  2. 2. Ideas for reform. I chose this article because we have been reading and discussing the trends and changes in society that are putting American students at a disadvantage. As the world continues to “flatten” we are all looking for ideas and solutions. It is essential that we remain knowledgeable of the efforts of others. Knowing what is working and not working for educational institutions across the country and across the globe is invaluable.

  4. 4. <ul><li>Curriculum Reform </li></ul><ul><li>West Virginia and North Carolina are rewriting standards, curriculum and assessments incorporating: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>The International Society for Technology in Education’s National Education Technology Standards </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Partnership for 21 st Century Learning Framework </li></ul></ul>West Virginia “expects to integrate the new standards and assessments by 2009”
  5. 5. <ul><li>District Level Changes </li></ul><ul><li>Many districts around the country are also integrating 21 st Century Skills Framework . </li></ul><ul><li>Lawrence Township Schools in Indiana, used this framework in the development of its seven literacies: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Technology literacy </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Basic literacy </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Information literacy </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Visual Literacy </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Higher-order thinking skills </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Self direction </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Cultural competency </li></ul></ul>
  6. 6. Asia International Studies Schools Network (ISSN) <ul><li>ISSN has 10 high schools throughout the United States that are designed to prepare students for success in a global society. Their vision is for graduates to speak a second language and have the necessary cultural competencies. </li></ul>New Technology Foundation (NTF) <ul><li>NTF has 25 schools across the nation. They are also focused on preparing students for the digital world. NTF offers a “student-centric learning environment”. </li></ul>
  7. 7. Are these schools successful? The Asia International Studies Schools Network is working with the Consortium for Policy Research in Education to develop assessment tools that will forecast success in the global society. The New Technology Foundation conducted a survey of graduates of the first school. 89% reported attending college. 92% reported that they have applied what they have learned in school and career.
  8. 8. Applications The six key elements of 21 st century learning can be integrated into our classrooms.
