This midterm assignment consists of two 2 questions to test knowledge and assimilation of the
course objectives. You should have 1 page for each question. The exclusive use of readings
from this course is mandatory.
Please answer both questions listed below in paragraph format. Please cite your sources using
the reference list style within the Turabian citation style. Please review your work for errors
before submitting it and ensure that it is grammatically correct.
Assignment Questions:
1. What is the importance of identity in African cultures?
2. The word 'tribe' is so general and vague that it cannot be replaced with any one
word. What are the contexts in which you might use the words 'people', 'kin group',
and 'nationality'.
Due date: Sunday, October 23, 2016 before 8:55pm ET.
Below are the general instructions —read thoroughly and carefully!
Length: No more and no fewer than one (1) page per question
Do not forget to add your name, assignment name, class information, date, page number, etc.. in
the document. If you wish you may use a cover page, with your name and assignment name,
date, page numbers, etc. however that page does not count towards the 1 page of your essay. If
you do not wish to use a cover page then your name and assignment name, date, page
numbers, etc. should be in a header--one line. In Word, go to “insert” and then “header.” Use
the “help” function to learn more about inserting a header in Word. This professionalizes your
work.
2. Make sure you list the sources you used within the essay in a References List (use a different
page which will not count towards your 1 page…).
Use standard Word settings for the assignment. Double-space, 12 pt. font, 1” margins. Use
subheadings to set off the various sections of the paper, giving the subheadings a catchy title to
let the reader know what’s in the section.
Save the document as your name on the file and the assignment name, too. Use this form:
Yourlastname322MT.doc or Yourlastname322MT.docx.
Make sure you structure your answer so that you address the key issues by providing definitions
and analyses as based on the research to support your points. Use scholarly sources to argue
and justify your views. Use references. NO DIRECT QUOTATION which involves quoting word
for word one or more sentences from an author or source. This does not mean no references.
Be sure to use Turabian Reference style ( See the “Turabian Quick Guide” in Resources for
more details on how to cite sources in your assignments). Make sure you draw from the class
readings. It is important to write in third person (not first) in a formal paper. Take yourself out of
the paper as much as possible. Present arguments with supporting research that is logical and
solid, showing that you understand the issue at hand and the theoretical IR concepts behind it.
Plagiarism will not be tolerated. Any evidence, even one sentence, of plagiarism will result in a
“0” on the assignment. Therefore, be sure to include references. One does not simply put a
reference at the end of a paragraph, but rather immediately after the information you took from
your source. Refer to the syllabus for information regarding appropriate academic sources. Use
in text citations, which should follow the Turabian reference style.
3. All assignments should be uploaded as attachments within the Assignments section of the
classroom, no later than Sunday at 8:55pm ET of Week 3. LATE ASSIGNMENTS WILL NOT BE
ACCEPTED. To see feedback on the assignment once it is graded, go back to the Assignment
folder and find the uploaded document with comments. You will know the document with
comments because it will have my initials at the end of the file name. There also will be a rubric
with your score in comments.
