Scientists have developed a gel that helps brains recover from traumatic injuries. It has the potential to
treat head injuries suffered in combat, car accidents, falls, or gunshot wounds. Developed by Dr. Ning
Zhang at Clemson University in South Carolina, the gel is injected in liquid form at the site of injury
and stimulates the growth of stem cells there.
Brain injuries are particularly hard to repair, since injured tissues swell up and can cause additional
damage to the cells. So far, treatments have tried to limit this secondary damage by lowering the
temperature or relieving the pressure at the site of injury. However, these techniques are often not very
effective.
More recently, scientists have considered transplanting donor brain cells into the wound to repair
damaged tissue. This method has so far had limited results when treating brain injuries. The donor cells
often fail to grow or stimulate repair at the injury site, possibly because of the inflammation and
scarring present there. The injury site also typically has very limited blood supply and connective
tissue, which might prevent donor cells from getting the nutrients they require.
Dr. Zhang's gel, however, can be loaded with different chemicals to stimulate various biological
processes at the site of injury. In previous research done on rats, she was able to use the gel to help re-establish
full blood supply at the site of brain injury. This could help create a better environment for
donor cells.
In a follow-up study, Dr. Zhang loaded the gel with immature stem cells, as well as the chemicals they
needed to develop into full-fledged adult brain cells. When rats with severe brain injuries were treated
with this mixture for eight weeks, they showed signs of significant recovery.
The new gel could treat patients at varying stages following injury, and is expected to be ready for
testing in humans in about three years.

The time was coming near. I knew that he was getting older. Duke had been there when my parents
brought me home for the first time. We grew up together. He had become one of my best friends. I still
miss him. He was the best dog we had ever had.
He had slick, brown and black hair, his paws and chest white. With a slouching posture he would walk
around like a silent lamb barking only when we came home or he wanted outside. Although very quiet,
he knew how to comfort and love. In his prime he enjoyed hanging out, but as he withered he was not
always up for it.
Catch was Duke’s favorite game. If you let him outside with you he would stay where you could see
him. Every once and awhile he would get a little curious and would go explore being sure to never be
gone too long.
My family began to do more of the comforting since he did not do much but sleep anymore. Even
though he was getting old and it did not seem like he was giving much to the family, he did, he still
brought joy. When you have known someone your whole life and you care about them just seeing them
makes you happy.
Then it came. One night we were watching T.V. when Duke tried to get up off the couch. While getting
up he lost his balance and flopped of the couch, it was a sad sight to see. As he tried to get up we could
see he was in pain. When he walked he had a limp in his back leg. Trying to climb back onto the couch
he struggled. Finally giving up, he hobbled to a chair that was not so high off the ground and sat down.
The night became a gloomy one. I got up to go sit by him and just pet him. We had a strong feeling that
he had broken his hip.
“We are probably going to have to put him down,” my mom said as I got up for school the next
morning.
“I figured you were going to say that,” I told my mom wishing it was not true.
3. That entire morning sucked as I tried to push through it and get ready for school. When it was time to
leave I sat there and hugged him forever. I scratched the top of his head behind his right ear, which I
knew was his favorite place for a good scratch. He lightly leaned into my hand. Tears began to well in
my eyes as the knowing I was never going to see him again hit me full force.

The government has just published a report which suggest that television is partly responsible for the
serious increase in crime over the last ten years. The exposure of violence or pornography harmfully
effects on children.
Many people who are alive today know what it is like to live in a world without television. Television
as we know is only about forty years old. Yet it is so much a part of our lives that it seems as if it had
always existed.
Some people think that the years before the invention of television were a better time. They claim that
families talked more and did more things together. More books were read. People used their
imaginations more fully. People got more outdoor exercises.
But others disagree. They claim that television is a powerful educational tool. It informs us of what is
going on in the world, from a famine in Africa to a local politics and fashion. It helps us understand
how people live, work, and struggle.
In 1961, Newton Minow, a government official, called prime-time schedules “ a vast wasteland.”
Television is credited with being a great teacher, but it is also blamed for the poor reading and writing
skills of our population. Television gets praised for helping us understand the people of the world. But
it has been accused of helping to destroy family life. Television keeps us informed about the political
issues of the day.

In 1956 a Brazilian scientist imported some special bees into Brazil from Africa. The African bees were
the same size as ordinary bees. But they were much stronger and more dangerous. A sting from one of
these bees can kill a man of even a buffalo very quickly.
The scientist imported the bees because he wanted to breed a new type of bees using the African bees
and ordinary European bees. He wanted to combine the strength of the African bee with the safety of
the European bee. Unfortunately, in 1957, 26 queen bees escaped and began to breed in the jungles of
Brazil. They spread very quickly and since that time they have been moving slowly north- wards,
covering 300 to 400 kilometers a year. Over 200 people have died after being stung by the killer bees,
and thousands of animals have also died. By March 1978 the killer bees had reached Venezuela and in
1980 they arrived in Panama. If they continue to move at the same speed will reach the USA in 1988.
Today scientists from many different countries are trying to find ways of stopping the killer bees. But if

Have you ever wondered how people get chocolate from? In this article we’ll enter the amazing world
of chocolate so you can understand exactly what you’re eating.
Chocolate starts with a tree called the cacao tree. This tree grows in equatorial regions, especially in
places such as South America, Africa, and Indonesia. The cacao tree produces a fruit about the size of a
small pine apple. Inside the fruit are the tree’s seeds, also known as cocoa beans.
The beans are fermented for about a week, dried in the sun and then shipped to the chocolate maker.
The chocolate maker starts by roasting the beans to bring out the flavour. Different beans from different
places have different qualities and flavor, so they are often sorted and blended to produce a distinctive
mix. Next, the roasted beans are winnowed. Winnowing removes the meat nib of the cacao bean from
its shell. Then, the nibs are blended. The blended nibs are ground to make it a liquid. The liquid is
called chocolate liquor. It tastes bitter. All seeds contain some amount of fat, and cacao beans are not
different. However, cacao beans are half fat, which is why the ground nibs form liquid. It’s pure bitter
chocolate.

Education is often viewed as school in a traditional, formal sense. Many people believe that true
learning can only take place in a formal classroom setting. Others feel education occurs in many
different forms and environments. There may not be a definitive answer to the question of, 'What is
education?' However, we can start thinking about the purpose of education. Is it to educate youth to be
responsible citizens? Is it to develop individuals, as well as society, in order to ensure a society's
10. economic success? Or is it to simply focus on developing individual talents and intelligence? Perhaps it
is the balance of all three that defines education? While our answers may differ, we can perhaps agree
that education is a basic human right. When that right is granted growth and development, the society
as a whole is more likely to improve in areas such as health, nutrition, general income and living
standards and population fertility rates.
As global citizens it is our responsibility to critically think about the issues and attempt to come up
with solutions to the problems plaguing education. In 1990 UNESCO launched EFA, the movement
to provide quality education for all children, youth, and adults by the year 2015. The unfortunate
reality is that for many countries, larger issues some before improving the quality of education.
How can we achieve the goals of EFA when numerous countries around the world are faced with
challenges that seem far too impossible to overcome? The answer lies in attempting to bridge some
of the gaps that prevent developing nations to compete with developed nations. One example is that
of providing greater access to technology and narrowing the ever widening digital divide. In many
ways the most basic access to technology can serve as a valuable educational tool. Individuals who
are not afforded this access are at a disadvantage when trying to grasp opportunities to make life
better for themselves, their families, and their community.

Television has a great influence on our ideas about what is right and wrong about the way we should
behave, and about life in general. Sometimes the values and life styles that we get from television are in
conflict with those that are taught at home and at school. Critics of television point out that crime and
western programs often appeal to a taste of violence, while many games show appeal greed. Many
critics also believe that television should be used for socially constructive purposes as well as for
entertainment.
The first commercial television broadcast was made in April 20, 1939 by Radio Corporation of
America (RCA). Since 1939., it has become one of the most important facts or modern life. Television
