  3. 3.  Introduction  Communication is a process by which information is exchanged between individuals through a common system of symbol, signs or gestures.  Communication Skills are the ability to use language and express information effectively.  Effective communication skills are the critical element of our life.  Communication is further classified into verbal and Non verbal communication.

  7. 7.  For engineers most of the project activities are in groups, communication skills are important to communicate easily in group.  Good communication skills can attract the attention on people.  Group discussions  It enables the engineers to share their ideas and explain their thoughts and also to put forward their queries in effective manner.
  8. 8.  Gathering information and Analyzing it.  For computer engineers, one of the prominent part in the software development lifecycle tends to be the role of business analyst.  While gathering requirements for the project, an analyst needs to have pure command over the subject as well as be an adequate communicator so that information can be flown to both the concerned parties in a channelized manner.  Same goes for electrical or instrumentation engineers who are supervising large scale mechanical equipments, if they are not dealt with properly and their usage is not well known to them, communicating at a low level to their associated might create a problem for them
  9. 9.  Communication Skills are very important to crack the interviews.  As effective communication is an essential component for organization success, whether it is the interpersonal intra group organization or external levels.  So the interviewer always looks for engineers who has mastery over communication.  Crack interviews
  10. 10.  During interviews its been truly said that “ It is the you who decide what will be the question asked to you by the interviewer”  So good communication skills are needed to get simple questions.  If you want to get a good job, learn to tell that you are fit and capable for it. If you want to get promotion, impress your boss with your effective communication. If you want your work get done learn to persuade and please others by talk good communication skills are needed.
  11. 11.  Communication Skills are very important to develop confidence to speak in front of large crowd.  Communication skills does not only involve speaking in front of a large crowd, but it also incorporates the sense of managing the resources alongside effective written skills in order to convey the message to rest of public.  Developing self confidence
  12. 12.  Business world is full of presentations so their communication skill helps to explain the presentations.  It gives confidence to encounter the questions asked during the presentations.  Explaining the presentations  Engineers in business organizations usually spends 75 percent of their daily time on communication through writing, reading, listening, speaking, inter-debate etc.
  13. 13.  It does not matter how good you had made the presentation but if you give a poor explanation of presentation, you risk not only making a bad first impression but also losing important valuable new contracts or other opportunities from that potential client in the future increases.

  15. 15.  Leadership  There lies no point in leadership when you cannot get your point across the table, no matter how competent you are, you will not be perceived positively in your profession.  Upon a survey conducted, it was brought to knowledge that more than 50% of the engineering projects that fail are purely due to ineffective people’s management and the inability of a manager to convey his message to the team due to various communication barriers.
  16. 16.  This is the rationality that at all levels, good organizations focus on the soft skills developmental courses to get their associates well versed with the requirement of time.

  19. 19.  Poor communication skills, low confidence levels and improper body language have resulted out in the job race.  Engineers recruited in big companies have to deal with the global clients directly. The command over the language and communication skills plays a vital role in the recruitment process.
  20. 20.  Get work done in effective manner  Getting the work done in effective manner has become more important than having the most knowledge.  Employers give considerable value to graduates acquiring a diverse set of skills in different work environment.
  21. 21.  Besides analytical and problem solving skills, subject specific knowledge, research and improved decision making ability, management skills, understanding of other culture, confidence and competence to work in international environment are considered the most essential qualities for engineers. However, at the bottom of these lies an effective communication skill.
  22. 22.  Tips to improve communication skills Truly said, communication works but for those who work at it.  Slow down your speaking speed.  Think and speak.  Always learn and speak in sentences not in words.  Learn to listen.  Engage the audience by adding the quotation or by telling stories.
  23. 23.  Try to speak in own words.  Changing the tone of voice.  Using right word at right time.  Make a good introduction  Be confident
  24. 24.  Conclusion  From the above presentation we concluded that communication skills are the very important aspects of the engineers life.  Communication skills are much needed in the 21st century to survive in the day to day life for an engineer.  An engineer without good communication is just like a computer without operating system.  Along with knowledge, communication is the path that leads to success.

  • A common misleading statement prevalent in our society continues to be against the learning of communication skills with a thought that it is only meant for those who want to adopt a managerial career in the years ahead. It is a phenomenon which is needed to be practiced at all levels of experience and regardless of the position an individual holds in organization, every one must be proficient in this realm.
  • In our country ,about 75% students of the engineering are from rural areas and most of them are coming through regional language medium schools.No doubt that as they have entered into the engineering colleges ,they do possess intelligence i.e. necessary qualification for higher education and bright future.But ,at every walk of life and career English becomes an obstacle in their way of career.So,let us examine the reasons which make English as a souring grape for rural students even today in this modern era.
