Unite - A Platform to Empower Civic Engagement

“There is no natural, spontaneous process to prevent destabilizing, inegalitarian forces from prevailing permanently.”
Thomas Piketty, Capital in the 21st Century

Our world is polluted, deeply unequal and increasingly xenophobic. We need to do something NOW to safeguard ourselves from our own worst selves.
Unfortunately, rise of social media has meant rise of instant outrage, violent identity politics and persistently ignorant filter bubbles.
We need to reimagine our social tools that can help us be of use to each other, to be better humans.
This idea is a first step in that direction. I am seeking partners, funders to bring this idea to life.
Any leads are welcome.

Unite - A Platform to Empower Civic Engagement

  2. 2. 2 AJINKYA PAWAR RISING PRECARITY All collars – blue, white, pink or any other – face unprecedented anxiety and uncertainty about their future prospects. A campground in Clarksville, Indiana, which hosts workers for an Amazon fulfillment center nearby. Photo by Cole Barash for wired.com Glorification of precarious work behaviors. The doublespeak hiding the reality of precariat ‘white collar’ workers.
  3. 3. 3 AJINKYA PAWAR NO ONE IS IMMUNE Technology to replace dependency on human labour in service of a few capitalist owners. Growth of capital at the cost of civilizational, ecological collapse.
  4. 4. 4 AJINKYA PAWAR THE INDIVIDUAL FLOTSAM In the three years following the financial crisis of 2008-09, growth in temp work tripled that of permanent work in Canada Fluid identities, nomadic untethered life and constant change; the individual is a flotsam, floating inconsequentially in the ocean of humanity.
  5. 5. 5 AJINKYA PAWAR THE FALSE COMMUNITY Facebook, Linkedin, networking events…. Most avenues of social interactions don’t help the new generation of mobile precariats to ORGANISE in a meaningful way. Social media is less about building community , more about spreading propaganda, projecting identity and building favorable life narrative. Third Sector research Centre Community Action and Social Media: A Review of the Literature The literature reviewed here is dominated by studies of and commentary on the political impact of social media use, in particular in forms of protest. For community organisations and groups in the UK, it is striking that, while these media may have helped to change some processes, there seems to have been little impact on the overall outcomes in terms of empowerment, equalities or social justice. Utopian anticipations, where such outcomes were seen as a consequence of inexpensive, ubiquitous, horizontal communication, are looking problematic: there is, as yet, little evidence of benefit from social media use for small agencies working at the local level.
  6. 6. 6 AJINKYA PAWAR URGENCY TO ORGANISE We need to come together NOW. Ecological urgency Humanitarian crisis Rising precarity among all classes. We need ways to improve together, to help each other. Humanitarian crisis – We can help each other, if there is a will. But there isn’t enough of it.
  7. 7. 7 AJINKYA PAWAR NEITHER LEFT NOR RIGHT We need new imagination for 21st century. 20th century ideas of capitalism, communism etc., have left us at the precipice of climate change, pillaged public goods and an all pervading sense of distrust. Rule in all organisations is based on the same power dynamic: that of between the ruler, essentials, influentials and inter- changeables. The difference between a democracy and a dictatorship is merely that of the composition – ratio of essentials to interchangeables. Hence focus must be on making everyone an essential in the power dynamic.
  8. 8. 8 AJINKYA PAWAR We need an easier way • To organize meaningfully • To trust each other and act together • To conduct binding referendums • To not be fooled by propaganda and smokescreen. • To remain focused on what is important and immediate STRONGER TOGETHER
  9. 9. 9 AJINKYA PAWAR IMAGINE Being in control of your life – Your water, your electricity, your public transport, Your neighborhood playground, your city’s water source, your employer’s work policies….. IMAGINE BEING IN CONTROL OF ALL SOCIAL CONSTRUCTS THAT AFFECT YOUR LIFE.
  10. 10. 11 AJINKYA PAWAR IMAGINE Not looking helplessly at the TV screen as you witness corruption, idiocy & apathy. Imagine being able to participate in State’s policy matters that affect you, as and when it is required. Imagine being informed and being constantly educated to be able to evaluate matters with critical thought.
  11. 11. 12 AJINKYA PAWAR IMAGINE A nation without politicians… a nation with direct democracy. A transparent company where nothing is hidden from the employees and employees can organize freely without fear. A community that does not depend on the apathy of distant governments. It directly governs and manages its common resources.
  12. 12. 13 AJINKYA PAWAR IMAGINE FLOTSAM NO MORE.

  21. 21. 22 AJINKYA PAWAR Hello. I am Ajinkya Pawar, a WPP Atticus award winning brand strategist by profession, currently heading planning for Ogilvy Sri Lanka. I am deeply concerned with the global dangers of climate change, rising xenophobia and rising inequality. I believe, my expertise in strategy can be put to better use in the fight against these three dangers. I believe, these problems can’t be solved without meaningful civic participation. Hence, I propose to build a secure platform for meaningful, action-oriented civic participation. I am passionate about the idea and would love your support in terms of capital, capabilities and scale. Please write to me at ajinkyapawar@gmail.com if you can help make this a reality. Thank you.
