Helsinki Region Travel Time Matrix is an open dataset that contains travel time and distance information from the Capital Region of Helsinki. The dataset has been published from two years: 2013 and 2015. In these slides, we present what changes can be observed in regional accessibility patterns based on these two datasets.

Changes in travel-times in the Capital Region of Helsinki

  1. 1. Vuokko Heikinheimo, Henrikki Tenkanen, Maria Salonen & Tuuli Toivonen Accessibility Research Group University of Helsinki Changes in Regional Accessibility Patterns based on the Helsinki Region Travel Time Matrix
  2. 2. Contents of this Presentation • Background: – New Transport Lines in the Capital Region – Helsinki Region Travel Time Matrix data – What’s new in the 2015 dataset? • Regional changes: – Most accessible locations (”Best 10 %”) • Examples: – Changes in public transport accessibility – Travel time maps for selected destinations CONTENTS BACKGROUND REGIONAL CHANGES EXAMPLES REFERENCES
  3. 3. New Transport Lines in the Capital Region • New rail line to the airport (Kehärata) opened up for traffic on 1 July 2015 • New bus route network in Vantaa was launched on 10 August 2015 • New transverse ”Trunk route” bus 560 between Rastila and Myyrmäki More information on routes and schedules from Helsinki Region Transport (HRT) CONTENTS BACKGROUND REGIONAL CHANGES EXAMPLES REFERENCES
  4. 4. Helsinki Region Travel Time Matrix CONTENTS BACKGROUND REGIONAL CHANGES EXAMPLES REFERENCES • Travel time and distance information for walking, public transportation and car from the Capital Region of Helsinki. • Results between all 250 x 250 m grid squares in the Region are available for 2013 and 2015 • More information is available at the Accessibility Research Group’s website: http://blogs.helsinki.fi/accessibility/helsinki-region-travel-time-matrix/ Figure 1. Example visualization of travel time by public transportation during midday traffic for one of the 13231 destinations (Helsinki Central Railway Station) included in the Helsinki Region Travel Time Matrix datasets
  5. 5. What’s new in the 2015 dataset? • Results for midday traffic are fully comparable between the Travel Time Matrix datasets from 2013 and 2015. Comparisons in this presentation are based on midday travel times. • In addition, the 2015 dataset contains information for morning rush-hour for both public transportation and car. • Furthermore, an additional dataset for travel-related CO2 emissions can be linked to the 2015 dataset. More information on our website! CO2..? CONTENTS BACKGROUND REGIONAL CHANGES EXAMPLES REFERENCES
  6. 6. Most Accessible Grid Squares The most accessible 10 % of the 250 x 250 m grid squares by public tranportation and car Car and public transportation Car Public transportation 2015 CONTENTS BACKGROUND REGIONAL CHANGES EXAMPLES REFERENCES Figure 2. The best 10 % of the 250 x 250 m statistic grid squares in the Capital Region in terms of accessibility by public transportation and car in 2015. • This map shows the best 10 % of all the 250 x 250 m statistic grid squares in the Capital Region (n=13231) in terms of accessibility by public transportation and car based on the Helsinki Region Travel Time Matrix 2013. • Here, the accessibility of a grid square is calculated as the median travel time from all other grid squares to the particular grid square using the selected mode of transport. • ”Hotspot” grid squares that are the most accessible ones with both car and public tranpsortation are shown with purple on the map.
  7. 7. Most Accessible Grid Squares • 10 % best grid squares by public transportation – The general pattern has remained the same – Destinations along new transverse routes have become better Figure 3. The best 10 % of the 250 x 250 m statistic grid squares in the Capital Region in terms of public transport accessibility. CONTENTS BACKGROUND REGIONAL CHANGES EXAMPLES REFERENCES Best 10 % (both years) Best 10 % (only in 2015) Best 10 % (only in 2013)
  8. 8. Most Accessible Grid Squares Figure 4. The best 10 % of the 250 x 250 m statistic grid squares in the Capital Region in terms of accessibility by private car. CONTENTS BACKGROUND REGIONAL CHANGES EXAMPLES REFERENCES Best 10 % (both years) Best 10 % (only in 2015) Best 10 % (only in 2013) • 10 % best grid squares by private car – The general pattern has remained the same – There is no clear pattern in the grid squares that have become more central
  9. 9. Changes in Public Transport Accessibility In the following slides, we visualize the changes in public transport accessibility between 2013 and 2015 for selected destinations based on the Helsinki Region Travel Time Matrix datasets. CONTENTS BACKGROUND REGIONAL CHANGES EXAMPLES REFERENCES Highlights: • Travel times to the Helsinki City Center have become faster from along the new rail line in Vantaa (compare figures 5 and 6). • Connections to the Helsinki-Vantaa airport have become better – more people can travel faster to the airport using public transport (see figure 8 c). • Transverse trips towards Myyrmäki have become faster (figures 11 and 12), while some transverse trips have become slower, for example when traveling towards Tikkurila in Vantaa (figures 13 and 14).
