Asking great questions using
GROW
The GROW model was developed by former racing driver Sir John Whitmore. It
is the world’s best-known & most widely used Coaching model.
Goal
What exactly do you want to achieve?
How will you know when you reach your goal?
What will it give you if you achieve this goal?
How could you break this goal down into manageable sub goals?
By when do you want to achieve it?
How can you measure your success?
To what extent is it within your control?
To what extent is this goal positive, desirable, challenging for you?
Reality
What are the root causes of the problem?
What have you done so far in reaching this goal?
What has got in the way of you reaching this goal?
What have you learnt from that?
Who else do you need to help you reach this goal?
Who else will be affected if you reach this goal?
Who have you seen successfully achieve this goal?
What external constraints are there to you achieving your goal?
What internal constraints are there to you achieving your goal? (E.g. motivation,
thinking, etc.)
How might you overcome those constraints?
What is really stopping you?
Options
What can you do to remove or reduce the root cause of the problems?
What could you do as the next step in reaching this goal?
What else could you do (repeated)?
If time were not a factor what could you do?
Likewise, if resources, money, people, history, politics were not a factor what could
you do?
What would happen if you did nothing?
Whom do you admire who does this well?
What could you do that they do?
Will
What exactly will you do next?
Which option appeals most?
How does this help you in achieving the goal?
Who else needs to know about this?
How will you inform them?
What obstacles do you expect to meet?
How will you overcome them?
What other priorities do you have that will take your energy and motivation away
from achieving your goal?
What will you do tomorrow toward achieving this goal?
Rate your level of commitment from 1 - 10 etc.?
