Letter from the
Editors
Hi (for the last time),
What a year!
As we exhale from the rollercoaster ride
that was our first year as Westpac graduates, we
have the opportunity to look back on the highs
and lows of 2014. Whether it be moving between
rotations (which can be extremely humbling when
you move into completely new teams and tasks),
meeting our senior leaders that support the Group,
or having a Friday drink, I think we can all say that
our fellow graduates, who in one way or another,
have been essential to experiences across the last
year. When you needed to ask someone for help,
someone to go to the gym with, or even when you
need a coffee (or a bacon and egg roll if you had a
big one the night before), it’s nice to know that we
have all been gifted an incredible support system of
peers to call on.
This issue will be our final issue for the
2014 GradWrap team and decided that for the
last issue what is more poignant than an issue
dedicated to the graduates and new friends that we
have made. The issue showcases the 2014 graduates
and our 2013 peers who have just completed their
two-year programs. Their profiles give a quick
snapshot into their personalities and show you
how truly diverse and excellent this cohort really
is. We are also fortunate enough to have our senior
leaders from each program impart their final advice
and well wishes as we peruse through photos and
reminisce on the year that past.
We would like to take this opportunity to
thank the 2014 GradWrap team whom we have
absolutely loved working with this past year. We
know the high level of commitment GradWrap
takes and we truly appreciate the team’s dedication
and support throughout the year. From imagining
themes to scrambling to deadlines each month, we
hope you have enjoyed working with us as much as
we did with you.
We would also like to pay special mention
to the senior leaders of Westpac Group that,
despite their busy schedules, took the time to be
interviewed and give us the amazing opportunity
to learn more about these seemingly enigmatic
figures throughout the year. We would also like to
thank the HR Graduate team who have helped us
to deliver these issues to you.
As we soon begin passing the reigns onto
the 2015 graduates,we hope that the new team will
carry GradWrap on to bigger and brighter things
and wish them all the best.
We hope you enjoy the 2014 Graduate
Yearbook and our final issue of GradWrap from
the 2014 team.

Farewell class of
2014!
As time draws to an end where you will no
longer hold the title of being a Westpac Graduate,
we would like to thank you for your commitment
and enthusiasm over the past year. As a graduate
manager it is extremely rewarding to see our
graduates flourish within our company and build
a foundation for their future career. You have lived
up to our expectations and have undoubtedly
come a long way from the anxious students at
our assessment centres. The past year has been an
opportunity to learn, grow and make some fantastic
memories and friends. The networks you have made
will be invaluable to the growth of your career and
the knowledge and skills gained across the past
year will become valuable assets to you. A personal
highlight of the year for us was the graduate closing
ceremony… in particular the graduate videos (who
knew BT graduates could rap!), it was a great
opportunity to reflect on the past year and have
our class of 2014 together as graduates for one last
party…sorry we mean training session!
The next chapter for you at Westpac is no
doubt highly anticipated, and the most important
advice that we can give you is to be open to change
and embrace it! Also remember, learning doesn’t
stop when you graduate, always look to challenge
and perfect your thinking and take control of your
own learning. Finally... there will be testing times
in your career and how you handle these challenges
and learn from them will allow you to succeed. For
now we wish you the best of luck and look forward
to catching up with you soon.

The
GRADWRAP
committee
It seems like almost a lifetime ago when we first took the
reins from the 2013 GradWrap Team back in May and released
our first issue in June – “Then and Now”. With a dedicated team
of two editors, one photographer, one designer and six writers, this
past year has been quite an adventure for us as we embarked on a
journey treading unfamiliar waters together to release our first issue
and, almost aligned to the theme of our first issue, we can reflect on
the learnings and we had “Then”to what we are “Now”that we have
all wrapped up.
Having a clear vision and goal of aligning our articles to a
relevant theme for the month,we have strived to create a publication
that was coherent and timely to the concerns and interests of the
graduate cohort as well as interests and trends taking place in the
world we live in. Through this clarity of purpose we created seven
issues, each filled with different themes and articles released to
the greater Westpac Group as well as future Graduates joining
the Westpac Group. This eighth issue marks the last for the 2014
GradWrap team and showcases the heart of what we wanted to
achieve with GradWrap during our time in office – the voice of the
graduates of the Westpac Group.
This Yearbook will showcase and shed light on all of the
graduates who have worked in the Westpac Group during 2014.
Some are veterans on two year programs which commenced in
Lexie Leung recaps on the highlights of co-editing
this year’s GradWrap magazine
10 | The 2014 Grad Yearbook 11
2013,whilst many others are fresh-faced recruits embarking on the
first steps of their career straight out of university. As you browse
through the profiles and discover the diversity of individuals who
you have come to know as your Westpac Group graduates, you
might recognise a familiar face or name without knowing that
they were part of a select intake. Accompanied with a diversity
of individuals is a diversity of program streams across the Group
including a handful of graduates in Singapore within Westpac
Institutional Banking.
The support from senior leaders across the Westpac
Group has been humbling during our time with GradWrap as
they accepted our requests for interviews, scheduling time in
their busy calendars to meet with our team and impart insights
and advice from their careers. We had the chance to meet with a
range of senior leaders including our present CEO,Brian Hartzer,
Brad Cooper the CEO of BT Financial Group, Chief Operating
Officer, John Arthur, and the departing Chief Risk Officer, Greg
Targett. You will find a short message from some of our Group
Executives prefacing each section of this Yearbook, reflecting
the commitment that the program has from a senior level in the
Group.
Along with senior leaders, we have had a diverse number
of interviewees who took time out of their calendars to meet with
our team for an interview to either pass on words of advice or
inspire. The young achievers who have featured through our issues
certainly inspired us to achieve higher aspirations and to do more
with our lives. After being in the Group for a year,it is clear that as
a brand we always strive to achieve more for our customers and the
values of Courage and Achievement is reflected in the individuals
within the organisation.
Whether you read in detail or glanced through GradWrap
this year, we thank you for your readership – it is you who we have
created this for. Enjoy this final issue of GradWrap and take some
time to look for the graduates who have worked beside you during
this past year at the Westpac Group. To the Graduates - enjoy this
Yearbook and take the time to learn about another side to your
fellow grads!

The Year in Magazine Issues
12 | The 2014 Grad Yearbook 13
#1 June
Ex-Graduate Panel with Kevin Brennan, Callan Sainsbury,
Cassandra O’Brien and Ed Hughes
We kicked off with a panel of former graduates who discussed
their time on the grad program and the years since their roll-off.
The key takeaway was that Westpac is an excellent organisation
for career development with a diverse range of opportunities. All
of our panellists had different experiences to share with most of
them having roles in a variety of areas across the organisation
before coming to their current one.
#2 July
Rob Whitfield, Group Executive of Westpac Institutional Bank
Rob was entertaining, down to earth and friendly, sharing with us
some candid stories about his career to date. One which sticks out
in our minds is the drastic pay cut he took when moving into a
new role which ended up being one of the greatest career decisions
he ever made. Rob advised us that if we see an opportunity to
add real value we should take the risk, back ourselves and work
hard. He used an example from his career of when he worked to
turn Treasury from a part of the organisation seen as simply a cost
centre into a business that made huge profits for the bank.
The
GRADUATE
MEETINGS
committee
As the Graduate Meetings Committee of 2014 we
had the pleasure of organising events throughout the
year for the 2014 Graduates to hear from a range of
insightful speakers. We gained valuable career advice
and heard first-hand about the triumphs and hurdles of
our company’s leaders.
Penny Johnson
“This one time before a GMC Event, I
went shopping to find Brian Hartzer a
‘quirky’ gift as a thank you for his time.
I’m so glad we didn’t give him those
hotdog headphones I thought were
glorious…”
Claire Vieritz
“This one time at GMC, I booked
and finalised a meeting with Deputy
CEO, Phil Coffey only to find that
I hadn’t taken into account daylight
savings time and had to re-do the
whole thing.”
Mel Jamieson
“This one time when we organised
the post event drinks I spent way
too much time trying to work out a
formula for how many beers, wines
and champagnes to order per person.
In the end we had an open bar
where we got charged per bottle so
it didn’t matter anyway!”
Shadé Zahrai
“This one time when I MC’d for
John Arthur, COO, I forgot what
his title was when I was introducing
him. It was awkward.”
Jim Malavazos
“This one time, I asked Rob
Whitfield a question during one
of our events, he subsequently
provided me career advice including
the benefits of starting my career in
Adelaide.”

#3 August
John Arthur, Chief Operating Officer
John spoke passionately about the Service Revolution and our
2017+ strategy. He also gave us some fantastic advice on working
relationships and how trust is at the core of this. We gained some
great insight and knowledge as he shared his learnings throughout
his career.
#4 September
Brian Hartzer, Chief Executive of Australian Financial Services
(Currently CEO of Westpac Group)
At the time we didn’t know we would be hearing from Westpac’s
present CEO, however we must’ve had an inkling that this would
be special because we arranged for drinks and canapés after the
talk.Brian gave us some great advice as graduates to work hard and
over deliver at this point in our careers to build a good reputation
for ourselves. He also spoke about being “pulled up the corporate
ladder” rather than “climbing” it and shared some stories about
his early career life and going with his gut on a lot of decisions
he made.
#5 October
Rachel Slade, General Manager of Global Transactional Services
Rachel began by speaking about her education, describing herself
as a “failed engineer” who switched degrees for Economics and
Business Law. Moving on to her career, she encouraged us to
find sponsors in different areas of the business and stressed the
importance of networking and personal brand.Rachel also advised
that when looking for a job it’s important to work for a team/
manager that you like but you should find a role that challenges
you and makes you a little nervous. She said that when recruiting
90% of her decision is based on attitude/team fit and rest on job
skills.
#6 November
Phil Coffey, Deputy CEO
Our final speaker for 2014 was fantastic and had the audience
engaged from the get go with his candid and entertaining stories.
Phil spoke about the difference between being a manager and a
leader and how he came to learn this. He encouraged us to build
friendships at work and stressed the importance of supporting
each other and working as a team to achieve great things.Phil also
spoke about how diversity is key within any organisation, not just
with gender and ethnicity, but also diversity of thought.
Overall, the committee had
a fantastic year! We had
a lot of fun organising the
events, overcame many
teleconference issues and
learnt how to stretch a
minimal budget across a
year’s worth of events.
We are proud to say that the
2014 Graduate Cohort had
the opportunity to learn from
a calibre of such inspiring
speakers and can now begin
our careers with some
fantastic advice and support
behind us.

The
GRADUATE
COMMUNITY
INITIATIVES
committee
I would like to thank this year’s fantastic GCI team
for always going above and beyond to support our
community partners and projects. I would also like to
thank GradWrap for helping promote the Community
Leaders Awards, as well as our volunteers for the two
Many Rivers pop-up stalls. Due to everyone’s help and
commitment, we’ve had a great 2014 and as we start
planning for the 2015 handover, we can only hope that
the next batch of GCI graduates get the same level of
exposure, engagement and excitement that our team has
had this year.
Here’s hoping that 2015 is just as amazing!

The Community Leaders Awards
Project Managers: Sahana Shetty, Bhagya Peiris & Kathy Chan
Sahana and Bhagya coordinated the marketing, judging, sourcing and administration of the Awards
and processed over 180 category nominations for leaders of Social Sector organisations. Kathy provided
support for the project.
‘The red carpet was rolled out for the 2014 Westpac Community Leaders Awards
gala event at the Australian Museum, Sydney. It was a night to celebrate the
inspirational work of finalists, who continue to make a significant contribution to
the social fabric of our country. The night started amongst lions and fossils with
drinks and canapés in the ‘skeleton room’ to the vocal talents of a young singer
from our Private Banking division, Alicia Macdonald. With Melissa Doyle (Channel 7
presenter) as MC for the main event and Jason Yetton (Group Executive, Westpac
RBB) and Barry Thatcher (National Head of Education, Commercial Banking) as
our ‘barrel girls’, 20 finalists were celebrated and 8 of those were announced as
the award recipients. Guest were able to hear the amazing stories and aspirations
of our award recipients during a Q&A session, all whilst sitting under the skeleton
of a 57 foot (17.4m) sperm whale! The night finished with plenty of celebrations,
thought provoking conversations and no doubt everyone leaving with a sense of
amazement as to how much these finalists and award recipients had accomplished
so far.’
– Sahana Shetty
Indigenous Banking & Many Rivers
Project Managers: Jamie Luk, Ken Jiang, Jordan Lipson, Edwina Wong, Lenny Kary & Kathy Chan
Jamie developed and executed a reporting framework for the Indigenous Bank which has been
invaluable to the business. Meanwhile, Ken, Jordan, Ed, Lenny, Kathy and Preeta have been involved
in supporting Many Rivers, an Australian microfinance organisation. Many Rivers provides small loans
to individuals who are excluded from the financial system for various reasons (ranging from poor credit
history to being located in a remote area.) These loans assist in helping develop small businesses, which
provide a sustainable source of income for these individuals and their families.
‘GCI provided support for two pop-up stalls held this year where the products of
over 40 microfinance clients were sold. The team also participated in a building-
wide initiative to promote the event. In the years to come, when I think back to the
Graduate Program I will remember the great times I had volunteering at the Many
Rivers pop-up store with Dean and his team. It was a great experience to let our
fellow employees know about the great things Many Rivers does as an organisation,
as well as support the products made by the clients.’
– Edwina Wong
Social Sector Banking
Project Managers: Dan Florrimell & Megan Quinn
Megan and Dan took on the creation of the Guides for Community Organisations series. These are
produced for thousands of Westpac Social Sector customers to help support their financial education
in an accessible and relevant form. Key to this was liaising with community leaders and subject matter
experts to create interesting case studies and informative content. Between the two of them, they talked
to 12 thriving community organisations and maintained ongoing working relationships with three
experts – social impact consulting specialists Net Balance, prominent law firm Gilbert + Tobin and
Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand.
‘It was a fantastic experience to talk with so many fantastic community
organisations operating around Australia. The amount of work they put in for other
people is mind-blowing! This project was really worthwhile, because the best parts
of the guides allow these groups to learn from each other, which will hopefully give
them the information to do an even more amazing job.’

BT
GRADUATES Congratulations on completing your graduate
program with BT Financial Group and thank
you for your contribution to our business. While
this program is undoubtedly a tremendous
opportunity for you, the fresh new approaches
you bring to our business are just what we need
to ensure that we are keeping in touch with a
new generation of customers.
Now that you are ready to pursue the next steps
in your career, I’d like to offer a few words of
advice from my own experience.
Don’t be afraid of humble beginnings. Whatever
your next role, relish every opportunity that
comes your way. My first role was in customer
service, which has given me a terrific affinity for
people in those jobs now. That job made me very
grounded and that’s the sort of people that I look
for now.
Be passionate about what you do. Whatever role
you take, make sure you are inspired by the vision
and values of the company. Opportunities will
come up and to position yourself to have those
opportunities means you’ve got to be enjoying
what you’re doing because people like to be
around people who are happy and positive. And
you’ve got to be good at doing it, and you’ve got
to be seen to be somebody who’s got potential.
Then opportunities come your way and you can
make choices.
Your views are valuable. Don’t just implement
what you are told, challenge with respect.
If you are ready for your next job, then act like
you are in that job. You need to be doing a great
job in your current role, but also think about your
discretionary effort; project yourself into your
next role
The future is in your hands. What an exciting
world you are entering into. All the very best for
a successful and fulfilling career.

FINANCE
GRADUATES I would like to congratulate our Finance graduates who have completed the graduate
program this year. The graduate program is a wonderful way to learn about the many
different areas across Westpac Group. We feel honoured to attract such a high calibre of
graduates every year. We enjoy working with the graduates in our Finance teams and
look forward to working with you, as you continue your journey with Westpac.
I really enjoyed spending time with both the 2013 and 2014 graduates earlier in the year.
I could feel the passion and enthusiasm in our team. Reflecting on my career, my advice
for graduates would be; always ask why and never be scared to ask questions; take the
opportunity to move around, as this will help you gain wider experience and knowledge
of our teams and the Bank; be interested in strategy and it’s never too early to think about
leading a team.
Keep up your passion and do what you love to do. I wish you all the best for the future.

I have been in and around financial services for 31 years (scary thought) so my time as a graduate
was quite a while ago! But I still remember the sense of excitement about all the possibilities that
lay ahead. Reflecting back (and we all know hindsight is 20/20) there are some themes I thought I
would share.
• Set goals but be prepared to change them or modify your path to them – life is not predictable.
• Every cloud has a silver lining. Life is full of challenges. Accept that you will make mistakes and
missteps and often they will be uncomfortable but that will help build the strength and resilience
that all leaders must have.
• Choose to be positive – are you a glass half empty or full person?
• Build your networks, find role models or attributes and sounding boards – both men and women
- who share your values, whom you can relate to and connect with. Seek out mentors from
within and outside of the industry. Be prepared for real and honest feedback that you may not
have thought of before – and act on it. Opportunities often come from unexpected places.
• Be generous with your time.Take time out to help others.
• Take time out to reflect and be self-aware. Do a stocktake now and again of your skills and
preferences, development needs and blind spots.
My last piece of advice is to go for it and grab opportunities – in your own way and time of course –
but back yourself, have a sense of curiosity and be a lifelong learner. A sense of humour often helps
too!
I love a good quote and this one is for you (courtesy of Confucius) – “Choose a job you love and you
will never have to work a day in your life”. I wish you all the very best with your future choices as you
embark on your career journey.

WIBWestpac Institutional Bank As Graduate employees of the Westpac
Group, I hope each of you have relished
the opportunity to gain valuable
experience with Australia’s first bank, and
first company.
Having been in your footsteps, all the way
back in 1986 when I joined as a graduate,
I know firsthand how far the opportunity
you have had this year, can take you.
The pace of change since I joined has
simply been phenomenal. There have
been financial, economic, political and
regulatory challenges, and dramatic shifts
in economies around the world including
China emerging as an important trading
partner in each of the countries we operate.
Responding to this, we have just officially
opened our sub-branch in the Shanghai
Free Trade Zone, allowing us to provide
deeper support for our customers and
leverage the opportunities expected to
come with China’s economic and financial
markets reform.
As the world changes, so does our business
and our footprint. We’re now proudly
helping customers achieve their financial
goals in Australia, New Zealand, Pacific,
United States, United Kingdom and key
Asian centres. And this has meant we
were in the fantastic position to welcome
graduates in Asia for the first time this
year!
One piece of inspiring advice I would like
to leave with you is about opportunity.
When The Hon. Megan Latham spoke
to Westpac employees earlier this year as
part of our International Women’s Day she
shared:
“The reason you never say no to an
opportunity is because that chance may
not come again, you don’t know if you will
like it or not like it, you don’t know if you
are going to develop your potential, but
believe me, you will find out. And if you
don’t like it, then change. But certainly,
don’t ever say no to an opportunity to step
up to the mark.”
Congratulations for your efforts and
contribution this year. Whether you are

My best memory of the program was the first day of the Group induction at the start of
the year. It was quite an exciting moment with all the 2014 graduates together in one room,
especially when we were enlightened by a motivating speech from Gail Kelly

the park near my house always manages to calm me down
If I were an animal I would be a cheetah for its speed and hunting prowess

Epilogue
Gail Kelly
Thank you for a great 2014.
It’s been a wonderful year for the Westpac Group and the results we achieved would not have been possible
without the hard work, passion and dedication of every single team member. Your contribution is highly
valued and we look to you to bring all of your energy and ideas to really make a difference for our customers.
I’d like to leave you with a couple of thoughts that have really helped me through my career which I hope
will be of assistance to you as you progress through your own career.
First and foremost, be positive – always look at things with an attitude of ‘glass half full’; even when things
go wrong which they invariably will – look for what you can learn and how to do things better next time.
Secondly, always combine your optimism with courage and boldness. Never be afraid to have a go! Make
sure you back yourself and have the confidence to make a difference in everything you endeavour.
I wish you all of the very best for the year ahead and your career. I look forward to celebrating with you
when Westpac turns 200 in 2017!
With my warmest regards,
Gail

  • 3. 2 | The 2014 Grad Yearbook 3 Letter from the Editors Hi (for the last time), What a year! As we exhale from the rollercoaster ride that was our first year as Westpac graduates, we have the opportunity to look back on the highs and lows of 2014. Whether it be moving between rotations (which can be extremely humbling when you move into completely new teams and tasks), meeting our senior leaders that support the Group, or having a Friday drink, I think we can all say that our fellow graduates, who in one way or another, have been essential to experiences across the last year. When you needed to ask someone for help, someone to go to the gym with, or even when you need a coffee (or a bacon and egg roll if you had a big one the night before), it’s nice to know that we have all been gifted an incredible support system of peers to call on. This issue will be our final issue for the 2014 GradWrap team and decided that for the last issue what is more poignant than an issue dedicated to the graduates and new friends that we have made. The issue showcases the 2014 graduates and our 2013 peers who have just completed their two-year programs. Their profiles give a quick snapshot into their personalities and show you how truly diverse and excellent this cohort really is. We are also fortunate enough to have our senior leaders from each program impart their final advice and well wishes as we peruse through photos and reminisce on the year that past. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the 2014 GradWrap team whom we have absolutely loved working with this past year. We know the high level of commitment GradWrap takes and we truly appreciate the team’s dedication and support throughout the year. From imagining themes to scrambling to deadlines each month, we hope you have enjoyed working with us as much as we did with you. We would also like to pay special mention to the senior leaders of Westpac Group that, despite their busy schedules, took the time to be interviewed and give us the amazing opportunity to learn more about these seemingly enigmatic figures throughout the year. We would also like to thank the HR Graduate team who have helped us to deliver these issues to you. As we soon begin passing the reigns onto the 2015 graduates,we hope that the new team will carry GradWrap on to bigger and brighter things and wish them all the best. We hope you enjoy the 2014 Graduate Yearbook and our final issue of GradWrap from the 2014 team. – Alexandra Leung & Sarah-Jane Riley
  • 4. 4 | The 2014 Grad Yearbook 5 Farewell class of 2014! As time draws to an end where you will no longer hold the title of being a Westpac Graduate, we would like to thank you for your commitment and enthusiasm over the past year. As a graduate manager it is extremely rewarding to see our graduates flourish within our company and build a foundation for their future career. You have lived up to our expectations and have undoubtedly come a long way from the anxious students at our assessment centres. The past year has been an opportunity to learn, grow and make some fantastic memories and friends. The networks you have made will be invaluable to the growth of your career and the knowledge and skills gained across the past year will become valuable assets to you. A personal highlight of the year for us was the graduate closing ceremony… in particular the graduate videos (who knew BT graduates could rap!), it was a great opportunity to reflect on the past year and have our class of 2014 together as graduates for one last party…sorry we mean training session! The next chapter for you at Westpac is no doubt highly anticipated, and the most important advice that we can give you is to be open to change and embrace it! Also remember, learning doesn’t stop when you graduate, always look to challenge and perfect your thinking and take control of your own learning. Finally... there will be testing times in your career and how you handle these challenges and learn from them will allow you to succeed. For now we wish you the best of luck and look forward to catching up with you soon. – Anna, Stephanie and Dara A note from the Graduate HR Team
  • 5. 6 | The 2014 Grad Yearbook 7 Graduate Committees
  • 6. 8 | The 2014 Grad Yearbook 9 Clockwise from left: Sarah-Jane Riley, Chris Miletich, Lexie Leung, Beth Egan, Alan Yeung, Meyvian Ong, Nicole Murray, Ann Tran. The GRADWRAP committee It seems like almost a lifetime ago when we first took the reins from the 2013 GradWrap Team back in May and released our first issue in June – “Then and Now”. With a dedicated team of two editors, one photographer, one designer and six writers, this past year has been quite an adventure for us as we embarked on a journey treading unfamiliar waters together to release our first issue and, almost aligned to the theme of our first issue, we can reflect on the learnings and we had “Then”to what we are “Now”that we have all wrapped up. Having a clear vision and goal of aligning our articles to a relevant theme for the month,we have strived to create a publication that was coherent and timely to the concerns and interests of the graduate cohort as well as interests and trends taking place in the world we live in. Through this clarity of purpose we created seven issues, each filled with different themes and articles released to the greater Westpac Group as well as future Graduates joining the Westpac Group. This eighth issue marks the last for the 2014 GradWrap team and showcases the heart of what we wanted to achieve with GradWrap during our time in office – the voice of the graduates of the Westpac Group. This Yearbook will showcase and shed light on all of the graduates who have worked in the Westpac Group during 2014. Some are veterans on two year programs which commenced in Lexie Leung recaps on the highlights of co-editing this year’s GradWrap magazine
  • 7. 10 | The 2014 Grad Yearbook 11 2013,whilst many others are fresh-faced recruits embarking on the first steps of their career straight out of university. As you browse through the profiles and discover the diversity of individuals who you have come to know as your Westpac Group graduates, you might recognise a familiar face or name without knowing that they were part of a select intake. Accompanied with a diversity of individuals is a diversity of program streams across the Group including a handful of graduates in Singapore within Westpac Institutional Banking. The support from senior leaders across the Westpac Group has been humbling during our time with GradWrap as they accepted our requests for interviews, scheduling time in their busy calendars to meet with our team and impart insights and advice from their careers. We had the chance to meet with a range of senior leaders including our present CEO,Brian Hartzer, Brad Cooper the CEO of BT Financial Group, Chief Operating Officer, John Arthur, and the departing Chief Risk Officer, Greg Targett. You will find a short message from some of our Group Executives prefacing each section of this Yearbook, reflecting the commitment that the program has from a senior level in the Group. Along with senior leaders, we have had a diverse number of interviewees who took time out of their calendars to meet with our team for an interview to either pass on words of advice or inspire. The young achievers who have featured through our issues certainly inspired us to achieve higher aspirations and to do more with our lives. After being in the Group for a year,it is clear that as a brand we always strive to achieve more for our customers and the values of Courage and Achievement is reflected in the individuals within the organisation. Whether you read in detail or glanced through GradWrap this year, we thank you for your readership – it is you who we have created this for. Enjoy this final issue of GradWrap and take some time to look for the graduates who have worked beside you during this past year at the Westpac Group. To the Graduates - enjoy this Yearbook and take the time to learn about another side to your fellow grads! • 8. 12 | The 2014 Grad Yearbook 13 #1 June Ex-Graduate Panel with Kevin Brennan, Callan Sainsbury, Cassandra O’Brien and Ed Hughes We kicked off with a panel of former graduates who discussed their time on the grad program and the years since their roll-off. The key takeaway was that Westpac is an excellent organisation for career development with a diverse range of opportunities. All of our panellists had different experiences to share with most of them having roles in a variety of areas across the organisation before coming to their current one. #2 July Rob Whitfield, Group Executive of Westpac Institutional Bank Rob was entertaining, down to earth and friendly, sharing with us some candid stories about his career to date. One which sticks out in our minds is the drastic pay cut he took when moving into a new role which ended up being one of the greatest career decisions he ever made. Rob advised us that if we see an opportunity to add real value we should take the risk, back ourselves and work hard. He used an example from his career of when he worked to turn Treasury from a part of the organisation seen as simply a cost centre into a business that made huge profits for the bank. The GRADUATE MEETINGS committee As the Graduate Meetings Committee of 2014 we had the pleasure of organising events throughout the year for the 2014 Graduates to hear from a range of insightful speakers. We gained valuable career advice and heard first-hand about the triumphs and hurdles of our company’s leaders. Penny Johnson “This one time before a GMC Event, I went shopping to find Brian Hartzer a ‘quirky’ gift as a thank you for his time. I’m so glad we didn’t give him those hotdog headphones I thought were glorious…” Claire Vieritz “This one time at GMC, I booked and finalised a meeting with Deputy CEO, Phil Coffey only to find that I hadn’t taken into account daylight savings time and had to re-do the whole thing.” Mel Jamieson “This one time when we organised the post event drinks I spent way too much time trying to work out a formula for how many beers, wines and champagnes to order per person. In the end we had an open bar where we got charged per bottle so it didn’t matter anyway!” Shadé Zahrai “This one time when I MC’d for John Arthur, COO, I forgot what his title was when I was introducing him. • 9. 14 | The 2014 Grad Yearbook 15 #3 August John Arthur, Chief Operating Officer John spoke passionately about the Service Revolution and our 2017+ strategy. He also gave us some fantastic advice on working relationships and how trust is at the core of this. We gained some great insight and knowledge as he shared his learnings throughout his career. #4 September Brian Hartzer, Chief Executive of Australian Financial Services (Currently CEO of Westpac Group) At the time we didn’t know we would be hearing from Westpac’s present CEO, however we must’ve had an inkling that this would be special because we arranged for drinks and canapés after the talk.Brian gave us some great advice as graduates to work hard and over deliver at this point in our careers to build a good reputation for ourselves. He also spoke about being “pulled up the corporate ladder” rather than “climbing” it and shared some stories about his early career life and going with his gut on a lot of decisions he made. #5 October Rachel Slade, General Manager of Global Transactional Services Rachel began by speaking about her education, describing herself as a “failed engineer” who switched degrees for Economics and Business Law. Moving on to her career, she encouraged us to find sponsors in different areas of the business and stressed the importance of networking and personal brand.Rachel also advised that when looking for a job it’s important to work for a team/ manager that you like but you should find a role that challenges you and makes you a little nervous. She said that when recruiting 90% of her decision is based on attitude/team fit and rest on job skills. #6 November Phil Coffey, Deputy CEO Our final speaker for 2014 was fantastic and had the audience engaged from the get go with his candid and entertaining stories. Phil spoke about the difference between being a manager and a leader and how he came to learn this. He encouraged us to build friendships at work and stressed the importance of supporting each other and working as a team to achieve great things.Phil also spoke about how diversity is key within any organisation, not just with gender and ethnicity, but also diversity of thought. Overall, the committee had a fantastic year! We had a lot of fun organising the events, overcame many teleconference issues and learnt how to stretch a minimal budget across a year’s worth of events. We are proud to say that the 2014 Graduate Cohort had the opportunity to learn from a calibre of such inspiring speakers and can now begin our careers with some fantastic advice and support behind us. • 10. 16 The GRADUATE COMMUNITY INITIATIVES committee I would like to thank this year’s fantastic GCI team for always going above and beyond to support our community partners and projects. I would also like to thank GradWrap for helping promote the Community Leaders Awards, as well as our volunteers for the two Many Rivers pop-up stalls. Due to everyone’s help and commitment, we’ve had a great 2014 and as we start planning for the 2015 handover, we can only hope that the next batch of GCI graduates get the same level of exposure, engagement and excitement that our team has had this year. Here’s hoping that 2015 is just as amazing! – Preeta Seshachari (GCI Project Manager) A message from the GCI Project Manager
  • 11. 18 | The 2014 Grad Yearbook 19 The Community Leaders Awards Project Managers: Sahana Shetty, Bhagya Peiris & Kathy Chan Sahana and Bhagya coordinated the marketing, judging, sourcing and administration of the Awards and processed over 180 category nominations for leaders of Social Sector organisations. Kathy provided support for the project. ‘The red carpet was rolled out for the 2014 Westpac Community Leaders Awards gala event at the Australian Museum, Sydney. It was a night to celebrate the inspirational work of finalists, who continue to make a significant contribution to the social fabric of our country. The night started amongst lions and fossils with drinks and canapés in the ‘skeleton room’ to the vocal talents of a young singer from our Private Banking division, Alicia Macdonald. With Melissa Doyle (Channel 7 presenter) as MC for the main event and Jason Yetton (Group Executive, Westpac RBB) and Barry Thatcher (National Head of Education, Commercial Banking) as our ‘barrel girls’, 20 finalists were celebrated and 8 of those were announced as the award recipients. Guest were able to hear the amazing stories and aspirations of our award recipients during a Q&A session, all whilst sitting under the skeleton of a 57 foot (17.4m) sperm whale! The night finished with plenty of celebrations, thought provoking conversations and no doubt everyone leaving with a sense of amazement as to how much these finalists and award recipients had accomplished so far.’ – Sahana Shetty Indigenous Banking & Many Rivers Project Managers: Jamie Luk, Ken Jiang, Jordan Lipson, Edwina Wong, Lenny Kary & Kathy Chan Jamie developed and executed a reporting framework for the Indigenous Bank which has been invaluable to the business. Meanwhile, Ken, Jordan, Ed, Lenny, Kathy and Preeta have been involved in supporting Many Rivers, an Australian microfinance organisation. Many Rivers provides small loans to individuals who are excluded from the financial system for various reasons (ranging from poor credit history to being located in a remote area.) These loans assist in helping develop small businesses, which provide a sustainable source of income for these individuals and their families. ‘GCI provided support for two pop-up stalls held this year where the products of over 40 microfinance clients were sold. The team also participated in a building- wide initiative to promote the event. In the years to come, when I think back to the Graduate Program I will remember the great times I had volunteering at the Many Rivers pop-up store with Dean and his team. It was a great experience to let our fellow employees know about the great things Many Rivers does as an organisation, as well as support the products made by the clients.’ – Edwina Wong Social Sector Banking Project Managers: Dan Florrimell & Megan Quinn Megan and Dan took on the creation of the Guides for Community Organisations series. These are produced for thousands of Westpac Social Sector customers to help support their financial education in an accessible and relevant form. Key to this was liaising with community leaders and subject matter experts to create interesting case studies and informative content. Between the two of them, they talked to 12 thriving community organisations and maintained ongoing working relationships with three experts – social impact consulting specialists Net Balance, prominent law firm Gilbert + Tobin and Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand. ‘It was a fantastic experience to talk with so many fantastic community organisations operating around Australia. The amount of work they put in for other people is mind-blowing! This project was really worthwhile, because the best parts of the guides allow these groups to learn from each other, which will hopefully give them the information to do an even more amazing job.’ – Dan Florrimell GCI Projects

  • 18. 32 BT GRADUATES Congratulations on completing your graduate program with BT Financial Group and thank you for your contribution to our business. While this program is undoubtedly a tremendous opportunity for you, the fresh new approaches you bring to our business are just what we need to ensure that we are keeping in touch with a new generation of customers. Now that you are ready to pursue the next steps in your career, I’d like to offer a few words of advice from my own experience. Don’t be afraid of humble beginnings. Whatever your next role, relish every opportunity that comes your way. My first role was in customer service, which has given me a terrific affinity for people in those jobs now. That job made me very grounded and that’s the sort of people that I look for now. Be passionate about what you do. Whatever role you take, make sure you are inspired by the vision and values of the company. Opportunities will come up and to position yourself to have those opportunities means you’ve got to be enjoying what you’re doing because people like to be around people who are happy and positive. And you’ve got to be good at doing it, and you’ve got to be seen to be somebody who’s got potential. Then opportunities come your way and you can make choices. Your views are valuable. Don’t just implement what you are told, challenge with respect. If you are ready for your next job, then act like you are in that job. You need to be doing a great job in your current role, but also think about your discretionary effort; project yourself into your next role The future is in your hands. What an exciting world you are entering into. All the very best for a successful and fulfilling career. • 21. 38 FINANCE GRADUATES I would like to congratulate our Finance graduates who have completed the graduate program this year. The graduate program is a wonderful way to learn about the many different areas across Westpac Group. We feel honoured to attract such a high calibre of graduates every year. We enjoy working with the graduates in our Finance teams and look forward to working with you, as you continue your journey with Westpac. I really enjoyed spending time with both the 2013 and 2014 graduates earlier in the year. I could feel the passion and enthusiasm in our team. Reflecting on my career, my advice for graduates would be; always ask why and never be scared to ask questions; take the opportunity to move around, as this will help you gain wider experience and knowledge of our teams and the Bank; be interested in strategy and it’s never too early to think about leading a team. Keep up your passion and do what you love to do. I wish you all the best for the future. Peter A message from Peter King Chief Financial Officer, Westpac Group 39

  • 30. 56 Enterprise Risk & HR Graduates Congratulations on finishing the Westpac Group Graduate program, and thank you all for your contribution. I’m delighted that many of you will be continuing your career with us and I look forward to supporting you and watching you flourish as you move forward with the Group. Whatever your next step may be, I encourage you to make the most of the many experiences and resources available to you and hope you continue to grow and prosper in your future career. Wishing you every success, Christine A message from Christine ParkerGroup Executive, Human Resources & Corporate Affairs I have been in and around financial services for 31 years (scary thought) so my time as a graduate was quite a while ago! But I still remember the sense of excitement about all the possibilities that lay ahead. Reflecting back (and we all know hindsight is 20/20) there are some themes I thought I would share. • Set goals but be prepared to change them or modify your path to them – life is not predictable. • Every cloud has a silver lining. Life is full of challenges. Accept that you will make mistakes and missteps and often they will be uncomfortable but that will help build the strength and resilience that all leaders must have. • Choose to be positive – are you a glass half empty or full person? • Build your networks, find role models or attributes and sounding boards – both men and women - who share your values, whom you can relate to and connect with. Seek out mentors from within and outside of the industry. Be prepared for real and honest feedback that you may not have thought of before – and act on it. Opportunities often come from unexpected places. • Be generous with your time.Take time out to help others. • Take time out to reflect and be self-aware. Do a stocktake now and again of your skills and preferences, development needs and blind spots. My last piece of advice is to go for it and grab opportunities – in your own way and time of course – but back yourself, have a sense of curiosity and be a lifelong learner. A sense of humour often helps too! I love a good quote and this one is for you (courtesy of Confucius) – “Choose a job you love and you will never have to work a day in your life”. I wish you all the very best with your future choices as you embark on your career journey. A message from Alex HolcombChief Risk Officer, Westpac Group 57

  • 32. 60 WIBWestpac Institutional Bank As Graduate employees of the Westpac Group, I hope each of you have relished the opportunity to gain valuable experience with Australia’s first bank, and first company. Having been in your footsteps, all the way back in 1986 when I joined as a graduate, I know firsthand how far the opportunity you have had this year, can take you. The pace of change since I joined has simply been phenomenal. There have been financial, economic, political and regulatory challenges, and dramatic shifts in economies around the world including China emerging as an important trading partner in each of the countries we operate. Responding to this, we have just officially opened our sub-branch in the Shanghai Free Trade Zone, allowing us to provide deeper support for our customers and leverage the opportunities expected to come with China’s economic and financial markets reform. As the world changes, so does our business and our footprint. We’re now proudly helping customers achieve their financial goals in Australia, New Zealand, Pacific, United States, United Kingdom and key Asian centres. And this has meant we were in the fantastic position to welcome graduates in Asia for the first time this year! One piece of inspiring advice I would like to leave with you is about opportunity. When The Hon. Megan Latham spoke to Westpac employees earlier this year as part of our International Women’s Day she shared: “The reason you never say no to an opportunity is because that chance may not come again, you don’t know if you will like it or not like it, you don’t know if you are going to develop your potential, but believe me, you will find out. And if you don’t like it, then change. But certainly, don’t ever say no to an opportunity to step up to the mark.” Congratulations for your efforts and contribution this year. Whether you are continuing your career with the Westpac Group or another organisation, I wish each of you all the best in your future endeavours. Best wishes for the festive season and a prosperous 2015. Rob Whitfield A message from Rob Whitfield Chief Executive, Westpac Institutional Bank GRADUATES 61

  • 38. 72 Epilogue Gail Kelly Thank you for a great 2014. It’s been a wonderful year for the Westpac Group and the results we achieved would not have been possible without the hard work, passion and dedication of every single team member. Your contribution is highly valued and we look to you to bring all of your energy and ideas to really make a difference for our customers. I’d like to leave you with a couple of thoughts that have really helped me through my career which I hope will be of assistance to you as you progress through your own career. First and foremost, be positive – always look at things with an attitude of ‘glass half full’; even when things go wrong which they invariably will – look for what you can learn and how to do things better next time. Secondly, always combine your optimism with courage and boldness. Never be afraid to have a go! Make sure you back yourself and have the confidence to make a difference in everything you endeavour. I wish you all of the very best for the year ahead and your career. I look forward to celebrating with you when Westpac turns 200 in 2017! With my warmest regards, Gail Chief Executive Officer, Westpac Group 73
