2. Love Actually – Opening Scene
1st Shot – The opening scene starts off
with an over the shoulder shot of a man
in a seemingly crowded place. It is a
shallow focus with a woman in focus but
the rest of the people aren’t. The non
diegetic music in the background is slow
and sounds quite angelic – which settles
you into the film.
2nd Shot – The second shot is a mid shot
of a woman and two little girls. They have
their arms out towards each other which
suggests that they are about to hug each
other. The woman has a bag with her
which connotes that she might be coming
back from somewhere. The music in the
background is still quite slow paced.
3. Love Actually – Opening Scene
3rd Shot - This is a close-up (and a two
shot) of two people that are hugging each
other. This shot suggests that they are
quite close with each other and have
probably not seen each other for a long
time. The music in the background is still
ongoing.
4th Shot – This is another two shot of a
woman and a child. It is a shallow focus
since the background is quite blurry whilst
the woman and the child are in focus. At
this point of the scene, a narrator starts
speaking and the music in the background
is still ongoing but quieter.
4. Love Actually – Opening Scene
5th
Shot – This shot is another two shot of
two women hugging and it is also a
shallow focus. The narrator continues on
speaking and so does the music. The use
of two shots in this opening scene
suggests that the film will most likely be
about two people and their relationship
with one another.
6th Shot – This is a close up of a woman
smiling and it is also a shallow focus. She
is smiling and facing the left side which
suggests that she is going somewhere.
So far in the opening scene, the people
look really happy which suggests that
this film will be a happy and lighthearted one. The narrator says that “love
is everywhere” which also implies that
this is a film about love.
5. Love Actually – Opening Scene
7th Shot – This is another two shot but it
also counts as an over the shoulder shot.
The man in the shot is smiling which
suggests that he is happy to see the
woman. This shot also implies that the
two people have a connection with one
another.
8th Shot – This is also another two shot
of a man and a baby hugging. Their
closeness with one another suggests that
they have a loving relationship. This is a
shallow focus as well which helps bring
the audience’s attention to the man and
the baby.
6. Love Actually – Opening Scene
9th Shot – The last shot is another two shot of a
woman and a little girl hugging. It is also a shallow
focus which again brings our attention to them. Their
faces look happy which suggests that this is probably
the first time they’ve seen each other for a long time.
The narrator is still talking over the non diegetic
music.
7. Scott Pilgrim vs the World – Opening Scene
1st Shot – The opening scene starts off with
an establishing shot and this is used to show
where the action takes place. The place has
lots of snow which suggests that the film is
set in a cold place. This is also shot from a
low angle which makes the house look big
and menacing in a way.
2nd Shot – The next shot is a long shot of
people in what seems to be a kitchen. The
three people that are sitting down seem to
be all facing the same person which suggests
that they are talking to him. This is also a
deep focus which means that everyone in
the shot is important.
8. Scott Pilgrim vs the World – Opening Scene
3rd Shot – This shot is a high angle mid shot
of a girl sitting down. She has her arms
crossed which suggests that she might be
feeling angry or cold. The high angle makes
her seem small and vulnerable.
4th Shot - This is a mid shot of a person
facing the kitchen counter and it is also an
over-the-shoulder shot of the girl. However
the girl is out of focus while the other
person is in focus which suggests that he is
more important. These two people could
also be connected to each other and the girl
seems to be looking at him.
9. Scott Pilgrim vs the World – Opening Scene
5th Shot – This is a close up of the girl’s face.
It is a shallow focus which brings the
audience’s attention to her face. The close
up is also used in order to show her facial
expressions. Her mouth seems to be open
which suggests that she is talking to
someone.
6th Shot – This is another close up but this
time, it is of the boy instead. He is smiling
and his eyes are directed towards the side
which suggests that he might be looking at
someone. There is text on the side that tells
us his name, age and rating. This also
suggests that he might be an important
character.
10. Scott Pilgrim vs the World – Opening Scene
7th Shot – This is an over the shoulder shot.
The person in focus seems to be looking at
another person which suggests that they are
probably talking to each other. The over the
shoulder shot is used to show two people
communicating with each other.
8th Shot – The next shot we see is a mid shot
of another person. It can also be identified
as a shallow focus since the person is the
only one that is in focus and the rest are all
blurred. This enhances the importance of
the character. He seems to be holding a
handheld game console which suggests that
he might be playing a game. However his
gaze is directed towards a person which can
also imply that he is listening to that person.
11. Scott Pilgrim vs the World – Opening Scene
9th Shot – This last shot is another mid shot of a previous
person. He is holding a mug which implies that he is
drinking something. He also seems to be talking to
someone.
12. The Ring – Opening Scene
1st Shot – We are first shown an
establishing shot of a house. This is used to
inform the readers where the scene takes
place. The house looks quite dark and
terrifying which implies that this might be a
horror film and/or something bad will
happen. The diegetic sound of the rain also
adds tension to the scene.
2nd Shot – This long shot of two girls
lounging in a bedroom immediately
introduces the main characters of the
scene. Both of their gazes are fixated on
something and one of the girls is holding a
remote. This tells the audience that they
are watching television.
13. The Ring – Opening Scene
3rd Shot – Next we are shown a point of
view shot of the television. This shot is
used to help the audience focus on what
the characters are looking at. It is also a
subtle hint that a television plays an
important role in this film.
4th Shot – The next shot is a two shot of the
two girls continuing their conversation.
14. The Ring – Opening Scene
5th Shot – The two girls continue on talking
and the next shot we see is a close up of
one of the girl’s face. This close up helps
the audience get familiar with her and
brings their attention to her facial
expressions and what she is saying.
6th Shot – This next shot is a shot reverse
shot and it is used to tell the audience that
the characters are looking and
communicating with each other.
15. The Ring – Opening Scene
7th Shot – This is another shot reverse shot.
8th Shot – The camera then zooms into a
close up of one of the character’s face and
this helps bring the audience’s attention to
her actions and dialogue.
