THE SOLAR SYSTEM

The solar system
The Solar System is made up of all the
planets that orbit our Sun. In addition to
planets, the Solar System also consists of
moons, comets, asteroids, minor planets, dust
and gas. The inner solar system contains the
Sun, Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars. The
main asteroid belt lies between the orbits of
Mars and Jupiter.
Mercury
Mercury is the smallest planet in the Solar System and the closest to the Sun. Its orbit around the Sun takes 87.97
Earth days, the shortest of all the Sun's planets, Mercury orbits the Sun within Earth's orbit as an inferior planet, and
its apparent distance from the Sun as viewed from Earth never exceeds 28°. This proximity to the Sun means the
planet can only be seen near the western horizon after sunset or the eastern horizon before sunrise, usually
in twilight. At this time, it may appear as a bright star-like object, but is more difficult to observe than Venus. From
Earth, the planet telescopically displays the complete range of phases, similar to Venus and the Moon, which recurs
over its synodic period of approximately 116 d Mercury rotates in a way that is unique in the Solar System. It is tidally
locked with the Sun in a 3:2 spin–orbit resonance,[17] meaning that relative to the fixed stars, it rotates on its axis
exactly three times for every two revolutions it makes around the Sun.[a][18] As seen from the Sun, in a frame of
reference that rotates with the orbital motion, it appears to rotate only once every two Mercurian years. An observer
on Mercury would therefore see only one day every two Mercurian years.
Venus
◦ Venus is the second planet from the Sun., Venus can cast shadows and can be visible to the naked eye in broad

within Earth's orbit, and so never appears to venture far from the Sun, either setting in the west just after dusk or
rising in the east a little while before dawn. Venus orbits the Sun every 224.7 Earth days. It has a synodic

◦ Earth is the third planet from the Sun and the only known to harbour and support life. 29.2% of Earth's surface is
land consisting of continents and islands. The remaining 70.8% is covered with water, mostly by oceans,
seas, gulfs, and other salt-water bodies, but also by lakes, rivers, and other freshwater, which together constitute
the hydrosphere. Much of Earth's polar regions are covered in ice. Earth's outer layer is divided into several
rigid tectonic plates that migrate across the surface over many millions of years, while its interior remains active
with a solid iron inner core, a liquid outer core that generates Earth's magnetic field, and a convective mantle that
drives plate tectonics. Earth's atmosphere consists mostly of nitrogen and oxygen. More solar energy is received
by tropical regions than polar regions and is redistributed by atmospheric and ocean circulation. Greenhouse
gases also play an important role in regulating the surface temperature. A region's climate is not only determined
by latitude, but also by elevation and proximity to moderating oceans, among other factors. Severe weather, such
as tropical cyclones, thunderstorms, and heatwaves, occurs in most areas and greatly impacts life.
Mars
◦ Mars is the fourth planet from the sun and the second-smallest planet in the Solar System, being larger than
only Mercury. In English, Mars carries the name of the Roman god of war and is often referred to as the "Red
Planet". The latter refers to the effect of the iron oxide prevalent on Mars's surface, which gives it a reddish
appearance (as shown), that is distinctive among the astronomical bodies visible to the naked eye. Mars is
a terrestrial planet with a thin atmosphere, with surface features reminiscent of the impact craters of the Moon and
the valleys, deserts and polar ice caps of Earth. Mars has been explored by several uncrewed spacecraft. Mariner
4 was the first spacecraft to visit Mars; launched by NASA on 28 November 1964, it made its closest approach to
the planet on 15 July 1965. Mariner 4 detected the weak Martian radiation belt, measured at about 0.1% that of
Earth, and captured the first images of another planet from deep space.[24] The latest spacecraft to successfully
land on Mars are CNSA's Tianwen-1 lander and Zhurong rover, landed on 14 May 2021.[25] Zhurong rover was
successfully deployed on 22 May 2021, which makes China the second country to successfully deploy a rover on
Mars, after the United States.[26]
Jupiter
◦ Jupiter is the fifth planet from the Sun and the largest in the Solar System. It is a gas giant with a mass more than
two and a half times that of all the other planets in the Solar System combined, but slightly less than one-
thousandth the mass of the Sun. Jupiter is the third brightest natural object in the Earth's night sky after
the Moon and Venus. People have been observing it since prehistoric times. Jupiter is primarily composed
of hydrogen, but helium constitutes one-quarter of its mass and one-tenth of its volume. It likely has a rocky core of
heavier elements,[16] but, like the other giant planets, Jupiter lacks a well-defined solid surface. The ongoing
contraction of its interior generates heat greater than the amount received from the Sun. Because of its rapid
rotation, the planet's shape is an oblate spheroid; it has a slight but noticeable bulge around the equator. The outer
atmosphere is visibly segregated into several bands at different latitudes, with turbulence and storms along their
interacting boundaries. A prominent result of this is the Great Red Spot, a giant storm known to have existed since
at least the 17th century when telescopes first saw it.
Saturn
◦ Saturn is the sixth planet from the Sun and the second-largest in the Solar System, after Jupiter. It is a gas
giant with an average radius of about nine and a half times that of Earth.[22][23] It only has one-eighth the average
density of Earth; however, with its larger volume, Saturn is over 95 times more massive. Saturn's interior is most
likely composed of a core of iron–nickel and rock (silicon and oxygen compounds). Its core is surrounded by a
deep layer of metallic hydrogen, an intermediate layer of liquid hydrogen and liquid helium, and finally, a gaseous
outer layer. Saturn has a pale yellow hue due to ammonia crystals in its upper atmosphere. An electrical
current within the metallic hydrogen layer is thought to give rise to Saturn's planetary magnetic field, which is
weaker than Earth's, but which has a magnetic moment 580 times that of Earth due to Saturn's larger size.
Saturn's magnetic field strength is around one-twentieth of Jupiter's.[29] The outer atmosphere is generally bland
and lacking in contrast, although long-lived features can appear. Wind speeds on Saturn can reach 1,800 km/h
(1,100 mph; 500 m/s), higher than on Jupiter but not as high as on Neptune.
Uranus
◦ Uranus is the seventh planet from the Sun. It has the third-largest planetary radius and fourth-largest planetary
mass in the Solar System. Uranus is similar in composition to Neptune, and both have bulk chemical compositions
which differ from that of the larger gas giants Jupiter and Saturn. For this reason, scientists often classify Uranus
and Neptune as "ice giants" to distinguish them from the other giant planets.
◦ As with gas giants ice giants also lack a well defined "solid surface." Uranus's atmosphere is similar to Jupiter's
and Saturn's in its primary composition of hydrogen and helium, but it contains more "ices" such as
water, ammonia, and methane, along with traces of other hydrocarbons.[17] It has the coldest planetary atmosphere
in the Solar System, with a minimum temperature of 49 K (−224 °C; −371 °F), and has a complex,
layered cloud structure with water thought to make up the lowest clouds and methane the uppermost layer of
clouds.[17] The interior of Uranus is mainly composed of ices and rock.

The solar system

  • 3. The Solar System is made up of all the planets that orbit our Sun. In addition to planets, the Solar System also consists of moons, comets, asteroids, minor planets, dust and gas. The inner solar system contains the Sun, Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars. The main asteroid belt lies between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter.
  • 4. Mercury Mercury is the smallest planet in the Solar System and the closest to the Sun. Its orbit around the Sun takes 87.97 Earth days, the shortest of all the Sun's planets, Mercury orbits the Sun within Earth's orbit as an inferior planet, and its apparent distance from the Sun as viewed from Earth never exceeds 28°. This proximity to the Sun means the planet can only be seen near the western horizon after sunset or the eastern horizon before sunrise, usually in twilight. At this time, it may appear as a bright star-like object, but is more difficult to observe than Venus. From Earth, the planet telescopically displays the complete range of phases, similar to Venus and the Moon, which recurs over its synodic period of approximately 116 d Mercury rotates in a way that is unique in the Solar System. It is tidally locked with the Sun in a 3:2 spin–orbit resonance,[17] meaning that relative to the fixed stars, it rotates on its axis exactly three times for every two revolutions it makes around the Sun.[a][18] As seen from the Sun, in a frame of reference that rotates with the orbital motion, it appears to rotate only once every two Mercurian years. An observer on Mercury would therefore see only one day every two Mercurian years.

  • 6. Earth ◦ Earth is the third planet from the Sun and the only known to harbour and support life. 29.2% of Earth's surface is land consisting of continents and islands. The remaining 70.8% is covered with water, mostly by oceans, seas, gulfs, and other salt-water bodies, but also by lakes, rivers, and other freshwater, which together constitute the hydrosphere. Much of Earth's polar regions are covered in ice. Earth's outer layer is divided into several rigid tectonic plates that migrate across the surface over many millions of years, while its interior remains active with a solid iron inner core, a liquid outer core that generates Earth's magnetic field, and a convective mantle that drives plate tectonics. Earth's atmosphere consists mostly of nitrogen and oxygen. More solar energy is received by tropical regions than polar regions and is redistributed by atmospheric and ocean circulation. Greenhouse gases also play an important role in regulating the surface temperature. A region's climate is not only determined by latitude, but also by elevation and proximity to moderating oceans, among other factors. Severe weather, such as tropical cyclones, thunderstorms, and heatwaves, occurs in most areas and greatly impacts life.
  • 7. Mars ◦ Mars is the fourth planet from the sun and the second-smallest planet in the Solar System, being larger than only Mercury. In English, Mars carries the name of the Roman god of war and is often referred to as the "Red Planet". The latter refers to the effect of the iron oxide prevalent on Mars's surface, which gives it a reddish appearance (as shown), that is distinctive among the astronomical bodies visible to the naked eye. Mars is a terrestrial planet with a thin atmosphere, with surface features reminiscent of the impact craters of the Moon and the valleys, deserts and polar ice caps of Earth. Mars has been explored by several uncrewed spacecraft. Mariner 4 was the first spacecraft to visit Mars; launched by NASA on 28 November 1964, it made its closest approach to the planet on 15 July 1965. Mariner 4 detected the weak Martian radiation belt, measured at about 0.1% that of Earth, and captured the first images of another planet from deep space.[24] The latest spacecraft to successfully land on Mars are CNSA's Tianwen-1 lander and Zhurong rover, landed on 14 May 2021.[25] Zhurong rover was successfully deployed on 22 May 2021, which makes China the second country to successfully deploy a rover on Mars, after the United States.[26]
  • 8. Jupiter ◦ Jupiter is the fifth planet from the Sun and the largest in the Solar System. It is a gas giant with a mass more than two and a half times that of all the other planets in the Solar System combined, but slightly less than one- thousandth the mass of the Sun. Jupiter is the third brightest natural object in the Earth's night sky after the Moon and Venus. People have been observing it since prehistoric times. Jupiter is primarily composed of hydrogen, but helium constitutes one-quarter of its mass and one-tenth of its volume. It likely has a rocky core of heavier elements,[16] but, like the other giant planets, Jupiter lacks a well-defined solid surface. The ongoing contraction of its interior generates heat greater than the amount received from the Sun. Because of its rapid rotation, the planet's shape is an oblate spheroid; it has a slight but noticeable bulge around the equator. The outer atmosphere is visibly segregated into several bands at different latitudes, with turbulence and storms along their interacting boundaries. A prominent result of this is the Great Red Spot, a giant storm known to have existed since at least the 17th century when telescopes first saw it.
  • 9. Saturn ◦ Saturn is the sixth planet from the Sun and the second-largest in the Solar System, after Jupiter. It is a gas giant with an average radius of about nine and a half times that of Earth.[22][23] It only has one-eighth the average density of Earth; however, with its larger volume, Saturn is over 95 times more massive. Saturn's interior is most likely composed of a core of iron–nickel and rock (silicon and oxygen compounds). Its core is surrounded by a deep layer of metallic hydrogen, an intermediate layer of liquid hydrogen and liquid helium, and finally, a gaseous outer layer. Saturn has a pale yellow hue due to ammonia crystals in its upper atmosphere. An electrical current within the metallic hydrogen layer is thought to give rise to Saturn's planetary magnetic field, which is weaker than Earth's, but which has a magnetic moment 580 times that of Earth due to Saturn's larger size. Saturn's magnetic field strength is around one-twentieth of Jupiter's.[29] The outer atmosphere is generally bland and lacking in contrast, although long-lived features can appear. Wind speeds on Saturn can reach 1,800 km/h (1,100 mph; 500 m/s), higher than on Jupiter but not as high as on Neptune.
  • 10. Uranus ◦ Uranus is the seventh planet from the Sun. It has the third-largest planetary radius and fourth-largest planetary mass in the Solar System. Uranus is similar in composition to Neptune, and both have bulk chemical compositions which differ from that of the larger gas giants Jupiter and Saturn. For this reason, scientists often classify Uranus and Neptune as "ice giants" to distinguish them from the other giant planets. ◦ As with gas giants ice giants also lack a well defined "solid surface." Uranus's atmosphere is similar to Jupiter's and Saturn's in its primary composition of hydrogen and helium, but it contains more "ices" such as water, ammonia, and methane, along with traces of other hydrocarbons.[17] It has the coldest planetary atmosphere in the Solar System, with a minimum temperature of 49 K (−224 °C; −371 °F), and has a complex, layered cloud structure with water thought to make up the lowest clouds and methane the uppermost layer of clouds.[17] The interior of Uranus is mainly composed of ices and rock.
