1. 1. Solar Energy Zespół Szkół Ogólnokształcących nr7 in Katowice
    2. 2. Solar energy

What is solar energy?

Solar energy means energy from the sun. Although the sun is 150 million kilometers away from the Earth, it is amazingly powerful. We can capture some of the sun’s energy and use it to heat buildings, provide light and generate electricity.

    3. 3. Advantages of solar energy

It is renewable energy. The sun gives out ‘free’ power all the time.

It is silent, causes no pollution and does not harm wildlife.

It provides energy where it is used, so there is no need for large cables.

It is useful in remote places, and works on a small or large scale.

    4. 4. Possible disadvantages

Solar power does not work at night.

At the moment, PV cells are expensive (but getting cheaper).

    5. 5. Experiment with solar energy

Your teacher will help you set up a solar collector. Rocord the temperature of the water before the test.

Make sure the box lid is well covered with clingfilm ( no gaps)

Leave the box outside in sunny place for 1 or 2 hours

Measure the temperature of water

Write down what happened and explain why ?

    6. 6. Conclusions:

Temperature of water contained in a small polythene bag (tied tightly) increases.Solar energy heats the water.Higher temperature of water was observed in a paper box inlaid with a black paper. Water placed in a box inlaid with a white paper heats slower.

    7. 7. 1. What is the Solar Energy ?

Thermal and radiation energy.

It does not exist.

Solar energy is slightly known energy source.

    8. 8. Check your answer.

True, Solar energy is enegry from sunny warm and his radiation.

False, solar energy exists. We know, how to get it and processes in electric power or warm.

False, with assistance of PV cells, we can get energy from sun.

    9. 9. 2. Sunny power Station processes ………. into energy.

Biomass

Wind

Solar

    10. 10. Check your answer.

False, biomass is energy nautral power from animal matter ( wood, straw, sewage and waste food ).

False, wind energy gets form m ovements of air .

True, Sunny Power station processes solar enegry to heat buildings, provide light and generate electricity.

    11. 11. 3. PV cells can produce energy as a result of :

Photosynthesis phenomenon.

Dissociation phenomenon.

Photovoltaic phenomenon.

    12. 12. Check your answer.

False, Photosynthesi s is a m etabolic pathway that converts carbon dioxide into organic compounds with the energy from sunlight

False, Dissociation is a general process in which ionic compounds separate or split into smaller molecules

True, Photovoltaic processes in solar cells for energy by converting sunlight directly into electricity.
