Into the New
Grid companies face an increasing challenge to meet expectations
amid difficult market conditions and disruptive changes such as
distributed generation.
Pursuing digital transformation across the value chain is one of the
most effective and cost-efficient ways to address business
challenges, develop digital operations and enabling the discovery of
new disruptive business models. Digital transformation is
characterized by its agility and innovative approach.
This overview shows five digital enablers; Digital Field Worker,
Digital Asset Management, Intelligent Grid Operations, Advanced
Metering Operations and Digital Enterprise.
It entails initiatives such as Asset analytics, field force mobility and
ADMS. These digital enablers cover the entire depth and breadth of
digital for grid companies.

While the development of digital technologies in the marketplace is accelerating, grid companies are also
faced with industry challenges, which can be seized as an opportunity to change the business
Accelerated impact of distributed and variable energy sources in
the power system create the need to explore new technologies
and new business models
A changing eco-system with new players in the value chain
create an incentive to develop new business models and new
disruptive services
Higher customer expectations derived from experiences with
digital in other industries create the need for new digital
customer channels and services
Employees’ expectation about the use of digital to make their
jobs easier and more enriching initiates the exploration of the
digital field worker of the future
An explosion of real-time asset data and customer information
mandates dealing with big data
An aging network infrastructure mandates the deployment of
new assets, preferably digitally enabled

Safety, security and environment concerns and tighter
regulations mandate initiatives to improve safety and
compliance
The pressure to drive costs down from multiple authorities
creates the need to be efficient and use digital technologies to
gain productivity

  • 13. 13 Vendor landscapeDigital work permit value proposition E-vision Digital work permit Safety Amount of incidents will be reduced and safety will increase because of the risk analysis and the clear communication between maintenance and operations. Efficiency in maintenance and lower costs Field workers waiting time will significantly decrease. Stability of work will increase because foremen have a clear view on work orders with approved work permits. The control room will also have a better overview on which assets are out of order for maintenance work. Improved compliance This allows to meet targets set by different regulations on work safety and workers protection. It also reduces the risks of contractors being at risk and therefore liability towards third party companies. Current market exists out of many small and large players, with different solutions (SAP, web based, SAP Plugin or non SAP). Most of them can be linked to SAP to have a link to work orders. Accenture has a partnership with e-Vision, which offers the most mature digital work permit solution. For our clients we are the implementation partner, and e- Vision is the solution partner. • 17. Client value Maintenance of the grid is optimally scheduled because asset data is visualized on a 3D GIS map In the field a mobile device can be used to show underground assets or visualize to be built assets  Use of VR/ AR glasses for a 360° Street view or birdeye view  Multiple heatmaps can be visualized on top of the 3D views. For example grid capacity and power quality – the condition of assets.  Use an AR glass to see an additional relevant layer of information, based on GPS coordinations  Within Augmented Reality diverse information can be shows – for example underground pipelines. Data quality is an important prerequisite to implement these solutions. • 21. 21 Data Information Outcomes Insight Action High quality data supports the entire information value chain. It is ultimately the foundation for decision making and actions. High quality data interpreted and put into the right context creates trusted information. Applying knowledge to trusted information generates key insights and understanding. Decisions and actions based on key insights and understanding lead to valuable outcomes. The opposite is true as well: remember the principle of “garbage in, garbage out”: bad quality data leads to bad outcomes. To achieve the desired business outcome, Asset Analytics can help the business infusing Analytics into the decision making process across the organization. Developments in demand for high quality data at utilities The need for high quality data in the utilities industry increases as new challenges and opportunities arise with developments in digital and changes in the industry The need for high quality data Growing regulatory prescriptions Energy transition More demanding consumersBudget constraints New digital technologies Aging network infrastructure Aging Workforce Collaboration Copyright © 2016 Accenture All rights reserved. Breakthrough innovation workshop With a breakthrough workshop, we help our client think differently. To become truly digital, reinvention is vital. It’s rapid creative thinking that will be directly applied to the business situation. Discover Describe Prototype Test Implement Ingredients of a breakthrough innovation workshop Challenge usual business, “the rules of the game” “The electric light did not come from the continuous improvement of candles” Recognizing trends EXAMPLE: Why don’t supermarket offer lanes for premium customers too? Loyal customers with many items can’t use lanes for 10 items or less.  Distributed energy increases capacity  People want to be energy self-sufficient and may disconnect from the grid  More focus on electricity instead of natural gas Co-design innovations We take a group of participants through a rapid co- design process, characterized by rapid iterations and escalating prototypes to test and refine ideas. The output is usually sketches, storyboards, and / or videos, making the suggested solutions tangible and easy to communicate, all the way to working prototypes. Identify unvoiced needs EXAMPLE: Square watermelons in Japan. Small households had to put it on shelves, but there’s a risk of to fall off the shelf.
