PEOPLE • population: 428,672 inhabitants • population densitity: 1,157 inhabitants/km2 • ethnic groups: Hungarians (3,84%), Czechs (1,86%), Germans (0,28%), Moravians (0,15%), Croats (0,14%), Ruthenes (0,11%), Ukrainians (0,11%), Roma (0,08%) and Poles (0,08%) • there are more women in Bratislava than men • the biggest district is Bratislava V which is called Petržalka with 121,259 inhabitants • the average age in the city was 38,7 years in 2001
  6. 6. LANGUAGE • Slovak republic has only one national language – Slovak language • almost everyone in Bratislava speaks Slovak • Hungarian is also spoken by a minority of Bratislava residents

  9. 9. TRANSPORT Airport Bratislava was opened in 1951 and it´s the largest airport in Slovakia. It has 3 terminals and handles about 1,5 milion passengers per year. It is situated only 20 minutes from the centre of Bratislava and you can travel to Liverpool, Barcelona, Brusel,... from it. INTERNATIONAL JUNCTIONS: • the D1 motorway (Bratislava to Trnava, Nitra, Trencin) • the D2 motorway (connects to Prague, Brno, Budapest) • the A6 motorway to Vienna BRIDGES OVER THE DANUBE: • Lafranconi Bridge, New Bridge, Old bridge, Bridge Apollo and Port bridge.
  10. 10. TRANSPORT PUBLIC TRANSPORT: • three types of vehicles (1. buses - 60 daily routes, 20 nightly routes; 2. trams – 13 heavily-used commuter routes; 3. Trolleybuses – 13 main routes) WATER TRANSPORT: Is secured through a port on the Danube from both sides, from the Black Sea is connected by channel Rhine Main Danube to the North Sea. Personal transport use port mainly for trip and recreation cruises to Gabcikovo watterwork, to Devin castle, cruises the city of Bratislava and also to near Vienna and Budapest.

THE HISTORY OF THE TOWN • first written reference - Salzburg Annals • Bratislava principality • king Andrew II. - several royal privileges • king Sigismund of Luxembourg - minting privilege • all privileges - King Matthias Corvinus • Academia Istropolitana • in 1468 - another privilege – of sword. • in 1536 - capital of Hungarian Empire • in 1543 - Coronation town of Hungarian Kings and seat of the Archbishop

THE HISTORY OF THE TOWN • after this, during three Centuries, 11 kings and 8 royal spouses were coronated in St. Martins Dome • 1741 - Empress Maria Theresa was coronated • 1775 - City Walls were pulled down and development of the town started • 1780 - first manufacture was opened • 1783 - all central authorities transfered to Buda- coronation jewels were taken to Vienna • 1805 - Peace of Pressburg was concluded between France and Austria in the Primate’s palace • 1908 - BA was besieged by Napoleon army • 1811 - Bratislava Castle burnt down • 1818 - first steam boat sailed on the Danube River

THE HISTORY OF THE TOWN • 1919 - Pressburg became part of Czecho-Slovakia. • 1919 - The town's official name becomes "Bratislava„ • 1939 - Bratislava - the capital of the First Slovak Republic • 1944 - 1945 - The town was occupied by German Army • 1945 - The Czechoslovak Socialist Republic • 1968 - The city became the capital of the Slovak Socialist Republic • 1989 - The Velvet Revolution • 1993 - Bratislava became the capital of the Slovakia

BRATISLAVA CASTLE • the massive rectangular building with four corner towers stands on an isolated rocky hill of the Little Carpathians directly above the Danube river in the middle of Bratislava • because of its size and location, it has been a dominant feature of the city for centuries DOMINATES THE CITY OF BRATISLAVA

DOMINATES THE CITY OF BRATISLAVA SLAVÍN • is a memorial monument and military cemetery • it is the burial ground of thousands of Soviet Army soldiers who fell during World War II while taking over the city in April 1945 from the occupying German Wehrmacht units and the remaining Slovak troops who supported the clero-fascist Tiso government

DOMINATES THE CITY OF BRATISLAVA St Martin‘s Cathedral • was built over the remains of an earlier Romanesque basilica on the edge of the Old Town • today’s three - naved Gothic cathedral (Dóm Svätého Martina in full) was consecrated in 1452, and between 1563 and 1830, 11 Hungarian monarchs including the much-loved Empress Marie Therese and her spouse were crowned here, a fact celebrated by the placement of a replica coronation crown on the top of the 279 foot (85-meter) Gothic spire

  24. 24. BRATISLAVA ZOO The ZOO is really nice and interesting because of diffrent kinds of animals. In fact there are182 kinds of animals. It´s home of unusual animal called lion southafrican, which has white fur. There are many things to do.You can sit in the park, ride a horse etc. But there is one special part of ZOO. It´s DiNOPARK You can find there all dinosaurs which had ever lived.The most famous are tryceraptos,T-Rex. Visiting of ZOO is really good choice to spend day and relax.
