38. 38. MERCHANT ACCOUNTS
1.877.680.4ACE
39. 39. WHAT IS A MERCHANT ACCOUNT?
A MERCHANT ACCOUNT is an account that enables merchants to accept credit card payments. They can be obtained through a Licensed Agent of a financial institution. Any merchant who wants to take credit card orders must establish a merchant account.
It is important to choose the right type of merchant account and payment processor for the kind of business you will be conducting.
Some examples of MERCHANT ACCOUNTS include:

Retail
 40. 40. Restaurant
 41. 41. Petroleum
 42. 42. Hospitality

 44. 44. 3 TYPES OF MERCHANT ACCOUNTS

RETAIL MERCHANT ACCOUNTS:

This type of account usually offers the lowest transaction fee, as long as the following conditions are met:

Card is swiped

 47. 47.

MOTO MERCHANT ACCOUNTS:

Mail Order – Telephone Order accounts tend to charge a higher transaction rate and are used when credit cards cannot be physically swiped. Merchants usually process credit card payments by entering the credit card information directly into a terminal.

INTERNET ACCOUNTS:

Internet merchant accounts are similar to MOTO accounts, but can only be used for internet transactions. Merchants with internet accounts use a virtual terminal or payment service gateway to process credit card payments.
Examples of MOTO Merchant Accounts:

Home-Based Businesses…Mail Order Catalogs…Delivery Services

Examples of INTERNET Merchant Accounts:

Shopping Carts…amazon.com…L.L. 75. 75.

3-TIERED PRICING EXAMPLES

In the examples that follow, we use Ace Merchant Processing’s
Buy Rates compared to the given Example Rates to show
different variances of profit. Buy rates change approximately
1-2 times per year. Example 1 is a Qualified transaction,
Example 2 is a Mid-Qualified transaction and Example 3 is a
Non-Qualified transaction.
1.877.680.4ACE
76. 76. Example 1: Qualified Transaction
A $100.00 purchase is made and the card is swiped on the terminal. The merchant will be charged the Qualified Rate.
MERCHANT COST
Merchant is charged 1.69% which equals $1.69 plus a transaction fee of 21¢, for a total of $1.90. This transaction cost the merchant $1.90.
AMP COST
AMP’s cost is $100.00 x 1.65% which equals $1.65 plus a transaction fee of 18¢, for a total of $1.83.
AMP PROFITTotal Profit for AMP for this transaction is $0.07 ($1.90 minus $1.83)
1.877.680.4ACE
77. 77. Example 2: Mid-Qualified Transaction
A $100.00 purchase is made using a personal credit card but is key-entered into the terminal. (This usually occurs when a phone order is placed or when the terminal cannot read the magnetic strip on the card.) In this case, the merchant will be charged the Mid-Qualified Rate.
MERCHANT COST
Merchant is charged 2.44% which equals $2.44 plus a transaction fee of 21¢, for a total of $2.65. This transaction cost the merchant $2.65.
AMP COST
AMP’s cost is $100.00 x 1.95% which equals $1.95 plus a transaction fee of 18¢, for a total of $2.13.
AMP PROFITTotal Profit for AMP for this transaction is $0.52 ($2.65 minus $2.13)
1.877.680.4ACE
78. 78. Example 3: Non-Qualified Transaction
A $100.00 purchase is made using a business card and swiped through a terminal with signature. The merchant will be charged the Non-Qualified Rate.
MERCHANT COST
Merchant is charged 3.19% which equals $3.19 plus a transaction fee of 21¢, for a total of $3.40. This transaction cost the merchant $3.40.
AMP COST
AMP’s cost is $100.00 x 2.25% which equals $2.25 plus a transaction fee of 18¢, for a total of $2.43.
AMP PROFITTotal Profit for AMP for this transaction is $0.97 ($3.40 minus $2.43)
1.877.680.4ACE
79. 79.

ERR PRICING EXAMPLES

In the examples that follow, we use Ace Merchant Processing’s
Buy Rates compared to the given Example Rates to show
different variances by profit. Buy rates change approximately
1-2 times per year.
What ERR Means:
ERR is effective for Mid & Non Qual Transactions. ERR Means , Merchant is charged the interchange fee for Mid & Non Qual Transaction + the ERR charge which is 1% in this chase
1.877.680.4ACE
80. 80. Example 1: Qualified Transaction
A $100.00 purchase is made using a personal credit card and keyed through a terminal, with no signature.
81. 81. Example 2: Non-Qualified Transaction
A $100.00 purchase is made using a business credit card and keyed through a terminal with no signature. The merchant will be charged the Non-Qualified Rate.
MERCHANT COST
Merchant is charged 1% ERR which equals Non Qual Transaction passed @ 2.25% which equals to $2.25 plus 1% ERR charge which equals to $2.25 + $1.00 = $3.25 and transaction fee of 21¢, for a total of $3.46. This transaction cost the merchant $3.46.
AMP COST
AMP’s cost is $100.00 x 2.25% which equals $2.25 plus a transaction fee of 18¢, for a total of $2.43.
AMP PROFITTotal Profit for AMP for this transaction is $1.03 ($3.46 minus $2.43)
1.877.680.4ACE
82. 82.

PASS THRU PRICING EXAMPLES

In the examples that follow, we use Ace Merchant Processing’s
Buy Rates compared to the given Example Rates to show
different variances of profit. Buy rates change approximately
1-2 times per year. Example shows Pass Thru interchange pricing
and profit for all transaction type.
* PASS THRU = 1.54% + 10¢
1.877.680.4ACE
83. 83. Example 1: Qualified Transaction
A $100.00 purchase is made and the card is swiped on the terminal. The merchant will be charged the Qualified Rate.
MERCHANT COST
Merchant is charged PT + 0.20% + 11¢ which equals $1.65 (1.65% pass thru rates for qualified transaction) plus a transaction fee of 10¢ (pass thru rates for qualified transaction) for a total of $1.75 plus 0.20% of $100.00 = $0.20 + 0.11 = 0.33 so total = $2.08. This transaction cost the merchant $2.08.
AMP COST
AMP’s cost is $100.00 x 1.65% which equals $1.65 plus a transaction fee of 18¢, for a total of $1.83.
AMP PROFITTotal Profit for AMP for this transaction is $0.25 ($2.08 minus $1.83)
1.877.680.4ACE
Merchant is charged PT + 0.20% + 11¢ which equals $1.95 (1.95% pass thru rates for qualified transaction) plus a transaction fee of 10¢ (pass thru rates for qualified transaction) for a total of $2.05 plus 0.20% of $100.00 = $0.20 + 0.11 = 0.33 so total = $2.38. This transaction cost the merchant $2.38.
AMP COST
AMP’s cost is $100.00 x 1.95% which equals $1.95 plus a transaction fee of 18¢, for a total of $2.13.
AMP PROFITTotal Profit for AMP for this transaction is $0.25 ($2.65 minus $2.13)
1.877.680.4ACE
85. 85. Example 3: Non-Qualified Transaction
A $100.00 purchase is made using a business card and swiped through a terminal with signature. The merchant will be charged the Non-Qualified Rate.
MERCHANT COST
Merchant is charged PT + 0.20% + 11¢ which equals $2.25 (2.25% pass thru rates for qualified transaction) plus a transaction fee of 10¢ (pass thru rates for qualified transaction) for a total of $2.35 plus 0.20% of $100.00 = $0.20 + 0.11 = 0.33 so total = $2.68. This transaction cost the merchant $2.68.
AMP COST
AMP’s cost is $100.00 x 2.25% which equals $2.25 plus a transaction fee of 18¢, for a total of $2.43.
AMP PROFITTotal Profit for AMP for this transaction is $0.25 ($2.68 minus $2.43)
1.877.680.4ACE
86. 86. DEBIT PROCESSING
1.877.680.4ACE
87. 87. DEBIT CARDS
According to statistics from VISA and MasterCard, 78% of all cards used in 2007 under $150 were check/debit cards. Although these cards may have the VISA or MasterCard logos, they are NOT credit cards. These cards are directly linked to the cardholder’s checking account and will only be approved for a transaction if there is sufficient funds to cover the transaction.
There are 2 ways a merchant can process a check card:
1)ON-LINE DEBIT: By entering their PIN into a PIN pad, or
2)OFF-LINE DEBIT: By swiping the check card the same as a credit card.
1.877.680.4ACE
88. 88. DEBIT CARDS

ON-LINE DEBIT:
 89. 89. Also referred to as “PIN-Based” Debit.
 90. 90. A merchant must be set up to “capture” check card Personal Identification Numbers (PINs) using a PIN Pad connected to the merchant’s terminal.
 91. 91. By capturing the PIN, the merchant will be charged a transaction fee (debit fee) instead of paying his/her qualified rate.
 92. 92. OFF-LINE DEBIT:
 93. 93. Also referred to as“Signature-Based” Debit.
 94. 94. A merchant swipes the card through their terminal and the customer signs the receipt (exactly the same as a credit card).
 95. 95. The merchant will be charged the qualified debit rate (i.e. a swiped transaction).

1.877.680.4ACE
96. 96. HOW PIN DEBIT WORKS

When a card is presented for a purchase, the merchant asks, “Debit or Credit?”
 97. 97. The cardholder chooses Debit and the merchant swipes the card through his/her terminal.
 98. 98. The cardholder is then asked to enter their PIN on the PIN pad.
 99. 99. The cardholder does not sign a receipt for the transaction.

**It is important to point out, there is no difference in cost to the cardholder for either credit or debit transactions.**
1.877.680.4ACE
100. 100. DEBIT CARDS

PIN VS SIGNATURE DEBIT EXAMPLE:

In the example below, we compare Ace Merchant Processing’s
rates of PIN Based Debit against Signature Debit.Buy rates
change approximately 1-2 times per year. The box below
shows the savings for a merchant with an Average Ticket of
$50.00 per transaction.
If this merchant did 500 transactions per month and they were
capturing PINs for check cards, using the national average of
55%, they would save $137.50per month. 102. 102. WHAT IS EBT?
EBT stands for “Electronic Benefits Transfer.” It is a way of delivering Food Stamp benefits without paper coupons. Using a plastic card that works like a debit card, recipients may access their benefits at retail Point-of-Sale (POS) devices.
Supermarkets, grocery stores and convenience stores- which have been authorized for food stamp acceptance by the USDA-FNS - are the primary target markets for the food stamp EBT program.
Consumers can swipe a debit card in the debit card terminal, instead of keeping up with paper coupons. 42 states are fully online with EBT for food stamps and most of the rest are pending.
1.877.680.4ACE
198. 198. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
1.877.680.4ACE
199. 199. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q. WHAT IS BATCH PROCESSING? WHAT DOES BATCH OUT MEAN?
Batch processing occurs when a merchant transmits the “batch” of daily sales stores in the terminal for processing. An “open” batch is one that is not yet “closed.” To “close” a batch or to “batch-out” means to transmit the information from the merchant’s location (terminal or software) to our processor.

Q. WHAT IS A BATCH FEE?
This is a fee charged each time a merchant “batches-out” their terminal or software. AMP’s default Batch Fee is 20¢ per batch. If a merchant is open everyday and batches out one time each day, they will be charged $6.00 per month.

Q. WHAT TIME DOES AUTO-BATCH OCCUR?
Auto batch or auto-settlement occurs at midnight.
Q. WHAT IS AUTHORIZATION?
Authorization is a request from a merchant to charge a credit card. The credit card is not actually charged until the authorization is settled.
1.877.680.4ACE
200. 200. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q. WHAT IS SETTLEMENT?
Settlement is a procedure in which a merchant requests that some or all authorized transactions be processed by a credit card processor. This processing includes charging the customer's credit card and transferring the money owed to the merchant.

Q. WHAT IS GROSS SALES?
Gross Sales means the total dollar amount of all sales with nothing subtracted.
Q. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A “VOID” AND A CREDIT/REFUND?
Void means cancelling a credit card transaction that has been authorized, but not settled. Credit/Refund means cancelling a credit card transaction that has been authorized and settled.
Q. WHAT IS A RETRIEVAL FEE?
A retrieval fee is a fee for requesting a copy of the transaction receipt for a transaction that was processed. AMP’s Retrieval Fee is 10¢per item.
1.877.680.4ACE
201. 201. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q. WHAT DOES A CHARGEBACK MEAN?
A chargeback is a reversal of a credit card transaction, as viewed from the perspective of the merchant. It usually occurs when a consumer files a complaint with their bank or credit/debit card provider. This usually happens when a consumer discovers fraudulent transactions on their statement. The bank will investigate the complaints, and will “take back” the value of the original transaction, together with an additional fee, directly from the merchant’s account, unless the merchant can prove the transaction was legitimate. AMP’s Chargeback Fee is $25.00.
Q. WHAT IS A MINIMIM MONTHLY FEE?
To help maintain a level of excellent service and support to our merchants, our accounts come with a Monthly Minimum of $20.00. The minimum is calculated by multiplying your qualified discount rate against your total sales for the given month. This amount is then subtracted from your minimum and you are charged the difference. For example, if you had $750.00 in sales for January and are paying 2.00% as your qualified rate, you would be charged the difference of $5.00 with a $20 minimum. Ex: $20.00 - ($750.00 X 2.00%). On the other hand, if you processed $1,000 in charges, you would not be charged anything as it equals or exceeds the minimum. Keep in mind you are only charged the difference and not simply a flat rate.
1.877.680.4ACE
202. 202. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q. WHAT IS AVS?
AVS stands for Address Verification Service. It is a system used to verify the identity of the person claiming to own the credit card. The system will check the billing address of the credit card provided by the user with the address on file at the credit card company. AMP charges 10¢ per item for Electronic AVS.

Q. WHAT IS VOICE AVS?
Voice AVS is manually verifying the address of a cardholder against the card by calling the card in to the processor’s help desk. AMP charges $2.00 per item for Voice AVS.

Q. WHAT IS A VOICE AUTHORIZATION FEE?
This fee is only charged when you call in your transaction to an 800 number. It is useful if your terminal or software isn’t working and you need to perform an authorization. Most merchants do not need to use this service. AMP charges 75¢ for Voice Authorization.
1.877.680.4ACE
203. 203. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q. WHAT IS EBT? DO YOU PROCESS EBT-FOOD STAMPS?
EBT stands for Electronic Benefit Transfer. It is an electronic system that allows a recipient to authorize transfer of their government benefits from a Federal account to a retailer account to pay for products received. Yes, we process EBT-Food stamps. AMP charges 20¢ per Transaction for EBT.

Q. WHAT IS A REWARDS CARD?
Visa & MasterCard Reward Cards are types of cards that give back to the consumer with items such as cash back, mileage or points.
1.877.680.4ACE
