  1. 1. THE ROTARY FOUNDATION OF ROTARY INTERNATIONAL A Presentation to the Evergreen Rotary Club By Curt Harris November 2, 2018
  2. 2. I’M CONFUSED, IS THERE MORE THAN ONE FOUNDATION?  The Evergreen Rotary Club (ERC) is a 501(c)4 non-profit organization  The Evergreen Rotary Foundation (ERF) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization  The Rotary Foundation (TRF) is also a 501(c)3 non-profit organization  501(c)3 organizations are also called “Public Charities” and donations are usually tax deductible
  3. 3. WHY TWO FOUNDATIONS?  The Evergreen Rotary Foundation is our club’s foundation  Donations to the ERF are tax-deductible (“a Public Charity”}  Some sponsors require organizations to be public charities  The Rotary Foundation is Rotary International’s foundation
  4. 4. THE ROTARY FOUNDATION OF ROTARY INTERNATIONAL The Rotary Foundation  Has been around for over 100 years  Has funded over $3 billion in projects  Each year, TRF funds $70 million in grants for 1,100 projects
  5. 5. HOW DOES IT WORK?  Donations to the “Annual Fund” come back to the District in three years in the form of District Designated Funds (DDF) or to the World Fund  DDF is used as matching funds:  For “DISTRICT GRANTS”, cash is matched 1:1, so $5,000 cash can become $10,000  For “GLOBAL GRANTS”, cash is matched 1:1 and with TRF also providing matches, $10,000 cash can become $35,000
  6. 6. AREN’T GRANTS ONLY INTERNATIONAL? Absolutely not! District Grants are often used for projects in our community! This year, a club can receive up to $3,000/year in DDF (matching funds) for local, community District Grants. Some of our club’s recent local District Grant Projects:  Homeless Shelter Supplies ($1,500)  Renovate Audubon Center ($1,750)  Evergreen Recycle Day ($4,000)  Mountain Reads ($4,000)  Veteran’s Park Sculpture ($4,000)
  7. 7. SO WHY GIVE TO THE ROTARY FOUNDATION?  TRF is a HIGHEST RATED CHARITY: Charity Navigator has received four stars and was recently assigned a PERFECT SCORE to TRF (only one of three in the world)  100% of contributions are returned to Rotary Clubs to support local and international projects  Our Evergreen Rotary Club is a high user of matching funds  TRF Grant criteria requires clubs to be good stewards of ERF and TRF funds (accountability, sustainability, etc.)
  8. 8. POLIO PLUS  Polio Plus program began in 1985  Eradication has been much more difficult than anyone imagined  We have immunized over 2.5 billion children in 122 countries  Gates Foundation is matching 2:1 all donations through TRF  Only two countries with wild polio cases in 2018  Only 22 cases so far in 2018 – “We Are This Close!”  Donations go toward Paul Harris Fellowships
  9. 9. I’M CONVINCED! HOW DO I GIVE?  EREY – Every Rotarian Every Year (at least $10/year)  SUSTAINING MEMBERS donate at least $100/year  PAUL HARRIS SOCIETY MEMBERS commit $1,000 every year  MAJOR DONORS have contributed at least $10,000 to TRF  PAUL HARRIS FELLOWSHIPS: For each $1,000 contributed to the TRF (Annual Fund and/or Polio Plus), the donor is awarded a Paul Harris Fellowship  Estate planning options
  10. 10. ROTARY DIRECT  You can always send donations directly to TRF  Or, you can set up automatic payments directly to TRF through “Rotary Direct”  They happen periodically  Charged against a checking account or credit card  Donations are automatically credited to you and your club  You can easily cancel at any time
  11. 11. INCENTIVES! If sign up for Rotary Direct by December 14th to be a sustaining member, the club will give you credit for $300 towards your first, or next, Paul Harris Fellowship Any one-time contribution (min $100) by December 14th will receive a 1:1 match (example: a $200 donation will result in an additional $200 towards a Paul Harris Fellowship)
