  3. 3.  Previous studies have shown that receiving antibiotics within 3 hours is important in decreasing the risk of infection However, more recent work has shown that administering antibiotics by 66 minutes is an even better guideline to avoid an infection. Current American College of Surgeons (ACS) Trauma Quality Improvement Program (TQIP) Best Practice Guidelines recommend receiving antibiotics within 60 minutes of arrival to the emergency department. BACKGROUND
  4. 4.  This study aimed to assess whether this CQI, through the use of a measured process metric, feedback reporting, and regular collaborative meetings, could improve the timeliness of antibiotic administration to patients with open long-bone fractures. JOURNAL PURPOSE
  5. 5.  A performance baseline for each trauma center and the overall CQI was established using data from 2017.  This project was designed and carried out based on the Standards for Quality Improvement Reporting Excellence (SQUIRE 2.0) framework. METHODE

  9. 9.  In conclusion, this study demonstrates that the time to receiving antibiotics for patients with an open lower-extremity fracture can be reduced by members of a statewide trauma CQI in a population health driven manner. Through a performance improvement initiative involving a process metric, participating centers achieved the goal of 85% patients in the CQI received antibiotics in less than 120 minutes after trauma center arrival.
