Birth of St. Maria De Mattias, Foundress, Adorers of the Blood of Christ
"Before I formed you in your mothers womb, I knew you.......before you were born, I set you apart...
In the midst of a world markedby tragedy…a life, after itspreparationFor a NEW LIFE inside itsmother’s womb, found its wayout into the word on February4,1805, in the mountainous andbarren soil of Vallecorsa, Italy.
A daughter to Ottavia De Angeles and Giovanni De Mattias and on that same day, a daughter to the Church as she was immediately baptized and named Maria Matilde De Mattias.
“How fortunateare we to havebeen Born in thebosom of theChurch.” Maria De Mattias
“All whom the Father calls and are baptized becomes disciples of Jesus.”
Through the lovingpresence of herFather, at the age of8, Maria’s heart wasdrawn to an ardentlove of Jesus…
…in the image of a Paschal Lamb who was led to death and given His Blood for the Salvation of the World.
Maria’s openness and docility to the Spirit who isJesus’ paschal gift, made her understand the Son’sinvitation to be His disciple. She gave her positiveresponse and lets herself be formed by Mary MostHoly, in the image of Our Lady Pregnant with theIncarnate Word which is soon to be Maria’s image.
Mary was with herwhen Jesus showedHimself to Maria as thecrucified one…that isat the height of Hissaving Mission forhumankind.
With her contemplationof the Mystery of theBlood, Maria wasimpregnated… feeling the life withinher womb, it paved theway for her vocation ofMotherhood.
As great men and women breaks in upon history like a flashof lightning, Maria appeared to her townsmen in Vallecorsain such a flash of lightning in the Months of late-1821 andearly 1822, she was 17 years of age.
Through the inspiration ofSt. Gaspar Del Bufalo( Founder of theMissionaries of the MostPrecious Blood) in thePopular Mission on 1822;the affirmation of DonTuribio Lenta,
and the Spiritual Guidanceof Don Giovanni Merlini;the people of Vallecorsabegan to realize that theyounger daughter of the DeMattias’ family was likely tobecome a Spiritual Eminent.
She began to act in a way thatthey did not understand, orderingher life according to standardsthat could have meaning only tothe totally committed Christians;she removed her vanities, andlived contradicting the ideals ofher time.
Maria De Mattias, likeMary after theAnnunciations and uponknowing the condition of hercousin Elizabeth, SET OUTIN A HURRY on a lifetimeof unconditional response toGod’s Love.
Prayer, silence, detachment, hope andlove to JesusCrucifiedaccompanied her inher pregnancy of theWill of the Father.
Carrying Jesus’ PaschalMystery in her womb made herone with Him. Seeing themisery, injustice and horror ofher society, the passion of“Bringing back the beautifulorder of things” was conceivedin her being.
On March 1,1834, justafter her 29th birthday,Maria began her laborpains of setting herself ourof Vallecorsa from herFather who tearfullyoffered her daughter toGod.
Her pains during the travel wereforetaste of the cost ofdiscipleship. Yet the power togive Birth is coming from withinthat made even the Bishopblessed her in awe, seeing in her aprophetic woman far beyond hertime.
Finally, reaching Acuto onMarch 4,1834, MariaGave Birth to theCongregation of theAdorers of the Blood ofChrist
…a Congregation that will collaborate with Christ in His work of Redemption. The name Maria given had it all. From then, she began her Spiritual Maternity
…a witness to God’s Love in her own life and led others to the knowledge and Love of Jesus Crucified.
Her motivation, hercharism and that of theInstitute would foreverreflects the PaschalMystery, the life, deathand resurrection ofJesus and findexpression in the life ofthe Adorer-Apostle.
The Adorers did not have as its goal a particular ministry. Rather it took itsinspiration from the Mystery of the Blood of Christ and sought to bring itspower to God’s people, especially women and girls. This example saw andexperienced by her daughters, the formation they received and the proposalof life ideal which they accepted and shared made of them “women who likeMaria are born to give birth themselves.” They themselves conceived in theirbeing the charism which God gave first to Maria herself. Eventually, theseeds sown in Acuto was scattered all over the world.
“We are asked to bring that beautiful orderof things thatthe great Son of God came to establish with His own Blood.”
To give an idea of the amazing, rapid development of the Adorer’s action, we need onlyto recall that in 1866, the year of Maria’s death, there were 66 places of ministryscattered all over Italy but also in Germany, US and England. Now there are almost2000 Adorers present in 27 countries all over the world.
