  1. 1. THE FEASIBILITY OF MELTED EXTRUDED POLYSTYRENE FOAM THROUGH OCTANE AS SEALANT A Science Investigatory Project

ABSTRACT <ul><li>The study entitled “The feasibility of melted Extruded Polystyrene Foam through Gasoline (Octane) to serve as sealant” was conducted to see whether the melted Styrofoam (Extruded Polystyrene Foam) is capable to be a sealant alternative. </li></ul><ul><li>They gathered pieces of Styrofoam (Extruded Polystyrene Foam) then they put it on a container with Gasoline (Octane). Afterwards, they applied it on a piece of metal with hole and started the experiment. </li></ul><ul><li>The study showed that the melted Styrofoam (Extruded Polystyrene Foam) is reliable as a sealant alternative. The sample was able to seal of the hole and prevents liquid from entering. A few days later it became as hard as plastic. </li></ul>

Background of the Study <ul><li>Styrofoam (also known as thermocol) is a trademark of The Dow Chemical Company for closed-cell extruded polystyrene foam currently made for thermal insulation and craft applications. In 1941, researchers in Dow's Chemical Physics Lab found a way to make foamed polystyrene. Led by Ray McIntire, they &quot;rediscovered&quot; a method first discovered by Swedish inventor Carl Georg Munters. Dow acquired exclusive rights to use Munters' patents and found ways to make large quantities of extruded polystyrene as a closed cell foam that resists moisture. </li></ul>
  5. 5. Statement of the Problem <ul><li>This study is conducted to find out the feasibility of melted Extruded Polystyrene Foam as sealant. Specifically, it is sought to answer the following questions: </li></ul><ul><li>Can melted Extruded Polystyrene foam be used as sealant? </li></ul><ul><li>Will it be effective like the commercialized sealants in the market? </li></ul>
  6. 6. Significance of the Study <ul><li>The significance of the study is to lessen the pollution by means of recycling Styrofoam in which in our world today is widely used. With this study the researchers can know how versatile the Styrofoam is and how they can save mother earth from slowly dying. Also the researchers can minimize their budget and save money. </li></ul>
  7. 7. Scope and Limitation <ul><li>The study only focuses in determining whether the melted Extruded Polystyrene Foam can act as a reliable sealant. </li></ul>
  8. 8. METHODOLOGY <ul><li>Materials </li></ul><ul><ul><li>1x Piece Styrofoam </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>1x L. Gasoline </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>3x Sheets metal </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>1x 5 mm. nail </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>1x Drinking Glass </li></ul></ul>

METHODOLOGY <ul><li>Procedure </li></ul><ul><li>Measurement of Materials Needed </li></ul><ul><li>Two (2) teaspoons Approximately 29.57ml of gasoline were measured and then was poured on the drinking glass. </li></ul><ul><li>Preparation of Set-up </li></ul><ul><li>Two (2) set-ups were prepared; set-up one (1) was made up of a metal sheet with a hole as big as a 5 mm. nail; set-up (2) was made up of a metal sheet with three (3) holes from a 5 mm. nail joined together to create a bigger hole. </li></ul>
  10. 10. METHODOLOGY <ul><li>Application of the Melted Polystyrene </li></ul><ul><li>In applying the melted polystyrene, the researchers put the melted polystyrene on Spoon and applied it on the hole. After applying the melted polystyrene, they set it aside. </li></ul>

CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS <ul><li>Conclusions </li></ul><ul><li>Based from the data gathered, the researchers conclude that the melted Expanded Polystyrene is an effective sealant if left undisturbed for eight days, it was also concluded that a plastic-like material can be made using melted polystyrene and an automobile gasoline. </li></ul><ul><li>Recommendations </li></ul><ul><li>Based from the drawn conclusions, the researchers recommend the following: </li></ul><ul><li>Conduct more reliable test using less gasoline. </li></ul><ul><li>Conduct more tests using fire to test if it’s a fire-proof material. </li></ul>
