peace has gone in a different direction.
This shot shows the way in which the record company would want their artist to be represented. She is shown to be performing and close ups of her are shown
a lot throughout the video as well as of the male singer in the band. There is a use of moody lighting to make sure she still fits the band’s genre. She is also
dressed in a black vest with a shirt off the shoulder to show a voyeuristic view of her, to appeal to a male target audience as well as a female one. The male
singer is also shown with close ups and is dressed in black to match his female band mate but also to fit the indie genre. He has his hair done which makes
him appeal to a female target audience.
This mid shot represents the music genre of Indie with the use of mise – en – scene and the male singer. The mise – en - scene is simple showing a plain
studio with black walls and a microphone however, it represents the indie genre well by creating a moody, sullen, against the rules tone/atmosphere. The
plain black outfit he is dressed in has the same effect as the black studio. The shot shows a simplistic yet effective mise – en –scene which represents the
indie genre perfectly, it fits the type of performance videos shown by indie bands such as The 1975.
This shot is an intertextual reference to Tove Lo’s ‘Habits (Stay High)’. This was the video that inspired my music video as it showed a similar journey to
the one I wanted to show in my music video. I used an intertextual reference from this music video, and this shot in particular because I felt that it
showed the start of the journey which my protagonist was following and represents ‘the morning after the night before’ to show a reckless lifestyle which
I wanted to present through my female protagonist.

Evaluation - Question 1

  • 1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
  • 3. This shows an illustrative structure of the relationship between the lyrics and the visuals. The lyrics at this point say “She’s on a journey to find her inner peace…”. This shot shows that her journey to find inner peace, in fact took a different path and she has gone off the rails partying and getting drunk. The shot shows the protagonist passed out the morning after in bed. I used a high angle shot to make the protagonist look inferior due to her choice of lifestyle. The shots following this shot show the protagonist getting out of bed and beginning her day with a bottle of wine again emphasising her journey to find her inner peace has gone in a different direction.
  • 4. This shot shows the way in which the record company would want their artist to be represented. She is shown to be performing and close ups of her are shown a lot throughout the video as well as of the male singer in the band. There is a use of moody lighting to make sure she still fits the band’s genre. She is also dressed in a black vest with a shirt off the shoulder to show a voyeuristic view of her, to appeal to a male target audience as well as a female one. The male singer is also shown with close ups and is dressed in black to match his female band mate but also to fit the indie genre. He has his hair done which makes him appeal to a female target audience.
  • 5. This mid shot represents the music genre of Indie with the use of mise – en – scene and the male singer. The mise – en - scene is simple showing a plain studio with black walls and a microphone however, it represents the indie genre well by creating a moody, sullen, against the rules tone/atmosphere. The plain black outfit he is dressed in has the same effect as the black studio. The shot shows a simplistic yet effective mise – en –scene which represents the indie genre perfectly, it fits the type of performance videos shown by indie bands such as The 1975.
  • 6. This shot is an intertextual reference to Tove Lo’s ‘Habits (Stay High)’. This was the video that inspired my music video as it showed a similar journey to the one I wanted to show in my music video. I used an intertextual reference from this music video, and this shot in particular because I felt that it showed the start of the journey which my protagonist was following and represents ‘the morning after the night before’ to show a reckless lifestyle which I wanted to present through my female protagonist.
  • 7. This birds eye view shot demonstrates my use of camera by the way it is shot from quite high up to make it look as though the world is looking down on her due to her lifestyle choice. I used the same shot as a cutaway and reversed the shot to create a trippy, drunk effect as if we are seeing the world through her eyes. The shot was also outdoors and on wood which suggests an aspect of danger, as well as the high angle shot giving a dangerous tone to the shot as if she is high on a ledge or as a metaphor for her being on the edged.
  • 8. This shot shows use of lighting. I shot this in a club to create a partying/night out kind of atmosphere. The use of the coloured flashing lights helped to manipulate the shot, and the way I put a cutaway of the same shot on top gave the elusion of double vision, as if from her perspective. The lights helped to emphasise the effects of alcohol/drug abuse which I wanted to portray within my music video. This use of lighting also helped present the indie genre as it shows a life of parties and going against the rules/social norms.
  • 9. This shot represents the mise – en – scene of my music video, in terms of the performance aspect of the video. The studio setting with black walls work well within the indie genre to create a moody/sullen atmosphere. I decided to add coloured lights to the shots of the female singer because I wanted to create a separation between the male and female singer because the narrative of the video shows them to have had a break up. I also added the lights to the shots with the female singer because I felt it was an intertextual reference to the idea of her in the clubs. She is dressed in a black top with an off the shoulder to fit the indie genre image. I also had a microphone in the shot to show that this was a performance.
  • 10. This shot was also influenced by Tove Lo’s video for Habits (Stay High) by the use of a fish eye lens. I saw this in the Habits (Stay High) video and felt it would fit perfectly within my concept. The fish eye lens makes the shot look out of focus around the outside and causes a circle like effect of the shot this make the shot seem disorientated and creates a drunk like vision effect. This helped to emphasise my concept and again make it seem as though she’s in her own world of disorientation.
  • 11. The male singer performance shots were inspired by The 1975 videos. The simplicity of their videos showing purely performance with a basic mise-en-scene inspired my performance videos because I felt that it made my video fit the Indie genre well, as well as separating the narrative and performance aspects of the video. The 1975’s video for The Sound shows this simplicity of performance but also involves some narrative within the performance, but I wanted to keep the narrative and performance separate.
  • 13. This shot from The 1975’s video ‘Chocolate’ shows how the band uses genre in their music video. The video is black and white which is common for an indie music video. It creates the moody/mysterious image which indie bands try to portray. This shot also from The 1975’s ‘Chocolate’ shows a close up of the lead singer Matt Healy. This follows Goodwin’s theory of music videos showing the record label’s demand for close ups of the artist. This is because a music video is there to sell the band/artist so by using close ups this makes the focus of the music video on the band/artist. This shot from The 1975’s video for ‘Robbers’ which is a narrative based video shows an intertextual reference to the Quentin Tarantino film ‘True Romance’ as the lead singer of The 1975, Matt Healy and the female protagonist in the video are based on the characters of Bonnie and Clyde. Because this video is a narrative based video it has a clear illustrative structure as the lyrics match the visuals. For example at the transition into this shot the lyrics say “If you never shoot you never know” and the shot shows Matt Healy pointing the gun.
  • 14. These shot from Tove Lo’s video for ‘Habits (Stay High) show exactly what I wanted to portray in my music video. There is a good use of camera by the use of a fish eye lens effect to make the shot look disorientated and to emphasise the concept of “Stay High”. Most of the shot shown in the video including these three shots are mid shots because although this shows a lack of shots it makes the video look from her point of view as if the camera is just following her around as she does her daily life. This also relates to Goodwin’s theory and the need for focused shots on the artist because all then shots in the video are centred around her. The music video shows an illustrative narrative according Goodwin’s theory because the whole video is focused around the song lyrics “Stay high all the time”, as well as there being an illustrative narrative between the music and the visuals. The mise-en-scene shown in these shots and throughout the whole video makes the video relatable to the target audience, of young adults/late teens. The idea of the party lifestyle and settings in the video such as bars and clubs and waking up in a random bed or on a random sofa appeals directly to college and university aged people as this is the lifestyle they are used to and enjoy. The way she is dressed in simple clothing such as a vest top and the chipped nail varnish suggests she has not made a massive effort with her appearance and gives the audience the idea she probably hasn’t been home for a while. The shot on the right shows her washing her face in a public bathroom again suggesting the idea she hasn’t been home for a while, emphasising this party lifestyle and the concept of the song/music video “stay high all the time”.
  • 15. This shot of Alex turner in The Arctic Monkey’s video for their song ‘Arabella’ represents all the codes and conventions of a music video. The use of camera has a focus on the artist as Goodwin says. The lighting creates direct light on Alex turner making everywhere around him slightly darker, and again making him the focus of the shot. The use of mise-en-scene creates an intertextual references to 1940s gangster films by the use of clothing and setting which is a gig like atmosphere. The video is illustrative in terms of the relationship between the music and the visuals as there is a freeze frame at each change of music during the chorus. However, in terms of the relationship between the lyrics and the visuals, it would be amplification as it shows the kind of exciting lifestyle Arabella lives however, it is quite performance based and the lyrics are about something different to what the visuals show.
  • 16. These shots taken from the music video ‘Stay’ by Rihanna and Mikky Ekko influenced shots in my music video so I created similar shots of my own in my music video. The song ‘Stay’ has a very melancholy, wistful tone and this is reflected through the shots of Rihanna in the bath. I wanted to recreate my own version of these shots to reflect the sad lifestyle which the female protagonist in my music video is living after her break up. Despite the sadness shown in these shots Rihanna has been sexualised by being shown to be naked, this follows Goodwin’s theory of the voyeuristic treatment of women which creates a male target audience despite it being a stereotypically feminine song.
  • 19. I used a bold, white font on a black background so that the name of then album was shown bold and clear and is therefore made noticeable. The 1975 album is called “The 1975” so is positioned directly in the middle of the album cover however, because my band name and album name are different it would not have worked to have positioned the writing in the middle of the album cover. Similar to the album name I have made the writing bold and stand out so that like the album name there is a focus on it. Again because The 1975 have the same album and band name it is written bigger than I chose to write mine because I didn’t want to lose focus on the main image of the album cover. I chose my main image on my front cover to be of my band and they are wearing the same outfits as in the ‘Whole Body’ music video to keep brand identity between the products. Like The 1975’s simple image of an amp to show their focus on the music rather than the fame, I showed my band to have a microphone, showing that the narrative of the music video will not effect their music, as this is the first time they are seen together, because they are both separate in the video. Overall, my front cover shows a very similar design to The 1975 because they both have simplistic features but are effective and noticeable. They also both follow a black and white theme however, I added additional effects and avoided using a black and white filter on my band because I didn’t want to lose brand identity from the music video. The 1975’s debut video of ‘Chocolate’ is all in black and white so this did not effect their brand identity.
  • 20. The song list like the album name and band name on the front cover has the same font on both my back cover as well as The 1975’s. This again shows brand identity because the front matches the back. The main images are the back covers of both digipaks again follow the same structure as the front covers. On my digipak I have a similar picture as the band is wearing the same clothes and it has the same back drop of a plain black wall. The 1975 however used the exact same picture but put the track list inside the amp instead of the band/album name because they took a very simple approach however, I wanted to make mine a bit more exciting to appeal to a bigger target market. I added in the essential parts of a digipak about copyright and the record label. As well as the barcode needed for retail.
  • 21. Both CDs follow a very similar structure like the rest of the digipak. The name of the album and band is shown clearly on the cd so that even when the digipak is opened the album name and band name is still noticed, as it is essential to the band’s success and recognition. The 1975 went for a less bold title on their CD, this may be because they are already an established band so they do not need to make their band name as bold as I have with my CD. Both CDs also follow the black and white colour scheme which is typical of the indie genre.
  • 22. The inside panel of my digipak is a just a simple image, I wanted to keep it simple on the inside because on the outside it is bold and stands out to make the band appealing and recognisable. The image I chose is in reference to the music video, they are close as a band but there is a separation due to their past which is why there is a small gap between them. They are wearing the same clothes to keep brand identity and the back drop is the same. The inside insert of he 1975’s digipak has all the information on, which I included on the back of my digipak. Because The 1975 have got a very simple design on the rest of their digipak they have had to put everything including social media platforms on the inside.
  • 23. The album name is written bold so it is noticeable, on both mine and Kings of Leon’s magazine advert is positioned at the bottom and in the middle so it is the main focus of the advert. The band name is also written in bold so it is noticeable. On my digipak the band name is positioned in the middle at the bottom and Kings of Leon is at the top so they are the focus of the advert as well as the album name. Promotional techniques are used on both mine and Kings of Leon’s magazine advert by making target audiences aware that the album m is available to them now. Social media platforms are important in modern society to get bands noticed so I included them on my digipak and Kings of Leon included that as well. This is a typical convention of a magazine advert.
