The saint Lawrence seaway is world’s longest deep-
draft inland waterway.
It is a system of locks, canals and channels that
permits ocean going vessels to travel from Atlantic to
the western most end of Great Lakes called lake
Country- United States of America and Canada.
Extension- Montreal (Quebec, Canada) to lake Erie
(smallest volume lake of the Five Great Lakes).
It also includes the WELLAND CANAL (CANADA).
Named after the SAINT LAWRENCE RIVER (Flows
from lake Ontario to Atlantic) .
The channels are maintained at 8.2m (27 ft).
Six locks are located in the St. Lawrence river portion
and Eight locks are located in the Welland canal
portion of the seaway.
The size of vessels that can traverse the seaway is
limited by the size of locks.
The maximum size of a vessel which can traverse the
seaway is :
Length:- 740 ft(225.5 m)
Beam:- 78 ft(23.7m)
Draft:- 26.5 ft(8.08m)
These are formally called Seawaymax.
The seaway is jointly managed by SAINT LAWRENCE
SEAWAY MANAGEMENT CORPORATION of USA &
SAINT LAWRENCE SEAWAY MANAGEMENT
CORPORATION of CANADA.
Currently used for shipping bulk cargo.
Possibility for use of large scale container ships is
