March 22th Is World water day since 1993 with
new goals to achieve each year.
World water day goals for 2014
Many objectives have been set for the year 2014, a big one being to raise
awareness of the inter-linkages between water and energy. Both are
very closely interlinked and interdependent.
Water helps different energy sources to
Hydroelectric, nuclear and thermal energy sources
require the use of water resources to help them
generate. Equally, pumping, treating and
transporting water to numerous consumers
requires about 8% of the global energy generation.
Access to clean drinking water is a
fundamental right, but it is not a fact in many
parts of the world. Contaminated water
causes 1.5 million deaths a year, 2.5 billion
people live without basic sanitation and one
in six people does not have access to clean
Polluted water isn’t just dirty—it’s deadly.
Some 1.8 million people die every year
of diarrheal diseases like cholera. Tens of
millions of others are seriously sickened by a
host of water-related ailments—many of
which are easily preventable.
