Just Who is This Jesus?

  1. 1. WHY DOES THIS MATTER? 1. If you toy with the person of Christ, you run the risk of idolatry - worshipping a God in your image. 2. If you toy with the person of Christ, you run the risk of toying with the work of Christ. (more on that in the course of the lesson)
  3. 3. THE JEHOVAH’S WITNESSES A. "The true Scriptures speak of God's Son, the Word, as "a god". He is a 'mighty God' but not the Almighty God who is Jehovah" (The Truth Shall Make You Free, p47) B. "In other words, he was the first and direct creation of Jehovah God" (The Kingdom is At Hand, 46-47, 49)
  4. 4. THE JEHOVAH’S WITNESSES C. "The Bible shows that there is only one God...greater than His Son...and that the Son, as the Firstborn, Only-begotten, and 'the creation by God', had a beginning. That the Father is greater and older than the Son is reasonable, easy to understand and is what the Bible teaches" (From Paradise Lost to Paradise Regained, 164)
  5. 5. THE JEHOVAH’S WITNESSES D. "Thus Jesus had an existence in heaven before coming to the earth. But was it as one of the persons in an almighty, eternal triune Godhead? NO, for the Bible plainly states that in his prehuman existence, Jesus was a created spirit being just as angels were spirit beings created by God. Neither the angels nor Jesus had existed before their creation" (Should You Believe in the Trinity?)
  7. 7. THE MORMONS A. Elohim is literally the Father of the spirit of Jesus Christ and also of the body in which Jesus Christ performed His mission in the flesh..." (First Presidency and Council of the Twelve, 1916, "God the Father," compiled by Gordon Allred, p. 150)
  8. 8. THE MORMONS B. Jesus was the product of a physical relationship between the Father and the then-Virgin Mary - not the product of the Holy Spirit: "When the Virgin Mary conceived the child Jesus, the Father had begotten him in his own likeness. He was not begotten by the Holy Ghost. And who was the Father?...
  9. 9. THE MORMONS …He is the first of the human family; and when he took a tabernacle [body], it was begotten by his Father in heaven, after the same manner as the tabernacles of Cain, Abel and the rest of the sons and daughters of Adam and Eve...Jesus, our elder brother, was begotten in the flesh by the same character that was in the Garden of Eden, and who is our Father in Heaven (Journal of Discourses, 1:50- 51)
  10. 10. ISLAM
  11. 11. ISLAM A. Jesus is one of the many prophets of Allah: Surah 4:171: O People of the Scripture, do not commit excess in your religion or say about Allah except the truth. The Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary, was but a messenger of Allah and His word which He directed to Mary and a soul [created at a command] from Him. So believe in Allah and His messengers…
  12. 12. ISLAM … And do not say, "Three"; desist - it is better for you. Indeed, Allah is but one God. Exalted is He above having a son. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. And sufficient is Allah as Disposer of affairs.
  13. 13. ISLAM A. Jesus is one of the many prophets of Allah:  Surah 43:59: Jesus was not but a servant upon whom We bestowed favor, and We made him an example for the Children of Israel.
  14. 14. ISLAM B. Jesus Christ did not atone for anyone's sins - he didn't die, fullstop: Surah 4:157: And [for] their saying, "Indeed, we have killed the Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary, the messenger of Allah ." And they did not kill him, nor did they crucify him; but [another] was made to resemble him to them. And indeed, those who differ over it are in doubt about it. They have no knowledge of it except the following of assumption. And they did not kill him, for certain.
  15. 15. APOLLINARIANISM  Jesus had a human body but not a human mind or spirit  His mind and spirit were from the divine nature of the Son of God
  16. 16. EUTCHYIANISM  Jesus did not have two natures in one person - which we'll come to next week  No, Jesus had a super- nature - a little human and a lot of divine
  17. 17. NESTORIANISM  Jesus was not one person with two natures  Jesus' two natures were so separate that you can say two personalities were at work
  18. 18. WHERE WE’RE HEADED….  Introduction  Jesus…in His Own Words  The Humanity of Christ  The Deity of Christ  Christ the Saviour  The Return of Christ and Concluding Thoughts
