By: USTAZ ZHULKEFLEE HJ ISMAIL 13 August 2011 @ Galaxy Changi Road, for Muslim Converts’ Assocn. Of Singapore (MCAS) (Darul Arqam Singapore) TADZKIRAH : RAMADHAN REFLECTION (2011). “ The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months. “
    • In every Ramadhan, this topic excites many Muslims as it highlight something extraordinary which Allah wish to confer upon this Ummah which previous people were not granted - i.e. LAILA-TUL- QADR a night which exceed the goodness of that of a thousand months.
    • Some may come expecting to listen to the usual theme of enumerating its significance, seeking to know when it occur, what ought to be done that night, etc. - singling out only the radiance of LAILATUL-QADR .
All Rights Reserved © Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2011)
    • Yet its context, may be liken as looking at the apex (peak) , a possible bonus (superlative achievement) in Ramadhan but only granted to only some , whom Allah chooses.
    • Actually, LAILATUL-QADR sits atop a whole mountain of many benefits of Allah’s other extraordinary gifts, blessings, possible achievements and bestowals, already on-hand to be conferred upon every striving Muslim this Ramadhan. Do not then “ miss the forest for the trees. ”
    • So let us be reminded.

    • To truly understand this subject of “ Laila-tul-Qadr ”, we have to remind ourselves of many essential aspects in the Islamic teachings.
    • Without which, some may draw wrong conclusion, or develop erroneous attitudes, or overlook the essentials in our ‘ibadat because of their being obsessed with that which are secondary.
    • Being a true MUSLIM and a MU’MEEN (Believer), is not a seasonal affair. It is not a game to occasionally indulged in some month and neglectful for the rest of the year.
All Rights Reserved © Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2011)
    • Perhaps some Muslims may become distracted from what is already assured by Allah for every Muslim to focus upon in Ramadhan , perhaps thinking that by ‘spotting’ the LAILA-TUL-QADR ’, they can in this one night, circumvent their neglect of upholding these essential belief and practices obligatory upon Muslims.
    • Perhaps they may hope for a short-cut, because the benefit of “ Laila-tul-Qadr ” , but to be conferred the benefit of this night “ which is better than a thousand months ” is like the “ crown ” – given by Allah only to those who are deserving in His Sight (not for just any and every one).
All Rights Reserved © Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2011)
    • In hoping for the ‘ crowning glory ’, do not overlook “ the basic dressing which we must already be attired with. ” What is a crown to a person without clothes? What is the crown on a person wearing filthy rags?
    • In hoping for the ‘ crowning glory ” , consider whether we have put in enough efforts which can make us deserving of the crown.
    • Are we not ashamed to ‘imagine’ that we can gain this crown based upon our meagre efforts? And no matter how much we may have done in our ‘ibaadah , still it is up to Allah alone to judge and confer this to whom He pleases – by His Grace and Mercy.

    • Therefore do not be distracted with competing merely in outward deeds but neglect our inner selves, which Allah’s gaze would be upon.
    • So let us consider what these essentials which we are supposed to busy ourselves with, before considering the “ crown ”.
    • Let us strive to do as much as we can to uphold those essential teachings that Allah and His Messenger Muhammad s.a.a.w. has enjoined upon us to do. Ability in doing this is already a great success:

    • TAUHEED
    • The most important teaching, the foundation of this Deen-al-Islam , is this - “ attestation to the Oneness of Allah ”; negating all forms of “ SHIRK ”; being convinced of the meaning of our purpose for existing by believing in those aspect enumerated in the “ ARKAA-NUL-IIMAN ”.
    • To strictly conform to this – AQEEDAH – is vital before our good deeds or every acts of worship (devotion & servitude) can be acceptable. Thus we have to remember to make the DZIKR and DU’A as taught by our Prophet Muhammad s.a.a.w. to re-new and re-affirm our Faith.

    • ARKAANUL-ISLAM
    • From the ARKAA-NUL-IIMAN , we are convinced as to the meaning and purpose of our life. Then we are to continuously strive patiently as best as we can, to submit to Allah’s will by following the perfected Deen of Al-Islam, as established by Allah’s Final Messenger, Prophet Muhammad s.a.a.w.
    • We begin building our complete personality as MUSLIM , upon the Five essential practices termed as “ ARKAA-NUL-ISLAM ” beginning with the SHAHADAHTAIN , and to constantly keeping alive by avoiding SHIRK and repeating the KALIMATUT-TAUHEED .
WHAT ARE THESE ESSENTIALS All Rights Reserved © Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2011)
    • LOVE FOR THE PROPHET MUHAMMAD S.A.A.W.
    • And the second aspect of the KALIMAH-SHAHADATAIN , to bear witness to Prophet Muhammad s.a.a.w. As the final messenger of Allah.
    • This requires us to always strive to be loyal to him – nay to be grateful to Allah – by developing proper respect and being true in our love for him and AHLIL-BAYTIHI (people of his household, his wives and progeny ); upholding his legacy and continuing his DA’WAH and being concern for his UMMAH ; responding to Allah’s command to regard him as the best exemplar.

    • LOVE FOR THE PROPHET MUHAMMAD S.A.A.W.
WHAT ARE THESE ESSENTIALS All Rights Reserved © Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2011) Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. said: “None of you is a (true) believer until he loves me more than he love his own self, or his parent, or his son, or every other human being.” ( Hadith reported by Bukhary and Muslim )

    • SWOLAH
    • After SHAHADATAIN , and to remain a Muslim, the obligatory SWOLAH is the next most important acts to be constantly established. This is the “pillar of the DEEN ”, where judgement of all of our good deeds depends upon it being established.
    • Apart from the obligatory SWOLAH , we are also enjoined additional NAWAAAFIL prayers , because Allah guides us with a command to seek His help through SWOBR’ (patient perseverance) and SWOLAH .
    • And this itself depends upon the state of our inner humility ( KHASHA’A ) before Allah’s presence.

    • SWOLAH
WHAT ARE THESE ESSENTIALS All Rights Reserved © Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2011) “ And seek aid in steadfast patience ( SWOBR’ ) and prayer ( SWOLAH ): and this, indeed, is a hard thing for all but the humble in spirit” ( Qur’an: Baqarah: 2: 45 )
    • AZ-ZAKAH
    • Closely linked to Swolah is the command of paying the Zakat . This highlights the importance of wealth as the means to serve Allah. Islam enjoins Muslims to fulfil their social obligation and not to be selfish, miserly and obsessively materialistic.
    • One of the meaning of “ Zakah ” is to “ purify and make it to grow ”:
    • - purifying our hearts and soul from miserliness, greed and worldly attachment, and make it to grow in generosity, compassion and selfless service to mankind – sincerely giving to gain Allah’s approval.

    • FASTING IN RAMADHAN
    • Then comes FASTING in Ramadhan, a special and unique program of re-orientating the life of Submission, and strengthening them with Faith ( IIMAN ) and steadfastness in obedience ( ISTIQOMAH ), with self-discipline and overcoming desires, towards attaining the station of TAQWA .
    • RAMADHAN was selected with its many Blessings, bestowals and bounties placed within it. The observance of FASTING itself is a boon of great benefit, as means for us to traverse towards Allah’s Mercy and Forgiveness, - the door leading towards Allah’s Paradise.

    • FASTING IN RAMADHAN
WHAT ARE THESE ESSENTIALS All Rights Reserved © Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2011) “ O YOU who have attained to faith! Fasting is ordained for you as it was ordained for those before you, so that you might remain conscious of God ( TAQWA ).” ( Qur’an: Baqarah: 2: 183 )
    • TAUBAH - REPENTANCE
    • If we are honest and truthful, we know and must admit that we have much failings and shortcomings. Our sins throughout the year are immense, while our good deeds are insignificant and very few indeed.
    • Yet Islam teaches us never to despair – but to come to Allah and repent, seeking the Mercy and Forgiveness of Allah. This is especially so in this blessed month of Ramadhan.
    • We must always make true and sincere repentance ( TAUBAH ); to make reparation for wrongdoings as best as we can; and seek the forgiveness of those whom we have wronged and especially towards Allah SWT.
WHAT ARE THESE ESSENTIALS All Rights Reserved © Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2011)
    • TAUBAH - REPENTANCE
WHAT ARE THESE ESSENTIALS All Rights Reserved © Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2011) “ O you who have attained to faith! Turn unto Allah in sincere repentance: it may well be that your Sustainer will efface from you your bad deeds, and will admit you into gardens (Paradise)” ( Qur’an: Tahrim: 66: 8 )

  • “ BEHOLD, from on high have We bestowed this [divine writ] on Night of Decree. And what could make thee conceive what it is, that Night of Decree? The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months: the angels and Spirit descend in it , bearing divine inspiration by their Sustainer's leave; ‘ Peace ! ‘ (making secure from all [evil] that may happen), until the rise of dawn. “ ( Qur’an: al-Qadr’: 97: 1-5 ) All Rights Reserved © Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2011)
    • We must note the manner in which the subject of LAILA-TU-QADR was introduced in this Surah came only after Allah s.w.t. reminds us to behold AL-QUR’AN that was being revealed.
    • It is AL-QUR’AN that was emphasised, as the proof of NUBUWWAT of our Prophet Muhammad s.a.a.w; the book and the standing miracle ( MU’JIZAT ) that is preserved and still available for every one without having to search for it. The Book of Guidance for Muslims.
    • Whereas the reference to it being revealed in LAILA-TUL-QADR only added to its already esteemed position. Rather than speculating in seeking for the night, Muslim must not be distracted from what is already available ( AL-QUR’AN ) - regarding our obligation to recite, studied, reflected and its teachings heeded and applied.

    • Lest we forget, the month of Ramadhan indeed was the month in which the Qur’an was sent down.
“ Ramadhan is the (month) in which was sent down the Qur'an, as a guide to mankind, also clear (Signs) for guidance and judgment (Between right and wrong).” ( Qur’an: Baqarah: 2: 185 ) All Rights Reserved © Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2011)
    • Ibn `Abbas r.a. and others have said, "Allah sent the Qur'an down all at one time from the ‘Preserved Tablet’ ( Al-Lawh Al-Mahfuz ) to the ‘House of Might’ ( Baytul-`Izzah ), which is in the heaven of this world.
    • Then, from there it came down in parts at intervals to the Messenger of Allah based upon the incidents that occurred over a period of twenty-three years.'

    • Although the whole Qur’an has already been revealed, yet in every year this special night – LAILATUL-QADR – still will continue to recur.
    • Although we do not know with absolute certainty as to which night of Ramadhan it may occur each year, our not knowing it should motivate us to be ever prepared for it in every night of Ramadhan.
    • Also, knowing the night is not as important as our being prepared for the night. If this month of Ramadhan can be liken as a “journey” then the best provision for this journey indeed is TAQWA . Surely, those whom Allah would confer would be people of TAQWA . Lest we forget, FASTING itself was commanded by Allah for us believers, so that we may attain to TAQWA .
