  3. 3. HOW TO HAVE AN EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION? You need not only words but also a combination of this set of skills: • Becoming an engaged listener • Paying attention to nonverbal signals • Keeping stress in check • Asserting yourself (Robinson, Segal, & Smith, 2015)
  4. 4. On Listening Skills – to understand the message and to give the message a meaning as close as possible to what the sender means. (a) vocabulary (b) concentration (c) memory – to provide someone a shoulder to cry on. Listening sympathetically to somebody. This can help improve relationships between people. (a) vocabulary (b) supporting (c) empathizing – listening for enjoyment. (a) presentation (b) perception (c) previous experience
  5. 5. On Listening Skills – involves skillful criticism for judgment of financial, emotional, intellectual, physical and spiritual needs. (a) ethos- expertness and trustworthiness (b) logos- well-supported arguments (c) pathos- emotional elements – most important and basic to the other listening skills. It involves the ability to sense subtle changes in the speaker’s voice quality. Responses (uh-huh, well), pauses, verbal and nonverbal cues.
  6. 6. Identify the type of listening expounded in the following situations or scenarios: a. A student watching a debate on television b. A judge giving remarks to contestants of an extemporaneous-speaking contest c. A guidance counselor listening to a student share about his family problems d. A teenager listening to an upbeat song on his cell phone while travelling on his way home e. A security guard giving you your directions to the personnel manager.

A mother listening to her child talk about problems in school h. A lady watching her favorite singer perform in a concert i. An English instructor listening to students delver their memorized speech. j. A salesman explaining to you why his television set is the best among all brands.
