ALLAH DAD KHAN Former Director General Agriculture ExtensionKhyberPakhtunkhwa Province HQ at Peshawar Pakistan Agriculture Pakistan'sprincipal natural resourcesare arable landandwater.About25% of Pakistan'stotal landarea isundercultivationandiswateredbyone of the largestirrigationsystemsinthe world.Pakistan irrigatesthree timesmore acres thanRussia.Agriculture accountsforabout23% of GDP and employs about44% of the laborforce. Rural WomeninPakistan Major Role in Agriculture. The womenare the backbone of agricultural workforce butworldwideherhard workhas mostlybeen unpaid.She doesthe mosttediousandback‐breakingtasks inagriculture,animal husbandryand homes. As farmers,womeninsubsistenceproductionensure the survival of millionsof peopleinall World. Womeninsustenance economies,producingandreproducing wealthinpartnershipwithnature,are expertsintheirownrightwithecological knowledgeof nature’sprocesses.Women’slivelihood strategies,andtheirsupportandmeansof foodsecurityare diverse andcomplex,fromcleaningseed, to cultivatingfieldcrops,tolivestockrearing,tohome gardening,gathering,and forests,woodlands, wastelandsetc.Butthese alternative modesof knowledge andlivelihoodsare notrecognizedby conventional agricultural scientistsand developmentexperts,whofail tosee the connectionof women’s knowledge, workandskillswithensuringcommunityfoodsecurity,andthe creationof wealth. Rural Womenas Agriculture Farmer Rural womenhave beenintensivelyinvolvedinagriculture anditsallied fields.She performsnumerous laborintensive jobssuchasweeding,hoeing,grass cutting,picking,cottonstick collections,separation of seedsfromfiber.Women are alsoexpectedtocollectwoodfromfields.Thiswoodisbeingusedasa majorfuel source forcooking.Because of the increasingpopulationpressure,over grazingand desertification,womenface difficultiesinsearchingof fire wood. Cleandrinkingwaterisanothermajor probleminrural Pakistan.Like collectionof wood,fetchingwaterfromremote areasisalsothe dutyof women. Farmactivities,keepingof livestockanditsotherassociatedactivitieslikemilking,milk processing,andpreparationof ghee are alsocarriedoutby the women.Livestock isthe primary subsistentactivityusedtomeethouseholdfoodneedsas well assupplementfarmincomes.The majorityof farmsown some livestock.The patternof livestockstrengthismainlyinfluencedbyvarious factors suchas farm size,croppingpattern,availabilityof range‐landsincludingfodderandpasture.It is commonpractice in the rural areasof Pakistantogive an animal aspart of a women’sdowry.The numberof small ruminants(sheepandgoat) is3 perfarm. Rural womenhave veryhecticlife.Herworkstartsfrom dawnand endsat dusk.The dailyroutine work beginsfromhouse cleaning,fetchingdrinkingwater,dish washing,laundry,preparingfoodforfamily, care of children,tailoringandsewing clothes.She managesthese activitiesverysmartly.

Howto involve rural WomeninAgriculture development Forthe bettermentof womenfolkandin recognitionof hercontributionin agricultureanditsalliedfield,followingrecommendationshave been made. 1. Womenworkinginthe rural economyandthe informal sectorare to be formallyrecognizedandher laborwork maybe accountedinmonetaryterms. 2. Stepsare to be takento ensure the accessof poorrural womento land,agricultural andlivestock extensionservicesandsupportmechanismsand facilities. Furthermore,providingwomeneasyaccessto micro‐credit,especially throughthe PakistanPovertyAlleviationFund(PPAF),Rural Support Programmes (RSPs),FirstWomenBank(FWB),Agricultural DevelopmentBank(ADB) andthe Khushali Bank. 3. To enhance women'sliteracyrates,andtoimprove the levelsof female educationratio,otherurgent measuresrequired.A separate educationpolicyfor womenmayserve the purpose. Womenand educationare complementaryforeachothers;hence,appropriate measurementsmustbe takento buildaneducatedrural woman. 4. Womenare entirelyabsentfromthe state structuresanddecision‐making bodiesthathave the potential tointroduce structural changes.Women’slackof involvementingovernmentstructuresis critical to bringaboutsubstantive changesinthe developmentpoliciesandprogramsthatwouldleadto a shiftin genderrelationsinthe society. 5. Law and access to justice isanothertargetarea. Effective implementationandthe enforcementof existingrights,removingdiscriminationthroughlegalreforms,andprovidinglegal aid,assistance and counseling. 6. Make visible women’srole,contributionandknowledge andskillsinfoodand agriculture• Protectingwomen’shealthandreproductive rightsfromhazardous technologiesandcorporate agriculture 7. Facilitate the strengtheningof women’sknowledge,skills,capacityandactionin these issues 8. Self helpgroups/Womenvillageorganization,were made andtookup income generatingsteps 9. Rural Womenmustbe facilitatedthattheymaybe able establish Agriculture, Livestock , enterprises. 10 Role of Womencontributionregardinganimal productionandhusbandrymustbe acknowledgedand measurementmustbe takentosubstantiate.Rural Womenmustbe paidtheirshare inlivestockincome.

Creatingandenablingenvironmentthathelpsrural poorwomen’sand communities’accessto improve knowledge,skillsandtechnologiesespeciallyin goat,sheep,poultryand livestockproduction systemsinparticular. 14. Shortand intermediatetermloansmustbe providedtowomeninvolvedin Livestock.
