16. 16. All Rights Reserved © Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail 2012 ) AN IMPORTANT ADVICE
 17. 17. “ O YOU who have believed, protect yourselves and your families from a Fire (Hell) whose fuel is people and stones, over which are [appointed] angels, harsh and severe; they do not disobey Allah in what He commands them but do what they are commanded.” ( Qur’an: Tahrim: 66: 6 ) All Rights Reserved © Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail 2012 )
 18. 18. “ From amongst the rights of a children upon their parents are, that they be instilled (i.e. to be educated by them) with ADAB and to be given a good name.” ( Hadith of the Prophet s.a.w. reported by Baihaqy from Ibnu ‘Abbas r.a .) All Rights Reserved © Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail 2012 )
 19. 19. “ So by mercy from Allah, [O Muhammad], you were lenient with them. And if you had been rude [in speech] and harsh in heart, they would have disbanded from about you. So pardon them and ask forgiveness for them and consult them in the matter.” ( Qur’an: Aali ‘Imran: 3: 159 ) All Rights Reserved © Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail 2012 )
 20. 20. “ Verily I am to you all, like a father is to his child.” ( Hadith of Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. reported by Abu Dawud, An-Nasa’i Ibn Majah, Ibnu Hibban from Abu Hurayrah r.a .) All Rights Reserved © Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail 2012 )
 21. 21. “ Honour your children by (educating) instilling in them the best Adab .” ( Hadith of the Prophet s.a.w. reported by Ibnu Majah from Ibnu ‘Abbas r.a. ) All Rights Reserved © Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail 2012 )
 22. 22. “ We the prophets are commanded to place people according to their station and to speak unto them in accordance with their intellectual capacity.” ( Hadith reported by Abu Dawud from A’isyah r.a .) All Rights Reserved © Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail 2012 )
 23. 23. All Rights Reserved © Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail 2012 ) “ Do you bid other people to be pious (righteous), the while you forget your own selves -and yet you recite the divine writ? Will you not, then, use your reason?” ( Qur’an: Baqarah: 2: 44 ) AN IMPORTANT ADVICE
 24. 24.

Perhaps one of the principles ( Qawaa-id ) will explain:

“ Every matter (knowledge, skill, etc.), for which an obligation cannot be fulfilled except by (possessing) it (i.e. knowledge and skill), its acquisition is (therefore) obligatory (waajib).”

An Islamic principle .

Before one can be a good teacher, one has to prove oneself to being a good student. All Rights Reserved © Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail 2012 ) AN IMPORTANT ADVICE
 25. 25.

In my experience with educating adult Muslims regarding their DEEN , there are quite a number of confusion, which may need to be addressed and clarified. If we do not correct this in people who are in the position to teach our children, great harm may occur.

Even some Islamic terms we commonly used may already be wrongly understood and thus misapplied – exacerbating further the confusion.

Some pertinent examples of these confusion are :

ILMU- UKHRAWI – as referring to Islamic religious knowledge;

SECULAR knowledge – as though referring to every worldly knowledge other than from Islam’s primary sources;

FARDHU ‘AIN - only pertains to knowing about Rukun Islam and Iman ;

All Rights Reserved © Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail 2012 ) AN IMPORTANT ADVICE
 26. 26.

The worldview held by many of us may have already been tainted by other philosophy, ideology or sub-culture and we know we need to “Islamise” it. This is vital in matters dealing with the education of Muslims.

Yet, it cannot be done merely by “ fusing ”, or “ grafting ” the Islamic components upon what has been developed from worldview based upon concepts or philosophy from others, some of which may be opposed to Islamic values. Unless such anomalies are addressed, the exercise to add Islamic components would be mere ‘cosmetic ’ Islamization.

As Muslim educators, we need to understand terms and concepts from the Islamic perspective or worldview ( TASAWWUR ISLAM ).

All Rights Reserved © Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail 2012 ) AN IMPORTANT ADVICE
 27. 27. All Rights Reserved © Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail 2012 ) “ And seek help through steadfast patience and prayer, and indeed, it is difficult except for the humbly submissive [to Allah].” ( Qur’an: Baqarah: 2: 45 )
 28. 28. All Rights Reserved © Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail 2012 ) “ Everyone of you is leader (shepherd) and will be question regarding those whom you lead (look after).” ( Hadith reported by Bukhary and Muslim
 29. 29. ADDENDUM All Rights Reserved © Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail 2012 ) AN IMPORTANT ADVICE
 30. 30. “ Verily We created Man from a drop of mingled sperm, in order to try him: so We gave him (the gifts), of Hearing and Sight. We showed him the Way: whether he be grateful or ungrateful ( rests on his will ).” ( Qur’an: al-Insan: 76:2-3 ) All Rights Reserved © Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail 2012 )
 31. 31. “ But nay - they who are bent on evildoing follow but their own desires , without having any knowledge (of the truth). And who could guide those whom Allah has [thus] let go astray, and who (thereupon) have none to succour them?” ( Qur’an: Rum: 30: 29 ) All Rights Reserved © Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail 2012 )
 32. 32. All Rights Reserved © Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail 2012 )
 33. 33. “ AND SO, set thy face steadfastly towards the [one ever-true] faith, turning away from all that is false, in accordance with the natural disposition ( FITwRAH ) which Allah has instilled into man: [for,] not to allow any change to corrupt what Allah has thus created this is the [purpose of the one] ever-true faith; but most people know it not.-” ( Qur’an: Rum: 30: 30 ) All Rights Reserved © Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail 2012 )
 34. 34. All Rights Reserved © Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail 2012 ) “ Every child is born in a state of Fitwrah (pure innocence); it is the parent that will make him to be a Jew, or a Christian, or a pagan (Majusi).” ( Hadith )
 35. 35. All Rights Reserved © Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail 2012 ) “ Educate (nurture ADAB in) your children upon three things: [1] To Love your Prophet (s.a.w.), [2] And to love the Family members of his household (Aali Muhammad), [3] and (learn) to recite Al-Qur’an.” ( Hadith narrated by Tabrani )
 36. 36. All Rights Reserved © Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail 2012 )
 37. 37. All Rights Reserved © Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail 2012 ) “ LET IT NOT deceive thee that those who are bent on denying the truth seem to be able to do as they please on earth: it is [but] a brief enjoyment, with hell thereafter as their goal - and how vile a resting-place! - whereas those who remain conscious of their Sustainer shall have gardens through which running waters flow, therein to abide: a ready welcome from Allah. And that which is with Allah is best for the truly virtuous.” ( Qur’an: Aali ‘Imran: 3: 196-198 )
 38. 38.

Remember, Islam teaches that the success of our education is not merely in Muslims being knowledgeable but requires that such knowledge must transform their disposition ( AKHLAQ ) with noble virtues leading to TAQWA - the raison d'être of our Prophet’s mission as in one of his sayings.

“ Verily, I have not been sent (as Prophet) except to perfect the noble Akhlaq (disposition of mankind).” ( Hadith reported by Malik ) All Rights Reserved © Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
 39. 39.

And Allah s.w.t. clearly asserts what the true value system as to who is noble amongst mankind, should be based upon what He deems to be noble.

So, as Muslims, we must not be distracted and deviate into blindly imitating others. Allah s.w.t. says:

“ Verily, the noblest of you in the sight of Allah is the one who is most deeply conscious of Him ( TAQWA ). Behold, Allah is all-knowing, all-aware.” ( Qur’an: Hujurat: 39: 13 ) All Rights Reserved © Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
 40. 40.

Education of Muslims begins with instilling ADAB until it becomes their second nature or what we mean by “ AKHLAQ “ , or disposition, as asserted by Imam Hujwiri rhm.a. :

AKHLAQ : “ are non-contrived praiseworthy actions not proceeding from particular motives. Their outer form is in harmony with their inner truth; they are actions devoid of pretension.”

All Rights Reserved © Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)

Naming in fact is the beginning of a child’s cognitive and communicative education.

Then our Prophet s.a.w. was nurtured amongst the bedouin tribe of Bani Sa’adah, which instilled in him the pure Arabic language and the noble mannerism.

Imam Muhammad Idris Ash-Shafi-’ie rhm.a. excelled in the Arabic language and learning the bedouin ways, before he went on learning and mastering other Islamic sciences.

All Rights Reserved © Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012) EXCERPTS FROM MY “LESSONS ON ISLAMIC ADAB”
 48. 48.

Speaking to a child should be done with clarity , in our diction or pronunciation, mindful of the message In our heart / mind when we convey it without us lapsing into gibberish.

Thus, exposure to the Qur’anic recitations would in actual fact not only be exposing them to a “ perfected speech from Allah” but also invoking blessings and other attending bestowals upon the child.

All Rights Reserved © Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012) EXCERPTS FROM MY “LESSONS ON ISLAMIC ADAB”
 49. 49.

Exposure to direct human voice must be preferred to sound (of musical) inanimate machine or even television. Shelter them from those with uncouth trait and especially evil people. Do not ignore or take this advice lightly.

When speaking, the volume or tone of our voice etc. ; the courtesy inherent within the manner of our speech; the accompanying emotions, feeling and our stress in moral values etc. are very important to be considered as these would inevitably be absorbed by the child – even while they are in their crib/cradle.

All Rights Reserved © Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012) EXCERPTS FROM MY “LESSONS ON ISLAMIC ADAB”
 50. 50.

Remember: The key to clarity in one’s thoughts depends very much upon the clarity of one’s language proficiency.

And a young child can be taught several languages. They have a tremendous capacity and love to imitate ( HUB-BUT-TAQ-LEED ).

An Arabic saying : “ Memorising when young is like etching on stones, whereas memorising when one is old (in comparison) it would be like writing on water .”

Rote learning in a child’s education is very necessary, although we should be creative to ensure effectiveness. Knowing which to be taught (priority and quantum) is important.

All Rights Reserved © Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012) EXCERPTS FROM MY “LESSONS ON ISLAMIC ADAB”
 51. 51.

Through the teaching of language which utilizes stories and anecdotes, we transfer our cultural , historical , religious and moral values, connecting them to aspects or our ancestral heritage, instilling in them dignity and rootedness, which are important to formation of an identity ( shakh-siyyah ).

If these are neglected – na-’uudzu-billah – we would have lost the opportunity and may even, by its omission, expose the child to defective factors in their formative upbringing that may impede their future Islamic education.

All Rights Reserved © Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012) EXCERPTS FROM MY “LESSONS ON ISLAMIC ADAB”
