Why this project?Wood biomass is an important source of energy in allparticipating countries and beyondThere are still unused potentials in the forests all across Europe.Local biomass markets in many countries are fragmentedand unorganized.Energy contracting is a new and innovative opportunity forinvestments with high added value appropriate for forest owners, farmers, and other target groups in rural areas.Biomass quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) and tracingthe origin of wood biomass will play an important role in the biomassheat and electricity market in the years to come.
What are we planning to do?Organize more than 320 events to engage differenttarget groups and to build capacity in participatingcountriesHelp new investors with feasibility studies, one-to onemeetings, open days, study toursTrain professionals and other end users through trainingand publicationsSupport the development of the whole biomassproduction chain: from forests and other resources tothe production of energy
Expected resultsGuidelines for product labellingPromotion and implementation of EU CEN standardsPromotion of energy contracting modelRealization of new biomass trade and logistics centersRealization of new bioenergy businessPromotion of good practice examplesMobilization of wood biomass from forests and otherresourcesSolid overview of biomass production chains
Work programme• WP1: Management• WP2: Promotion of new investments in woodbiomass production• WP3: Implementation of Biomass trade and logisticscentres• WP4: Implementation of wood energy contracting• WP5: Promotion of Quality standards andsustainability criteria• WP6: Communication and dissemination• WP7: EACI dissemination activities
Wood biomass production• An overview on wood biomass production in: Slovenia, Croatia,Austria, Italy, Greece, Romania, Spain (incl. Catalonia), Germanyand Ireland. All reports are available in national language and inEnglish athttp://www.biomasstradecentre2.eu/wood-biomass-production/state-of-th/• Technical backgrounds for advance wood biomass production areprepared (more than 100 pages) and published in English athttp://www.biomasstradecentre2.eu/wood-biomass-production/• Wood fuel Handbook was translated to Croatian, Spanish,Catalan, Greek and Romanian language. Handbook are nowavailable in onhttp://www.biomasstradecentre2.eu/biomass-trade-and-logistics-centers/b• More than 4.300 participants at 80 events organized by partners
Service providers• Catalogues of forestry companies and biomass producerswith 29 best practise examples of wood biomass productionare available on http://www.biomasstradecentre2.eu/wood-biomass-production/catalogu/• Internet application – easy searcher of service providers bycountry, region and type of production was launched inAugust 2012• Available on:http://www.biomasstradecentre2.eu/wood-biomass-production/serv
Biomass trade and logisticcenters• Training of project partners was organized – Good practiceexamples from Austria were presented.• Generic guidelines for establishment of biomass trade centerswere translated into Croatian, Spanish, Catalan, Greek andRomanian language. Guidelines are now available in on:http://www.biomasstradecentre2.eu/biomass-trade-and-logistics-centers/b• Workshops, study tours and open days are organized to promotedevelopment of biomass centers in participating countries andbeyond.• More than 4.100 participants were reached at 98 eventsorganized by partners• 6 new biomass trade and logistic centers are already build – withtechnical support of this project, 10 projects are in preparationphase.
Energy contracting• Energy contracting is a market orientated model for selling heatproduced from biomass to one or more users (as local or districtheating). It is a new and innovative opportunity for investmentswith high added value appropriate for forest owners, farmers, andother target groups in rural areas.• Document: ”Energy contracting – Business model for energyservices” was published:http://www.biomasstradecentre2.eu/wood-energy-contracting/energ• Booklet about energy contracting has been prepared –currently it is in translation from German toother national languages• More than 480 participants were reached at 10 eventsorganized by partners
Quality standards for woodfuels• The state-of-the-art report regarding quality certification schemes andlabelling in Slovenia, Croatia, Austria, Italy, Greece, Romania, Catalonia,Spain, Germany and Ireland were prepared. All reports are available innational language and in English athttp://www.biomasstradecentre2.eu/quality-standards/state-of-the-art/• Good practice examples of QA/QC implementation and/or labelling ofwood fuels in participating countries were selected and described – someexamples are already available onhttp://www.biomasstradecentre2.eu/quality-standards/good-practice-examples/• A network of wood biomass laboratories was established – at themoment there are 22 biomass laboratories included – all informationsabout this laboratories are available on:http://www.biomasstradecentre2.eu/quality-standards/network-of-wood-biomass-laboratories/• Meeting of representatives from biomass laboratories was organized inItaly (5.10.2012)
Monitoring of wood fuelprices• All partners has to send their data on wood fuels pricesin March and September.• The wood fuels prices report are being published on theproject web site twice a year.• Reports are available onhttp://www.biomasstradecentre2.eu/wood-fuel-prices/
