Overview Shop safety is of utmost importance
and concern for all technicians,
managers as well as shop owners. In
order to prevent injuries to yourself
and to fellow operators , safety rules
and regulations must be followed.
The rest of this lesson sets out some
basic safety guidelines that that will
prevent injury when adhered to.
Auto Shop
Layout
Most auto shops
have four primary
areas
Repair Area – includes stalls (small work areas), the alignment
rack, special areas to mount and balance tires, an area for
machining rotors and drums, an engine repair area, and an area
to clean parts. Many stalls include a vehicle hoist.
Locker Room – is an area that includes the lunchroom, lockers,
sinks and wash basin, and rest room.
Tool Room – is a secure area set aside to store special tools,
equipment, shop towels, and supplies.
Training or Meeting Room – this room is used for meetings,
seminars, demonstrations, and other technician training activities.

Always wear eye protection when working under
a vehicle
Eye protection should also be worn whenever
there is a chance of dust, dirt, or metal shavings
getting into your eyes.
Eye and face protection. wear whenever working
with or around the battery
Clothing should never be loose; it might get
caught in moving parts or machinery.

Always wear good foot protection
Long hair should be tied back or tucked
under hat.
No jewellery should be worn.
Do not play around in the shop.
Do not operate any equipment unless
you are trained to use it.
Machines must be shut off and
unplugged, before servicing.

Never carry any sharp tools or parts in your pockets.
Carry
Wear full face protection when grinding, welding and
performing other operations where sever hazards are
present.
Wear
Avoid working too fast, as you could overlook a repair
procedure or safety rule.

Keep guards or shields in the rotating parts.

Oily rags could combust spontaneously, always
put them in a designated close metal container.
Keep the shop organized.
Put all the tools away.
Never leave parts, tools, creepers, etc on the
floor.
Fuel spills – contain in a Container, wipe floor
with a rag; Rag in closed container.

A technician should always lift with the legs and not the back!
Use adequate lighting.
Ventilate when needed.
Turn on the ventilation fans any time fumes are present.
Use exhaust hose if a vehicle is running in the shop. Noxious
fumes can lead to nausea and or carbon monoxide poisoning.
Asbestos is often found in brake and clutch dust and is known
to cause cancer.

the shops until you have
been properly instructed
on their use.
After lifting a vehicle with
a jack, position jack
stands under the vehicle
before working on it.

Move vehicles very slowly (5-
10 kmph maximum) in and out
of the shop .
When moving a vehicle in and
out of the shop, do not get
close to it or in between it and
the wall or a heavy object.
Before driving a vehicle out of
the shop door honk the horn
and check carefully for people
or other vehicles.
