doing good deeds, not intending it for Allah’s sake

“From Ibnu ‘Abbas r.a. regarding Allah’s verse :

                  "And they have said (to each other) ‘Abandon not your gods;
abandon neither Wadd nor Suwa, neither Yaguth, nor
                    Ya-’uq, nor Nasr―”

                                                         (Qur’an: Nuh: 70: 23)

“Ibnu ‘Abbas r.a. said : These (the idols) were named after their
righteous (pious) people who had lived after Prophet Nuh a.s. era.”

“After their death, Satan instigated their followers to erect statues
at places where they used to worship (Allah), and to then named
              these statues with their names.”

All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
“Which their followers then erected, but they did not worship these
              statues.”

“When the first generation all died, they were replaced by
subsequent generation who were ignorant, and had forgotten the
              knowledge of the earlier generation.

Thence forth, they began to direct their worship to these idols
              (thereby, committed SHIRK).

All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
Thus, we can discern that the primary cause of SHIRK is ignorance
i.e. when they imitated blindly (TAQLEED) rituals in their worship
to Allah and blindly follow aspects of belief without knowledge
thereby opening themselves to Satan’s entrapment.

Thus we are warned by Allah SWT :

The word - - ( al-BID’AH) in Arabic means “Introduction
or creating something totally new without there being any
precedence before it”. Thus Allah SWT said:

“To Him is due the primal origin of the heavens and the earth”
                                                                      (Qur’an: Baqarah: 2: 117)

 Islamic scholars of FIQH differ as to what this term encompasses -
vis-á-vis “SUNNAH”. Thus, there are some who are strictly rigid in
their definition and regard, everything not specifically done by the
Prophet s.a.a.w. to be all “BID’AH ” – therefore to them, all are
these regarded as reprehensible and rejected.
 However, the majority Islamic scholars do not reject everything new
i.e. “BID’AH ” as reprehensible, but accept certain innovation which,
although not specifically done by the Prophet s.a.a.w., yet it has
valid SHAR’IAH basis – i.e. it is only ‘new’ in the specific, the type,
detail or method, but still manifesting the principles already
                established by Qur’an and As-Sunnah.

 Thus difference of opinion occur when Muslims respond to these
              questions:

“Are all BID’AH detested and disallowed (forbidden)?”

“Can BID’AH be categorised as BID’AH HASSANAH (good innovation)
and BID’AH SAY-YI’AH (bad or reprehensible innovation)?”

“Are there any other ways of categorization of BID’AH adopted by
              Islamic scholars of the SHARI’AH ? ”

“To proceed, verily the most truthful of sayings
is the Book of Allah, and the most favored of
guidance is the guidance of Muhammad, and the
most evil of affairs (SHAR-RAL-’UMUR) are matters
newly begun (MUHDAATHUHA), and every new
affairs is innovation (BID’AH), and (KULL) every
                             innovation (BID’AH) is misguidance (DOLAALAH),
and every misguidance will be in Hell-fire.”
(Hadith from Jabir r.a. reported by Muslim)

All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
ADDENDUM

 In this Hadith, since the phrase (MUHDAATHUHA) “newly begun
matters” comes after phrase asserting the pre-eminence of the Qur’an
and as-Sunnah, it imply that the “ new ” here is regarding any matter
which is completely detached from or opposed to these two.

 Although the Arabic term for “ (all) ” literally means “every”
yet it can also be used to mean “mostly “ as for this Hadith. And the
general term “BID’AH ” meaning “innovation (which is reprehensible)”
must be understood to be referring only to those new matters
(innovation) that does not have any SHARI’AH basis at all, or without
any religious sanctions regarding its validity and permissibility.

All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
ADDENDUM

 Unfortunately, there are some who still insist that the “all ” here
must mean “every” new matter where the Prophet s.a.a.w. has never
done or known to have specifically approved. Thus they often declare
others as being astray because of their rigid definition of “BID’AH”. But,
does the word ( KULL) used in Qur’an and Ahadith always
          means “every” without exception ?

 Majority of Islamic scholars do not insist on this one rigid literal
interpretation. This is because there are exception in the Qur’an where
the term “KULL” used does not necessarily mean “every ”.

the gates of all (good) things (KULLI-SHAI’), until, in the midst of their
enjoyment of Our gifts, on a sudden, We called them to account, when lo!

The term “ “ pronounced ‘ TWA-GHUUT ‘ usually
means “an idol; false god; seducer; tempter (towards error)” –
                related to “                       “ TAA-GHIYA” meaning “tyrant; oppressor;
                despot;”

All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
The root “ “ or “ “ meaning “ exceed proper
bounds; to be excessive; rage; tumultuous; to overcome; to
           tyrannize; oppress; terrorize; etc.”

Thus, it relates to “all evil forces that seek to lead mankind away
from Allah’s Way.” Be it false god, deviant doctrines or oppressive
           and unjust power.

Thus a Muslim, having attested to the Kalimah of Tauheed
(SHAHADATAIN), he is required to be wary and vigilant by
striving to embrace whole-heartedly the ways of Islam, and to
shun totally the ways of Satan (the embodiment of this evil is
                collectively referred to as TAGHUT.)

“O ye who believe! enter into Islam whole-heartedly; and follow
not the footsteps of the Evil One (SHAYTAN); for he is to you an
                avowed enemy.”

                                                       (Qur’an: Baqarah: 2: 208)

“Behold, thy Lord did call to him in the sacred valley to Tuwa―
Go thou to Pharaoh, for he has indeed (TAGHAA ) transgressed
                all bounds.”

                                                     (Qur’an: Naziat: 79: 16-17)

“Then he (Pharaoh) collected (his men) and made a

him― in the Hereafter, as in this life.”

                                                     (Qur’an: Naziat: 79: 23-25)

REFLECTION:

 Although many may imagine that “TAGHUT ” as only some
unseen ‘spiritual’ entity – as represented by the source of evil
i.e. the devil – yet the reality of “TAGHUT ” is in fact also the
deviationist teachings of Materialism, Secularism , which is
what ‘idolatry, love of worldly power, lust, greed etc.’ can be
categorised under, something so apparent and can be seen.

All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
REFLECTION:

 Satan’s deception is to lure mankind away from
IIMAN i.e. believing in the UNSEEN ( the Qur’an
refer to as “AL-GHAYB” ), the essential
fundamental belief of Muslims attaining to
                     TAQWA:

“(they are those ) who believe in the Unseen (BIL-GHAYB)”
                                                            (Qur’an: Baqarah: 2: 3)

All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
REFLECTION:

 Traditionally, in warning Muslims of “SHIRK”, our Muslim
teachers identified only the erroneous beliefs – e.g. myths
              (TAKHAYYUL), superstitions (KHURAFAT), sorcery (SIHIR),
etc. Thus we have to know what they are, so as to avoid.

Yet, the greatest threat to TAUHEED , which can become
a form of SHIRK to Allah, is “MATERIALISM,” “SECULARISM”
as an ideology – a belief to replace our AQEEDAH.

All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
REFLECTION:

 Thus ‘modern’ Muslims who pride themselves as being
intellectual, rational and ‘progressive’, who indeed may
have rejected myths (TAKHAYYUL) and superstitions
(KHURAFAT), yet they may still be followers of
“TAGHUT” – ideologies that will lead them away from
TAUHEED towards “SHIRK” ; from “Light” into
                      “Darkness”; from “Faith” to “Unbelief”.

                        things.”

REFLECTION:
From being a Muslim, one has to strive to be true believer – Mu’-
             meen.

Without which hypocrisy (NIFAQ) may afflict him.

Thus Islam commands us to continuously seek to acquire knowledge.
Especially regarding belief, our intellectual curiosity must not be left to
stray into either ‘blind-faith’ or ‘cynicism and doubts.’

A Muslim must always strive towards TAQWA, and not remain static.

‘AMAL (practice) striving towards TAQWA, this may lead one towards
             blind-faith, apathy, doubts and cynicism.

All these (‘blind-faith’ or ‘doubts and cynicism’) stemming from
IGNORANCE of the DEEN may even lead one to SHIRK and other sins,
             especially NIFAAQ (hypocrisy).

REFLECTION:
Such people with NIFAAQ, although still regarded as a MUSLIM,
would inwardly rejects Islam and undermine its teachings,
preferring other “isms”, or rules, even when these are contrary to
             the Islamic principles.

REFLECTION:
These Muslims, referred to as hypocrites, would outwardly insist
their loyalty and affiliation is with the Muslims, yet they are
               merely mocking Islam.

They may have a hidden agenda for this, because their true loyalty
is in fact with their ‘leaders’ whom Allah describes as their
               ‘Satans’ (SHAYAATIN).

REFLECTION:
Although it may seem that they are successful in their scheme,
this is only because Allah has gave them temporary leeway for
them as ISTIDRAJ, - and to be a test for all of us mankind.

Yet, the reality is that they (MUNAFIQUN) have no true direction
in life, they are astray, groping like the blind. Their objective is
only the fulfilment of their worldly desire (HAWA’) – being
doubtful and cynical even towards Islamic belief in the Hereafter.

REFLECTION:
Thus they would have no qualms in aligning themselves with the

Their sycophantic attitude towards even unjust and evil dictators
with their un-Islamic policies (TAGHUT), would baffle other true
Muslims, yet we cannot denounce them as KAFIRUN.

  • 6. REMEMBER ALSO OUR PROPHET’S CONCERN “Verily, what I fear the most for my community (ummah) is SHIRK (ascribing partners) to Allah. I am not saying that they will worship the sun or the moon or idols, but it is in their being insincere in doing good deeds, not intending it for Allah’s sake but only to please their hidden desires.” (Hadith reported by Ibnu Majah in “Kitab Az-Zuhdu”) All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
  • 7. REMEMBER ALSO OUR PROPHET’S CONCERN “Verily, what I fear most that may afflict all of you is the small SHIRK – which is - AR-RIYA’ (showing off or ostentation in ‘ibaadah)” (Hadith reported by Ahmad) All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
  • 8. REMEMBER ALSO OUR PROPHET’S CONCERN “The SHIRK within my ummah is more hidden (subtle) than a black ant crawling on a black rock, in the darkness of the night” (Hadith reported by Ahmad, Tabarani & Abu Ya’la) All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
  • 9. TO CONTINUE FROM PREVIOUS All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
  • 10. “From Ibnu ‘Abbas r.a. regarding Allah’s verse : "And they have said (to each other) ‘Abandon not your gods; abandon neither Wadd nor Suwa, neither Yaguth, nor Ya-’uq, nor Nasr―” (Qur’an: Nuh: 70: 23) All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
  • 11. “Ibnu ‘Abbas r.a. said : These (the idols) were named after their righteous (pious) people who had lived after Prophet Nuh a.s. era.” “After their death, Satan instigated their followers to erect statues at places where they used to worship (Allah), and to then named these statues with their names.” All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
  • 12. “Which their followers then erected, but they did not worship these statues.” “When the first generation all died, they were replaced by subsequent generation who were ignorant, and had forgotten the knowledge of the earlier generation. Thence forth, they began to direct their worship to these idols (thereby, committed SHIRK). All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
  • 13. Thus, we can discern that the primary cause of SHIRK is ignorance i.e. when they imitated blindly (TAQLEED) rituals in their worship to Allah and blindly follow aspects of belief without knowledge thereby opening themselves to Satan’s entrapment. Thus we are warned by Allah SWT : All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
  • 14. Thus, we can discern that the primary cause of SHIRK is ignorance i.e. when they imitated blindly (TAQLEED) rituals in their worship to Allah and blindly follow aspects of belief without knowledge thereby opening themselves to Satan’s entrapment. Thus we are warned by Allah SWT : “And pursue not that of which you have no knowledge; for every act of hearing, or of seeing or of feeling (in your heart-mind) will be enquired into (on the Day of Reckoning).” (Qur’an: Isra’: 17: 36) All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
  • 15. All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
  • 16. The Messenger of Allah (s.a.a.w.) said, "Recite these words: “(O Allah! Creator of the heavens and the earth! Knower of the hidden and the exposed! Robb (Lord, Sustainer) of everything and every one. I bear witness that none has the right to be worshipped but You. I seek Your Protection from the evil of my own self from the evil of Satan and from the evil of Shirk (to which he calls)."‘ (Hadith reported by Abu Dawud and Tirmidzi) All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
  • 17. All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
  • 18. All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
  • 19. Thus, holdfast to my Sunnah (ways or teachings) and the Sunnah (ways) of my rightly-guided successors (Khulafa’ rashidun) after me, and bite upon them (hold tightly to this teaching). Avoid (MUHDAATHAA AL-’UMUR) new (innovated) matters, for (KULL) every innovation (BID’AH) is misguidance (DOLALAH).” (Hadith from Jabir r.a. reported by Abu Dawud and Tirmidzi) All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
  • 20. ADDENDUM The word - - ( al-BID’AH) in Arabic means “Introduction or creating something totally new without there being any precedence before it”. Thus Allah SWT said: “To Him is due the primal origin of the heavens and the earth” (Qur’an: Baqarah: 2: 117) All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
  • 21. ADDENDUM  Islamic scholars of FIQH differ as to what this term encompasses - vis-á-vis “SUNNAH”. Thus, there are some who are strictly rigid in their definition and regard, everything not specifically done by the Prophet s.a.a.w. to be all “BID’AH ” – therefore to them, all are these regarded as reprehensible and rejected.  However, the majority Islamic scholars do not reject everything new i.e. “BID’AH ” as reprehensible, but accept certain innovation which, although not specifically done by the Prophet s.a.a.w., yet it has valid SHAR’IAH basis – i.e. it is only ‘new’ in the specific, the type, detail or method, but still manifesting the principles already established by Qur’an and As-Sunnah. All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
  • 22. ADDENDUM  Thus difference of opinion occur when Muslims respond to these questions: “Are all BID’AH detested and disallowed (forbidden)?” “Can BID’AH be categorised as BID’AH HASSANAH (good innovation) and BID’AH SAY-YI’AH (bad or reprehensible innovation)?” “Are there any other ways of categorization of BID’AH adopted by Islamic scholars of the SHARI’AH ? ” All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
  • 23. ADDENDUM All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
  • 24. ADDENDUM “To proceed, verily the most truthful of sayings is the Book of Allah, and the most favored of guidance is the guidance of Muhammad, and the most evil of affairs (SHAR-RAL-’UMUR) are matters newly begun (MUHDAATHUHA), and every new affairs is innovation (BID’AH), and (KULL) every innovation (BID’AH) is misguidance (DOLAALAH), and every misguidance will be in Hell-fire.” (Hadith from Jabir r.a. reported by Muslim) All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
  • 25. ADDENDUM  In this Hadith, since the phrase (MUHDAATHUHA) “newly begun matters” comes after phrase asserting the pre-eminence of the Qur’an and as-Sunnah, it imply that the “ new ” here is regarding any matter which is completely detached from or opposed to these two.  Although the Arabic term for “ (all) ” literally means “every” yet it can also be used to mean “mostly “ as for this Hadith. And the general term “BID’AH ” meaning “innovation (which is reprehensible)” must be understood to be referring only to those new matters (innovation) that does not have any SHARI’AH basis at all, or without any religious sanctions regarding its validity and permissibility. All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
  • 26. ADDENDUM  Unfortunately, there are some who still insist that the “all ” here must mean “every” new matter where the Prophet s.a.a.w. has never done or known to have specifically approved. Thus they often declare others as being astray because of their rigid definition of “BID’AH”. But, does the word ( KULL) used in Qur’an and Ahadith always means “every” without exception ?  Majority of Islamic scholars do not insist on this one rigid literal interpretation. This is because there are exception in the Qur’an where the term “KULL” used does not necessarily mean “every ”. All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
  • 27. ADDENDUM ONE TEXTUAL BASIS “But when they forget the warning they had received, We opened to them the gates of all (good) things (KULLI-SHAI’), until, in the midst of their enjoyment of Our gifts, on a sudden, We called them to account, when lo! they were plunged in despair!” ( Qur’an: An-’am: 6: 44)  Obviously here, one door of goodness (the exception), which was not opened for them was the door of Mercy .
