India has declared a five day state
mourning as a mark of respect to antiapartheid icon Nelson Mandela. During
the mourning, the national flag will be
flown at half mast from
6th to 10th December
throughout the country
and there will be no official entertainment. A
decision to this effect
was taken at a special
Cabinet meeting in New
Delhi today. Mandela died at his home
in Johannesburg in South Africa Thursday night. He was 95. He was hospitalized in June this year with a recurring
lung infection. Mandela led South Africa's
transition from white-minority rule in the
1990s, after 27 years in prison.

Exit polls point to Congress rout in four states
NEW DELHI (Goodday News Network) The Congress faces a blank-out in four
states that have polled in assembly elections in November-December, while the BJP
will certainly win in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, is likely to retain Chhattisgarh
and may grab power in Delhi as well, according to exit polls and post-poll surveys .
If these polls prove to be accurate, it is very bad news for the Congress Equally, it is
a bumper booster shot in the BJP's arm and its prime ministerial candidate Narendra
Modi. While there were only minor differences among the different polls on Rajasthan,
MP and Chhattisgarh, the estimates for Delhi varied widely, with two of the four
polls predicting a hung assembly, but two others giving the BJP a clear though slim
majority. One poll even suggested that debutant Aam Aadmi Party would emerge as
the single largest party in the new assembly. On Delhi - the election will be
most closely watched as a pointer to the national mood - On Madhya
Pradesh, there is unanimity that Shivraj Singh Chouhan will win a third
term in style. The range of predicted tallies for the BJP in the 230-member is
from a minimum of 128 in the C-Voter poll to a maximum of 161 in the poll
done by Today's Chanakya. The Congress tally in the state, if the polls are
right, could be anywhere between 62 and 92. Rajasthan too is projected to
deliver a landslide verdict in favour of the BJP, with its tally projected at
110-147 seats in the 200-member assembly across four different surveys
and the Congress predicted to win at best 62 seats and at worst 39.
Anticipatory bail not to be
given to accused absconder
In a significant ruling, the Supreme Court
Friday held that anticipatory bail should be
not given to an accused who has been declared as an absconder and not cooperated
with the investigation. A bench of Chief Justice P Sathasivam and Justice Ranjan Gogoi
said that court's power to
grant anticipatory bail be
exercised only in exceptional cases where it appears that the person may
be falsely implicated. If
anyone is declared as an absconder/pro-
claimed offender in terms of Section 82
of the Criminal Procedure Code, he is not
entitled to the relief of anticipatory bail,"
the bench said. The bench also set aside
the order of the Madhya Pradesh High
Court which had granted bail to two accused who had absconded from the very
date when they had allegedly poisoned a
man to death.
Communal Violence Bill not a vote-catching gimmick:pm Indian Mars Orbiter out of earth's influence
Faced with stiff opposition from BJP and some non-Congress
parties over the Communal Violence Bill, PM Manmohan Singh
rejected the charge that it was a vote-catching gimmick and said
it was time to control aberrations like the
Muzaffarnagar riots. "It is not a vote-catching
gimmick.....What happened in Muzaffarnagar and
some other parts of our country is a reminder that
although as a country, we can take pride in our
ability to protect all the people of our country, yet
there are times when aberrations take place. "This
bill, if it is passed by Parliament, will help to control those aberrations," the Prime Minister said
replying to a question at the Hindustan Times
Leadership Summit in New Delhi on Friday. Singh
noted that in the last five or six years, the country
has been grappling with the problem of communal riots in some parts of the country. "And our
effort has been to create an environment where
officers would have the responsibility to look after the law and order situation as effectively as is
humanly possible. "Plus also if riots cannot be prevented, there
should be adequate compensation for the victims of the riots.
These are two basic principles, which underlines what is the
purpose of the Communal Violence Bill. I think it is a bill, whose
time has come," the Prime Minister said. His remarks came amid
Centre's move to drop several provisions to ensure that the legislation is neutral between communities. Singh had on Thursday
said that government will try to evolve a broad-based consensus
on issues which are of great legislative importance. BJP's Prime
Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi had on Thursday dubbed
the bill as a "recipe for disaster". Union Home Minister
Sushilkumar Shinde had said the government will
bring the 'Prevention of Communal and Targeted
Violence (Access to Justice and Reparations)
Bill, 2013 in the Winter Session of Parliament.
Government sources said the fresh initiative to
amend the provisions of the draft Bill has been
taken in the wake of criticism by BJP, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Tamil
Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa. The draft
bill is now made neutral between all groups or
communities and the Central government will
not have any perceived overriding powers anywhere. The earlier version of bill specifically
mentioned that the onus of riots lay on the
majority community. The fresh draft says, "If
the state government is of the opinion that assistance of the Central government is required
for controlling communal violence, it may seek the assistance
of the Central government to deploy armed forces of the Union
for such purposes.. "Earlier, the Centre was given unilateral
powers to send central paramilitary forces during the outbreak
of communal violence without consulting the state government. BJP has maintained it will oppose the legislation when it
comes up for discussion in Parliament on the ground that it
would be a "threat to India's communal harmony."

The Indian Orbiter to Mars
zoomed out of the earth's
sphere of influence on
Wednesday while cruising in
the sun orbit on its 10-month
long voyage to the red planet.
"The Mars Orbiter has traversed beyond the earth's
sphere of influence, which extends up to 925,000 km in the
interplanetary space at 1.14
a.m.," the Indian space agency
said in a posting on its
Facebook account.
Exiting from the earth's
sphere of influence means the
spacecraft is out of its gravitational pull and free to cruise in
the 680-million km solar orbit
to reach Mars in mid-September 2014.

got Rs. 1.20 cr package during the
ongoing placement drive. The drive
was started on Sunday and it
would continue till December 22,
the IIT sources said. Two students
have got the highest package of
Rs. 1.20 crore per annum from IT
giant Oracle. While 76 others got
a package between Rs. 8 lakh to
24 lakhs per annum from different
companies, they added. Around 50
companies
have
already
participated in the placement
process, IIT Kanpur placement
cell chairman Vimal Kumar said,
adding that 200 more companies
are expected to come. Kumar,
however, refused to provide
details of the salary packages being

The Supreme Court has favoured punishment of life imprisonment to
people indulging in production and marketing of adulterated milk and
asked the state governments to make amendment in laws. A bench of
Justices K S Radhakrishnan and A K Sikri on Thursday said punishment
of six months jail term mentioned in Food Safety Act is grossly inadequate
and asked states to amend the law as has been done by the Uttar Pradesh,
West Bengal and Odisha. The bench was hearing Public-Interest
Litigations seeking its direction to state governments to stop practice of
milk adulteration which is rampant in various states.
Advocate Anurag Tomar, appearing for the petitioners, contended
that milk contaminated with synthetic material is being sold in various
states particularly in northern states posing serious threat to the life and
health of the consumers.
He submitted that samples collected by the Food Safety and Standards
Authority of India in 2011 revealed large-scale sale of adulterated milk
across the country. The bench, after hearing his submission, asked the
states to make punishment harsher for such offence and sought response
from the states on what action they are taking to control and eliminate the
menace of adulterated milk in the country. It posted the case for further
hearing on 13th January.
