Gold medals were won by Japan in gymnas-
tics, baseball, softball, table tennis, boxing,
karate and fencing. The country won a total
of nine gold medals in judo events, three in
skateboarding and two in swimming, and
picked up a further five medals in wrestling.

SKATEBOARDER
Japan won the first ever Olympic gold me-
dal in women’s street skateboarding at the
2020 Games, with thirteen-year-old Momiji
Nishiya taking the top spot on the podium.
The 2020 Games were the first to incorpo-
rate skateboarding, with the courses de-
signed to allow athletes to perform stunts
on benches and rails.
