  6. 6. WHAT IS STRESS ? Starting point for Stress is External Condition and Stress is the reaction of the mind to that situation to prepare for combating it by – FLIGHT or FIGHT

  9. 9. WHAT IS THE EFFECT OF STRESS ? Relation Between Stress and Performance However beyond a point, the stress starts causing bad effects on body. It is Called DISTRESS. It is undesired and can result into physical problems – PSYCHOSOMATIC DISORDERS

How Stress results into PSYCHOMATIC DISORDER ? <ul><li>Let us think of a Fire in this Hall… </li></ul><ul><li>What will be REACTION of everyone to that situation …… </li></ul><ul><li>EVERYONE would like to run out …….. </li></ul><ul><li>At that time the body requires and consumes much higher energy than normal. Where from it comes ? </li></ul>
  11. 11. 1 st Feb 09 Avinash EFFECT OF STRESS - Mind plays very important role in reacting to the out side influence. Out side situation first affects the HYPOTHALUMUS – the centre of emotions. Which in turn activates the PITUATARY GLAND. The secretions from Pituatory Gland controls all other INDOCRINE GLANDS and they start working at much higher outputs than normal.

  17. 17. 1 st Feb 09 Avinash EFFECT OF STRESS – For Example DIABETES Stress plays a major role in Diabetes by triggering cortisol which dumps glucose into the blood for fight/ flight situations. If the high glucose in blood is not used or the situations repeats very often then blood sugar level and insulin requirements continually rise. . It results in……………….. DIABETES
  18. 18. 1 st Feb 09 Avinash EFFECT OF STRESS – Diabetes Medical Treatment - Diet – Restrain fat part, moderate carbohydrate & increase protein part. Indian diet contains 65-70% of carbohydrates. Must be reduced to less than 50% & increase the protein, Increase Fiber contents, Avoid low saturated fats –dalda etc.   Exercise - Lose weight , Walking, jogging, swimming, cycling etc.   Medicines - Oral tables – Insulin secretion – sulphonylureas, Reducing Insulin Resistance- Melformin   Insulin Injections – plain, Mixed, analogues.

  20. 20. 1 st Feb 09 Avinash Limitations of Medical Treatment in treating Psychosomatic Disorders <ul><li>Treats the symptoms and not the root cause of the problem </li></ul><ul><li>Works at physical level only where as the problem is at mental level </li></ul><ul><li>Effectiveness of medicines decreases with time and the situation aggravates </li></ul><ul><li>Side effects are strong and in long run cause more problems than cure </li></ul><ul><li>Many expensive tests for diagnosis </li></ul><ul><li>Expensive treatments </li></ul>
