5 Ways to Successfully Convert to an All-Paleo Diet

  1. 1. HomeHome You probably heard of it, Paleo is also known as “caveman diet” , “primal diet” or “stone age diet”. But Paleo is more than just another weight-loss diet –it is a lifestyle. It is a mindset of keeping ourselves healthy by mimicking the way our ancestors select food. It’s a throwback to times long before processed and other unhealthy food was introduced. But deciding what to eat in the modern times is not that easy. As you follow a Paleo cooking program, the first few weeks of transition from the SAD (StandardAmerican Diet) to a modern Paleo diet can be a challenge. Here are ways in order to get through this phase. 1. Prepare for the “Low-Carb Flu” One of the most common side-effect of shifting to Paleo is the low-card flu. It is not actually a disease –but it was named because you will feel sick just as the same. Your body is so used to burning carbohydrates like sugar and starch, your body will definitely undergo a carb widrawal. Your body was accustomed the easy-burning and quicker energy-boost, thus you experience a sluggish and cranky feeling during the first weeks. Solution: Keep going. Like any types of widrawal, low-carb flu will not last long. You will need to tough it out and stay focused as your body gets used to fat as a new fuel source. After a few weeks, the flu disappear. 2. Do not restrict eating… Replace it Paleo is not all about not eating, it is the contrary. As you decrease your carbohydrate intake, you shall also need to replace it with the same calories elsewhere. It is a complete no-no to get hungry or else, your body will have adverse effects of malnutrition. That is why eating an appropriate amount animal protein is okay, because your body requires extra energy coming from fat. Not all Paleo diets are the same so it will be best to take time to make a list of your eating habits. Solution: Make a list of foods that should be excluded for your initial 30-day Paleo program. Then make a list of replacements that are accepted as Paleo. You will be surprised that you have still have lots of options! 3. Detox-like Experience Removing toxins out of your body is a great thing, but it honestly does not feel great. Many people complain about the discomfort, lethargy and feeling sick as their bodies excrete all those toxins from artificial flavorings, preservatives and colorings got from unhealthy lifestyle. This is usually experienced by people who had dropped a significant amount of weight in a Paleo program, since the fat tissue is where most toxins were stored. These toxins shall be released into the blood stream and disposed of as you continue to lose weight. Solution: While the uncomfortable feeling gets you in the notion of “being punished”, keep in mind that your body has stored a lot of toxins over a lifetime. Removing all of it is not an easy task. But as your body learns the new and healthy lifestyle, you will soon get over the detox symptoms, feel better and more energized. To ease the process, make sure to keep yourself properly hydrated and strengthen your liver with natural supplements. 4. Overcome Cravings As you will need to avoid your childhood favorites: hamburgers, skittles, pancakes and soda, one more challenge to overcome is the craving pang. It is challenging to feel tempted when you simply cannot have those. Solution: One thing to learn about food cravings is that these are behavioral. We compensate ourselves quickly with “comfort food” every time we feel tired, frustrated or depressed. The love for coffee is one concrete example of a habit formed that became a craving. We learned to associate coffee to stay awake and alert at work. But you were not born to drink coffee, and obviously our primal ancestors did not either. With this in mind, you will soon develop a strong will to overcome a craving and change your habits. It will also be noteworthy to learn that a constant craving must be the body’s sign of a nutritional deficiency. Take chocolate as an example: it is rich in magnesium so it may be a sign that your body is actually scarce of magnesium more than the chocolate. You can try to replace it with other magnesium-rich foods such as nuts or squash for a healthier change. 5. Learning how to cook Unlike any other diet options, Paleo can never be done without learning how to cook. Personal chefs cost more than what we eat and there are limited options for a Paleo meal to take-out. Unless you have lots of money to have other people cook for you, going all the way Paleo simply means you have to cook it on your own. Solution: First is to check if your kitchen has the right tools. You will just need the basics, don’t worry. Never ever be tempted to by those revolutionary kitchen supplies you see on TV shopping. All you need are the following: 1 cast-iron frying pan 1 pot 1 wooden spoon 1 chef’s knife 1 smaller knife 1 cutting board 1-2 large Pyrex containers (for storing food); get the glass ones so they can do double duty as oven pans. If you are really into the challenge, then consider to invest in a slow cooker. This is the simplest way to cook meat: Add the meat, seasonings and water, then turn to low. After a few hours, come back to add the vegetables and serve it for dinner. To manage your kitchen time efficiently, try to build a routine: prepare double portions, half for lunch and other for dinner. You can also cook a large batch over the weekend then freeze them on individual containers for the whole week. Over time you will enjoy cooking your own food (which is healthier and safer), without toiling the whole day in the kitchen. What if I fail? There are times you are tempted to eat something that isn’t Paleo or just simply got confused over the labels. But there is no need to beat yourself up. Paleo does not need to be perfect. A mistake does not mean failure, you only fail once you stop trying. You will need to have Paleo cookbooks ready so you can plan out your diet program easier.
