The use of falling water as a source of energy by converting it into
electricity is known as Hydroelectric Power. It is one of the oldest
and extremely flexible technology for power generation.
Renewable
But does not use water, all of the
water is returned to its source of origin
hence classifying it as
Renewable resources are those
which can be replenished over
time by some natural process.
These resources have the ability to
be renewed over a short period of
time.
The prices of fuels keep on increasing on and off. Due to which the
cost of electricity also keeps on changing but due to rainfalls the rate
of hydroelectricity remains constant somewhat and does not
increase much. Hydropower source can lighten the country 24/7
whole year.
The rate of electricity produced can be changed by varying the speed of
water flow. The faster it would flow, the more energy it will have to run
the turbines. So ultimately turbines convert the comparably greater
amount of energy
Another benefit of dams is that they not only produce electricity but
also saves and reserves water so that the water is not wasted into
oceans and seas. So it is like two advantages in a single packet!
Dams can also be used for other purposes like fishing and sports.
Hydropower plants create vacancies for managers, technicians,
construction workers, marketers, receptionists and many more.
Mega hydropower plants can invite tourists and other machinery
enthusiasts to visit the stations and learn some tit-bits about how
they function.
Although the effective cost is zero but the manufacturing and
building a dam and installation of the turbines is very costly. Its
construction requires a lot of human capital and labor. Its
maintenance is also very costly.
Large amounts of plant life are submerged and decay anaerobically
generating greenhouse gases like methane. It is estimated that a
hydroelectric power plant produces 3.5 times the amount of
greenhouse gases as a thermal power plant burning fossil fuels.
The formation of large and huge dams destroys the living beings
around them. Local life is disturbed as human can’t live in such a
flooded area and so need to relocate. Plant life is disturbed.
PAKISTAN HAS ABOUT A TOTAL OF 35 DAMS.
TARBELA DAM: It is built on River Indus. It is one of the largest
dams in the world.
MANGLA DAM: It is built on River Jhelum.
WARSAK DAM: It is built on the River Kabul.
35% of Pakistan’s electricity requirements are met by
hydroelectric power
