Beginning in Vashi in the Kolhapur District of Maharastra where 60,000 children live in extreme poverty, GWEI raised funds and with the support of the Mahatma Gandhi Foundation purchased five acres of land with the intention of building the first Gandhi Center for Learning. With the significant assistance of a local architecture firm, Amarja Nimbalkar & Associates, the Gandhi Worldwide Education Institute has initiated a phased development of the Gandhi Center for Learning – Kolhapur Site in order to care for up to 200 children.

The Gandhi Worldwide Education Institute (GWEI) has a vision: provide the imperiled children of India with a safe place where they will be housed and fed while they receive training to prepare them for a life outside the prison of poverty. The building forms and designated locations will create a sense of security and shelter. Building materials are quarried and harvested from the site itself. Our design carves the buildings to blend with nature to create salubrious ambiences. The site is by in large independent of electricity and fossil fuels.
