  24. 24. English Homework(TASK 2: RESEARCH ABOUT PASSIVE VOCIE)Nathaly Revelo11-07-2012. PASSIVE VOCIEUse of PassivePassive voice is used when the focus is on the action. It is not important or not known, however, who or what is performing the action.Form of PassiveSubject + finite form of to be + Past Participle (3rd column of irregular verbs)When rewriting active sentences in passive voice, note the following: the object of the active sentence becomes the subject of the passive sentence the finite form of the verb is changed (to be + past participle) the subject of the active sentence becomes the object of the passive sentence (or is dropped)
  25. 25. Personal Passive simply means that the object of the active sentence becomes the subject ofthe passive sentence. So every verb that needs an object (transitive verb) can form a personalpassive.Impersonal Passive is not as common in English as in some other languages (e.g. German,Latin). In English, Impersonal Passive is only possible with verbs of perception (e. g. say, think, know). STRUCTURE Verb Tense Structure ExamplePRESENT SIMPLE am/are/is + pp Spanishisspokenhere.PRESENT am/are/is being + pp Your questions are being answered.CONTINUOUSFUTURE (WILL) will be + pp It’ll be painted by next week.FUTURE (GOING am/are/is going to be Terry is going to be made redundant next year.TO) + ppPAST SIMPLE was/were + pp We were invited to the party, but we didn’t go. Other helping verbs are also sometimes present: "The measure
  26. 26. could have been killed in committee." The passive can be used, also, in various tenses. Letstake a look at the passive forms of "design." The engine must not be turned off any reason whatsoever. No more than three vessels may group and sail together. It is forbidden to fees the whales or to dump waste into the sea.
