Åland presently receives its powerthrough an alternating current (AC) cablefrom Sweden and local renewable sources.The existing fossil-fueled power generationbackup facility will be closed down oncethe new link is in operation. The HVDCLight® link will enhance the contributionof renewables to the grid and help Finlandreach its emission reduction targets. The HVDC system incorporates specialfeatures such as active AC voltage support,providing greater network stability andthe unique ‘black-start’ capability, whichWe won orders worth $160 million fromJurong Shipyard Private Limited for thedesign, supply, supervision of installation,testing and commissioning of the mainelectrical systems for seven next-generationdrill ships that will be used to drill wells inthe enormous offshore pre-salt fields offthe southeast coast of Brazil. ABB’s integrated electrical packagewill provide reliable power supply tosubsystems onboard ships, helpingoperators maximize their energy efficiency.These vessels are the first in a series ofhigh-efficiency drill ships designed forultra-deepwater operations.   6. 6. 6 contact 1|13Grid reliabilitySmartelectricityThe complex challenges of deliveringthe growing demand for power, as wellas providing a stable and sustainablesupply of electricity is driving theevolution of smart grid technologies.There is hardly any process inindustry or any application in lifethat does not use electricity, somuch so, we take reliable powerfor granted. The demand for electricity isgrowing faster than any other form of energy– most notably in rapidly industrializingcountries, such as China and India, andeven momentary power disruptions causehuge economic losses. A sobering fact today is that coalfuels more than 40 percent of the world’selectric supply. To increase generationand at the same time, lower environmentalimpact, new solutions are needed alongthe electrical value chain. Transmission,distribution and consumption of electricalenergy must become more efficient. As itstands, inefficiencies along the whole valuechain lead to around 80 percent losses –from primary energy sources to the usefulconsumption of electricity. Although renewable energy generationis growing fast, the proportion in theoverall energy mix is still quite small andposes additional challenges: not least –availability, highlighting the need for efficientand reliable energy storage systems tocoordinate available sources of power. Tointegrate the growing amount of renewableenergy generation, and at the same timesignificantly improve efficiency along thevalue chain, requires massive changes inthe whole electrical system, in the way itshould be structured and operated.Smart Grids The future electrical system (or smartgrid), must be designed to meet four majorrequirements across the globe:– Capacity– Reliability– Efficiency– SustainabilityTo cope with what the International EnergyAgency foresees as the addition of 1 GWpower plant and related grid infrastructureevery week for the next 20 years, the futureelectric system must handle the capacityincrease in an economic way. The larger the amount of electricitytransported the closer the system willoperate to its stability limit. Yet blackoutsor even smaller disturbances are becomingincreasingly unacceptable. A 2005 Berkleylab study reported that unreliable electricalsystems cost the US $80 billion annually.If an electrical system can safely handleFACTS solutions for improved grid reliability
  7. 7. 7contact 1|13Grid reliabilityand stabilize grid disturbances, then thatsystem will require fewer generating plantsavailable in reserve. This means loweremissions. Projections by the International EnergyAgency show that using energy moreefficiently has a greater potential to curbCO2emissions over the next 20 years thanall the other options put together. The reluctance to invest in energyefficiency is surprising. Investmentscan usually be recouped through lowerenergy costs in less than two years, andunder other circumstances, businesseswould normally leap at such prospectsof rapid returns. A major obstacle is alack of knowledge in private households,companies, or public authorities concerningenergy-efficient equipment. This challengeis further compounded by the variety ofavailable options. Another obstacle is a lack of incentives.Why should a landlord invest in energyefficiency if the tenant will reap the benefits?Why should a purchasing manager spendmore of his budget on efficient equipmentif the savings all go to the department thatpays the electricity? Efficient and reliable energy-efficientsolutions are rarely replicable. Variable-A smart grid is an evolving networkof new technologies, equipment, andcontrols that work together to respondimmediately to our 21stcenturydemand for reliable, efficient andsustainable electricity.
  8. 8. 8 contact 1|13Grid reliabilityPower electronics help grids evolve into moreintelligent and environmentally friendly networksspeed drives, which raise the efficiency ofelectric motors, sit in plain metal boxes,belying the fact that their energy savingpotential is many times greater than themuch touted compact fluorescent lightbulb. The drive systems installed by ABBalone save as much as 170 million metrictons of CO2every year globally. Thiscorresponds to 20 percent of all emissionsin Germany. The European Union took an importantstep in June 2009 when it set efficiencystandards for most of the electric motorsused in industrial applications. The movewas barely noticed, yet it is expected tosave 135 billion kilowatt-hours per yearby 2020. That is three times more thanthe savings expected from phasing outincandescent light bulbs in the Europeanregion and equals more than Sweden’stotal electric power consumption (whichin 2007 amounted to 132 billion kWh).Sustainability Generating electricity with solar,wind, wave or geothermal energy iswithout doubt a powerful way to avoidCO2emissions. There is hope that withimproving technology, better conversionefficiency and lower production costs, thecontribution of such sources to the futureenergy mix will increase. Hydropower is the traditional CO2-freesource of electrical energy and accordingto the IEA this will continue to be the casefor the next 20 years. Generating electricityin this way is one task; the other equallyimportant requirement is to connect it tothe electrical grid. Huge distances haveto be bridged to carry electrical powerfrom hydropower plants to the centers ofconsumption. In China, for example, bulkpower is being transported more than2,000 km with low transmission losses. Intermittent wind-power generators poseanother challenge to grid stability and theneed for additional reserves, but adequatetechnology is also required to connectthem from remote places far offshore. Efficient and reliable energy storage willultimately help to overcome the issues ofintermittency and HVDC cable technologyis the way to cross the sea. The final influence, however, is the endconsumer who decides how much and inwhich way he wants to consume energy.At the present energy costs and in viewof the difference between high and lowtariffs, the incentives to save energy oruse it at times of lower cost are limited. Technology could provide greatertransparency regarding consumption atany moment in time and its associated costto the consumer. The resulting demand/response relationship between generatorsand consumers makes a further contributionto the reduction of the required generatingreserve. ABB has the full portfolio of products,systems and services to further improve anddevelop the electrical system. Wide areacontrol systems, flexible AC transmissionsystems, substation control, HVDCsystems, cable connections, distributioncontrol and low-voltage systems addressthe grid. Drive systems, efficient devicesand a broad application of process controltechnologies help to increase the efficiencyin industrial and commercial applications.Building automation and control is anotherarea with energy saving potential servedby us. Whatever ittakes to make this happen is what wemean by grid reliability. Redundancyis designed into a transmission gridto handle outages through parallelpaths, the design criteria – n-1 meansthe grid can withstand loss of onetransmission line of a certain powerrating.What are the key elements that canfacilitate grid reliability?The most important factor isthe generation mix. Integratingintermittent power from renewablesincreases the risk of destabilizing thegrid. Depending on the percentageof renewables, it is much morecomplicated now to plan powergeneration and indirectly, gridreliability.Another crucial element is thetransmission network capacity. InIndia there is an increasing demandfor high-voltage direct current (HVDC)lines for transmission of bulk powerover long distances with fewerconversion and transmission losses.What are blackouts and how arethey connected to grid reliability?Blackouts can be caused by ashort circuit, damage to transmissionlines or by overloading the electricitymains. Quite often they happen whenImportance ofreliability in gridoperationsInterviewthere is a miscommunication betweencontrol centers.To prevent blackouts,functionalities have been addedto strengthen the traditional grid.Substation automation and protectionsystems safeguard human lifeand machines, allowing operatorsto remotely control and monitorswitching for an entire region. InKarnataka alone, our systems monitorand control 1,317 main transmissionand distribution substations spreadacross the state.What does ABB have to offer tohelp enhance grid reliability?Everything – except powergeneration equipment. ABB hasseveral solutions from productionplanning software to addingtransmission capacity through flexiblealternating current transmissionsystems (FACTS). In India, FACTScan help stabilize the grid, reducelosses in long AC lines and filter outdisturbances.Could you shed some light onthis area from a broader regionperspective?There is a lot of interest in solarin Africa, the Middle East and India.The hot climate is a better fit as peakhours coincide with peak generation,simplifying the addition of renewablesto the grid.Even so, every time generationClaes Rytoft, head of technology for thePower Systems division of ABB tells us howtechnology can prevent blackouts and createreliable energy networks.capacity is added, there are someproblems with transmission capacity.The focus on solar has addedcomplexity to keeping grids stable.Energy storage, still at the pilot projectstage, is complicated and expensiveand not an option in the short term.When commercially viable energystorage technology is developed, itwill change the way grids are built.Could you tell us about some of thelatest technology advances in thisarea? ABB’s hybrid HVDC breaker comesright at the top. The ability to interruptdirect current makes it possible to joinHVDC transmission lines to form aresilient power grid that could providean efficient way to transmit powerfrom widely distributed sources ofrenewable energy.Our Ventyx Network Manager SCADA/EMS is a key component for poweringsmart grids, enabling power utilities tocontrol and manage complex energysystems, reduce operation costs andensure cyber security.Smart meters allow real-time usagemonitoring through new wireless,digital technology that anchors next-generation grids. But, so far there hasbeen no broad-scale to operate energy markets is inuse in many locations worldwide.   10. 10. 10 contact 1|13Grid reliabilityMaking of a metropolitanpower gridThe energy-efficient solutionusing ABBs FACTS technologyenables Texas-based electricutility, Oncor, to increase thecapacity, secure the reliability and improvethe energy efficiency of its power networkin north Texas and the Dallas-Fort Worthmetropolitan area. Oncor is the largest power transmissionand distribution company in Texas, servingsome three million homes and businesses,including most of Dallas-Fort Worth, thefourth largest metropolitan area in theUnited States with a combined populationof 6.5 million. The solution has also earned Oncor thestate’s highest award for environmentalexcellence from the Texas Commissionon Environmental Quality. According to the commission, whichmade the award in April 2010, the solutioneliminates the need to generate anestimated 563 hours of peak-load electricityand saves almost one million megawatt-hours of energy and associated greenhousegas emissions a year. The solution encompasses the world’slargest and fastest-acting concentrationof static var compensators (SVC), whichreact in just 20 milliseconds whenevervoltage fluctuations threaten to destabilizethe grid. Voltage fluctuations are usually causedby increased demand for electricity duringpeak periods. But in Dallas-Fort Worth,other long-term stress factors are alsoinvolved: consistent year-on-year growthin demand, the recent retirement of severallocal power plants, and the increasingamount of wind power and remote powergeneration in the Texas energy mix.Integrating renewable energy The SVCs enable Oncor to integraterenewable energy and reduce itsdependence on locally generated fossil-fueled power, thereby reducing greenhousegas emissions and improving theenvironment in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. The SVCs have been operating at theAn award-winning ABB solution is helping a US power company save almost onemillion megawatt-hours of energy and associated CO2emissions a year.Parkdale substation in Dallas since June2009. SVCs are part of ABB’s family offlexible AC transmission systems (FACTS),solutions that increase the capacity ofexisting transmission networks by as muchas 50 percent, while at the same timeimproving their reliability. We delivered the Parkdale solutionin the record and unrivaled time of just14 months.   11. 11. 11contact 1|13Grid reliabilityThe Reliance Energy (erstwhileBombay Suburban Electric Supply,or BSES) power distributionnetwork with two 250 megawatt(MW) generating stations in the coastalcity of Dahanu is spread across westernMumbai, stretching from Ghodbunder inthe east to Borivali in the west. This systemis connected to two different utility grids:Maharashtra State Electricity TransmissionCompany Limited (MSETCL) and TATAPower, for importing the extra powerrequired in their distribution network.The challenge The generation, load data and networkstatus available from the substationautomation system (ABB’s SCS-200 system) installed earlier at eachsubstation and locally used for controland monitoring, provided very slow-speedcommunication networks, using powerline carrier communication (PLCC) links.Providing rapid indication of islanding forchange of mode in operations, within thecritical clearing time of the system, was achallenge for generating units at Dahanu.It was also imperative to prevent trippingduring isolation and for stable operation ofthe entire 220 kV electrical network duringgrid disturbances.The solution In 2006, the local substation automationsystems for 220 and 33 kilovolt (kV)substations were upgraded with ABB’s800xA technology with AC800M controllers,S800 IO modules, and a communicationnetwork using Fox series equipmentand new SCADA system for RelianceEnergy’s entire distribution network withABB’s Network Manager Technology. Thegeneration and load data from individualsubstations were made available to thecentralized islanding and load sheddingsystem using fast communication networkReliable grid solutionssupported with 61850 technologies. Aarey,one of the main central transmission anddistribution stations, was identified forthe centralized control and monitoring ofthe entire transmission and distributionnetwork.Results Our installed solution now providesfast detection of the system islanded andtie line connections for change of modeof operation for the units at Dahanu, andsubsequent fast load shedding of non-critical feeders across the distributionnetwork, as required while islanding. Theload shedding systems delivered by us,support priority setting options for tripping33 kV load feeders, as desired by theoperator. Besides, ABB is also upgrading theNetwork Management system to includeupdated technologies and many of thenew 220 kV, 33 kV substation automationsystems for the substations at Saki, Goraiand Goregaon in the existing system.   12. 12. 12 contact 1|13Grid reliabilityCaprivi Link InterconnectorThe Namibian transmission systemoperator, NamPower, chose theHVDC Light (high-voltage directcurrent) system to electricallyconnect the northeastern part of thecountry to central Namibia, a distance of950 kilometers. ABB was contracted tobuild the 350 kilovolt (kV), 300 megawatt(MW) transmission link between Zambezi,close to the Zambian border in the regionof Caprivi, and Gerus in the central partof the country. HVDC Light technologyhelps to stabilize the two weak networks. The high voltage transmission system,providing a new route for power imports,was officially inaugurated by NamibiasPresident, His Excellency HifikepunyePohamba. The HVDC Light system ispart of a greater scheme that includes a950 kilometer-long DC overhead line, anupgrade of an existing AC overhead linefrom Gerus to Auas to 400 kV, the extensionof the Gerus and Auas substations, and anew AC substation in Zambezi. The Caprivi Link Interconnector,connecting electricity grids in Namibiaand Zambia, ensures reliable power transfercapability between the east and west ofthe Southern African Power Pool (SAPP).It is also the first electrical connectionbetween the Caprivi region of Namibiaand the rest of the country, and is ableto supply power to the region if normalsupplies from Zambia are disrupted. Evenlarger islanded parts of the Namibian andZambian grids can be supplied by the DClink, which maintains frequency controland thereby avoids power outages. We were responsible for systemengineering, including design, supply andinstallation of the two converter stationsand earth electrodes. ABB’s innovative andenvironmentally friendly HVDC Light is ahigh-voltage direct current transmissiontechnology that is capable of stabilizingweak electricity networks by means ofpowerful voltage control. The design alsoallows for a bi-pole extension to 600 MW.“The new Caprivi Link Interconnector willsecure power supplies, strengthen gridreliability and facilitate power trading inthe region,” said Martin Gross, head ofABBs Grid Systems business. “Our HVDCLight technology is ideally suited to enablethe efficient transmission of electricity andintegrate clean renewable energies likeA 350 kV HVDC Light®system stabilizes two weak networks in Namibia andenables power trading in the expansive region of southern Africa.hydro power.” "The Caprivi Link Interconnector,connecting electricity grids in Namibiaand Zambia will ensure reliable powertransfer capability between the east andwest of the Southern African Power Pool(SAPP)," said NamPower’s marketingand communications officer, TangeniKambangula. Asa turnkey engineering, procurementand construction (EPC) partner withHyundai Engineering and ConstructionCompany, Korea, ABB in Singaporebagged the biggest project in the historyof Bangladesh electricity companies. The project focuses on revamping andupgrading technology and adding capacityto the existing power plant at Haripur andthe connected grid. Out of the entire scopeof supply, ABB in India will supply one 570MVA generator transformer and two 120MVA power transformers. This one of a kind transformer isdesigned to evacuate power from boththe steam and gas turbine generatorssimultaneously. The transformer with two low voltage(LV) windings (370 MVA at 19 kV and 200MVA at 13.8 kV) will be fed power fromthe gas and steam turbine generatorsstepped up to 132 kilovolt (kV) feedinginto the national grid and supplying powerto Dhaka, Chittagong and other suburbancities in Bangladesh. It is provided withan on-load tap-changer for varying highvoltage (HV)by 25 percent for controllingpower flow while handling a current of3,000 amperes. An oil-directed forcedair cooling (ODAF) system has beenadapted, using radiators with axial flowoil pumps and propeller fans to dissipateheat resulting from the power loss of morethan 2 MW inside the transformer. The total weight of the fully assembledtransformer is a staggering 420 tonnes.This consignment will have a length of 11.7meters and a height and depth of 4.3 x 4.2meters. The transformer was transportedby special hydraulic road trailer from thefactory to Dahej Port and shipped fromthere to Mongla Port in Bangladesh. Forthe final stage of the journey, it was takendown Sitalakhya River by barge to Haripurpower station. The new power infrastructure willsupport the first phase of the new Formosasteel complex, being constructed some400 kilometers south-east of Hanoi inthe Vung Ang Economic Zone, HàTinhprovince in central Vietnam. The complex,spanning 3,300 hectares will house foursteel furnaces with a combined outputof over 15 million tons a year, a 1,600megawatt thermal power station and theSon Duong deepwater port with an annualthroughput of 30 million tons.
