2. What is DEF and how should I use it?
DEF is a high purity solution of
urea in demineralized water
(32.5%).
It is used to chemically reduce
nitrogen oxides (NOx)
emissions from vehicles
powered by diesel engines.
DEF is contained in a separate
tank and sprayed into the
exhaust gases. Never fill the
diesel fuel tank with DEF.
3. How much DEF will I need?
You will not need to
replenish DEF every time
you refill with diesel fuel.
The DEF consumption
will be approximately 2%
of your diesel fuel
consumption : for every
100 gallons of diesel
consumed you would
need 2 gallons DEF
4. Why will DEF make me save on fuel?
SCR with DEF converts NOx outside the engine into harmless
nitrogen and water, with the help of a catalytic converter and diesel
exhaust fluid.
Competing technology EGR combats NOx inside the engine by re-
circulating a portion of the exhaust back through the engine’s
cylinders. This requires the engine to work harder and consume
more fuel.
SCR process allows engines to operate at maximum efficiency,
increasing fuel economy, and lowering costs.
OEMs and fleets utilizing SCR have seen fuel efficiencies ranging
from four to eleven percent in trucks equipped with SCR technology.
5. Is DEF harmful?
It is non-toxic and simple
to use.
If you get it on your skin
or clothes, simply rinse
with plenty of water.
DEF is not harmful for
humans nor animals.
DEF is not explosive.
6. Where can I find DEF?
You will find DEF pumps either at
your commercial terminal or at
truckstops, and they will have filling
nozzles similar to those you use for
diesel.
There is also an option to buy the
product in 2.5 gallon bottles with a
filling spout which makes it easy to
pour into your DEF tank. These
bottles are available from various
outlets.
