  2. 2. Healthy Soil Biology needs three things:
  3. 3. Oxygen. Water. Food.
  4. 4. Oxygen from Soil Aeration
  5. 5. Powdery dry soil still contains 70% moisture in adsorbed water tightly bounded to the soil colloids.
  6. 6. Biology can access this adsorbed water (roots cannot)
  7. 7. The limiting factor to healthy soil biology:
  8. 8. Food. Not water.
  9. 9. Food source for biology: soluble carbon.
  10. 10. Many soils no longer have enough carbon
  11. 11. Healthy organic matter does not equal soluble carbon
  12. 12. Build soluble carbon with root biomass and root exudates
  13. 13. Build soil carbon with really healthy plants
  14. 14. And with carbon sequestration
  15. 15. 70% of root exudates, 50% of the root biomass, and 30% of the above ground plant biomass contribute to increased organic matter
  16. 16. Fall nitrogen applications degrade soluble carbon
  17. 17. by oxidizing and releasing it into the atmosphere as carbon dioxide
  18. 18. Only 20% of applied nitrogen is used by the crop. Most is leached away and lost to the environment.

  20. 20. Step 1. Build high levels of soluble carbon with really healthy crops and photosynthesis
  21. 21. Step 2. Apply nitrogen only as needed when needed
  22. 22. Step 3. Stabilize nitrogen with sulfur, carbon, and molybdenum to reduce application requirements
