FOUND Novel Assignment Checkpoints Book by Margaret Peterson Haddix Report by Lindsey Dierig Core 2
I. Point of View              The book “Found” is a 3rd person omniscient narrative. I know this because of the narrator knows every characters thoughts, feelings and never uses words like I, we, or me. Quotes that support my theory are, “Jonah barely stopped himself before giving an answer that would have sounded like his dad: ‘Because the government is set up to serve the people.’ ”  As you can see from the following quote located on pg.141 the author knows that Jonah had thought about saying the following previously before he spoke. This would not have been known by the average observer. Another quote is “He stopped because he thought maybe he was quoting directly from What to Tell Your Adopted and Foster Children.” Page 33,line 16.          There not allowed to tell us what it is? Don’t you think he he book Found has a subjective point of view i know this because the author only shows the views of the main characters and their thoughts. For example “‘Let me get this strait,’ Mom said .‘You’re saying that the FBI had some connection to Jonah’s life before he joined our family - and he has no right to know?’” Page 79, line 22.
II. Character        Jonah Skidmore : Dynamic, Protagonist I know Jonah is a dynamic and protagonist character because as the story continues Jonah becomes more heroic and wants to be able to warn others about the dangers he has discovered. “I have to go back,” he yelled. “We can’t just leave Angela like that.” Page 181, line 6.    Katherine Skidmore : Round, ProtagonistI know Katherine is a round and protagonist character because she has character traits just like Jonah but is a little less involved in the story. I also know that Katherine is a protagonist character because 1. she is not evil and 2. She offers to help save her friends life as seen in point F in plot.
III. Parts of Story   A: Angela is a new employee for Sky Trails Airlines when she discovers a plane that appeared out of nowhere on the runway. “That plane,” Angela said. “At that gate 2B. I thought it -----” What was she supposed to say? Wasn’t there? Appeared out of thin air?”Page 3, line 16.    B: Angela decides to go on to the plane and discovers that there is no pilot and 36 babies in each seat, unattended. “Thirty-six seats on this plane , every single one of them was full. Each seat contained a baby.” Page10, line 21.    C: The setting travels 13 years into the future, to modern day where the exposition.    D: End of exposition, Jonah receives a letter that marks the beginning of the rising action. “The letter fluttered towards the threshold of the door, but Jonah had already read every single word. There were six: YOU ARE ONE OF THE MISSING.” Page19, line 25.       E: Jonah and the other thirty-four now captured “Missing” children are faced with a decision to leave there current families and either be sent back into the past to their original families or to be changed back into babies and smuggled into the future where they will be adopted and raised again by new families. “You have you’re going to have to choose,” he said. “ Your now is off-limits. Which is it going to be the --- the future or the past?” Page 293, line 4.   F: “Missing” children Chip and Alex are sent against there will, into the past. Jonah and Katherine are sent to bring them back and restore time under the approval of a Time Peacekeeper. “ What if... what if we could fix the fifteenth century? Make everything right again? Then couldn’t Alex and Chip come back to the twenty-first century with us?” Page 313, line 7.
IV. Message                     Moral: Fight for what you know to be right. And if you mess with time travel you’re going to get burned. “If we hadn’t discovered how to hold back the ripple, just temporarily, just until we can heal all of the wounds, until we return the children to there right place in history.” Page 287, line 1 Tone: Serious and Suspenseful “Thirty-six children killed. And sadly, the bodies will never be found.” Page 308, line 1.      Authors Purpose: the authors purpose id to entertain, I know this because of the way she describes time travel. She uses a hypothetical theory of a subatomic particle, tachyon that is believed to be able to be faster than the speed of light allowing there to be 2 of an object but not different realities. Instead of using facts to inform the reader about this theory the author has a bunch of crazy people from the future running around smuggling babies and destroying the time space continuum . “Time and space would have a different relationship. Aging would be different. And, and if a plane could travel that fast it would become a time-machine.” Page 173, line 15.    I believe the mood of the novel could be changed if the characters instead of being timid, frigid, and scared were more adventurous and optimistic. If the characters treated there predicament more like a mystery. I believe though the author added events in the story like the FBI being involved and people searching the main characters house to wire fear into the story.
V. Wording       Metaphor: pg.64 line 7 : “Chip’s face had suddenly gone deathly pale.” Symbolism: pg.116 line 15: “The living room bay window curved out invitingly, the lights blazed... home looked like such a safe place .” Personification: pg.144 line 11: “Chip’s blue eyes were pleading and desperate.”
VI. Genre of Writing The book “Found” by Margaret Peterson Haddix is science fiction. I know this because of the plot and occurrences in the story that are not realistic. In the book the main character Jonah, is found with 36 other babies on a plane that traveled through time and took a crash landing. This is a very unrealistic situation and is a great example of why “Found” is science fiction.
