2. Introduction
• The Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC) was the
largest oil exploration and production (E&P) company in India.
The company enjoyed a dominant position in the country's
hydrocarbon sector with 84 per cent market share of crude oil
& gas production. Around 57 per cent petroleum exploration
licenses in India for over 588 thousand sq. km belonged to
ONGC.
• ONGC's major products included petroleum, crude natural
gas, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), kerosene and
petrochemical feedstock.

4. History
(BIRTH AND GROWTH OF ONGC)
• Creation of Oil and Natural Gas Commission
– Oil & Natural Gas Directorate upgraded to Oil and Natural Gas
Commission in 1956.
– Commission converted into a statutory body by Act of
Parliament in 1959 for planning, promoting, organising and
implementation of programme for development of Petroleum
resources in India.
– Hydrocarbon India Ltd. (HIL), precursor to ONGC Videsh Ltd.,
formed in 1965.
• Oil and Natural Gas Commission becomes Oil and Natural
Gas Corporation on 1st Feb.’1994.
• In 1997 ONGC is declared as one of the “Navratna” PSU.
• ONGC becomes a “Maharatna” PSU in 2010.
6. Ranking
• In a government survey for FY 2011–12, it was ranked as the
largest profit making PSU in India. ONGC has
been ranked 357th in the Fortune Global 500 list of the
world's biggest corporations for the year 2012. It
is ranked 17th among the Top 250 Global Energy Companies
by Platts.
• ONGC has improved on its global ranking up by a notch to
feature at 21st place among the global energy majors. In the
Asia/Pacific (APAC) rim, ONGC was featured at
the 5th position, up from 7th last year. ONGC has also
maintained its position as the 3rd ranked Exploration and
Production company globally.

8. Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)
• As a public sector enterprise, ONGC has a long
and cherished tradition of commendable
initiatives, institutionalized programs and
practices of CSR.
• There are many social responsibilities which have
been undertaken by ONGC some of them are:
– Education
– Healthcare
– Entrepreneurship schemes
– Women Empowerment Projects and
– Environmental Protection
9. PRECEPTION TOWARDS EMPLOYEES
• Company has vast pool of skilled and talented
professionals–the most valuable asset for the
company. Company continued to extend
several welfare benefits to the employees and
their families by way of comprehensive
medical care, education, housing and social
security.
