Faith without obedience is meaningless; and obedience without Faith is mere rituals and may even lead to hypocrisy. Together, Faith and Obedience must lead to Righteousness with IHSAN which essentially focus in our intention to sincerely serve Allah s.w.t. Thus, in these three aspects can one be said to be true in his submission to the Will of Allah (as Muslim).

    • Muslims have to be careful, as some of them may have already been influenced by Orientalist’s teachings garbed as Islamic, especially taught or disseminated amongst certain academicians.
    • There is today a confusion where people speaks about ‘many types of Islam’ whereas the truth is there is only one “ AD-DEEN-AL-ISLAM ”.
All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2011)
  • 9.
    • They are confused because they could not differentiate “ the religion ( DEEN )” itself from people’s “ understanding ( FIQH)” of the religion – between “ DEENUL-ISLAM ” with “ FIQHUL-ISLAM ”.
    • Past Muslim scholars are ever careful not to be presumptuous (arrogant even) to claim their FIQH to be the DEEN . This DEEN belongs to Allah s.w.t. whereas man can only claim to his FIQH of the Deen .
    • And it is the FIQH -“ understanding ” that can either be correct or incorrect, and ought to be subjected to checking and scrutiny in accordance with principles unanimously accepted by Islamic scholars (‘ULAMA ) since the time of the Prophet Muhammad s.a.a.w.

  • 10. All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2011) “ O you who have attained to faith! Pay heed unto Allah, and pay heed unto the Messenger and unto those from among you who have been entrusted with authority; and if you are at variance over any matter, refer it unto Allah and the Messenger, if you [truly] believe in Allah and the Last Day. This is the best [for you], and best in the end.” ( Qur’an: An-Nisa’: 4: 59 )
  • 11. All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2011) “ Those who listen to the Word, and follow the best (meaning) in it: those are the ones whom Allah has guided, and those are the ones endued with understanding.” ( Qur’an: Az-Zumar:39:18 )
  • 12. “ And whoever amongst you lives after me will see many conflicts (disagreements), let him then adhere to whatever they know o f my Sunnah and the Sunnah of my Rightly guided Khalifah.” ( Hadith reported by Ahmad ) PROPHET MUHAMMAD S.A.A.W. SAID: All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2011)
  • 13. All Rights Reserved © Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2011 ) Prophet Muhammad s.a.a.w. said:
  • 14. “ Whomsoever that Allah wishes for him goodness, He will make him a FAQIH (learned) in matters of the religion( Deen ); and for everything there is a pillar, and the pillar of this religion is AL-FIQH – (the profound understanding of the Deen ); a learned scholar (of the Deen ) is more difficult upon satan than a thousand worshippers.” ( Reported by Bukhary and Muslim ) All Rights Reserved © Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2011 ) Prophet Muhammad s.a.a.w. said:
  • 15. “ My ummah (community) will never agree upon matters which are erroneous” ( Hadith reported by Tirmidzi, Abu Dawud, Ibn Majah & Daruqutni ) PROPHET MUHAMMAD S.A.A.W. SAID: All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2011)
  • 16. All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2011) PROPHET MUHAMMAD S.A.A.W. SAID:
  • 17. “ (Honour) My successors ( Khulafa’ ), may Allah s.w.t. be Merciful towards them!.” He was asked: “ Who are your successors ( Khulafa’ ) O Messenger of Allah?” And he said: “ They are those who revive my Sunnah (Way or traditions) and teaches them to the servants of Allah.” ( Hadith of the Prophet s.a.w .) All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2011) PROPHET MUHAMMAD S.A.A.W. SAID:
  • 18. All Rights Reserved © Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2011 ) ” Verily this is knowledge (contains the rules) of the DEEN (Religion), so look thoroughly into the person from whom you acquire (the knowledge of) your DEEN (Religion).” Imam Muhammad ibnu Sirrin (rhm.a) advices and warns us Muslims:
  • 19.
    • Therefore this DEEN is the “ Absolute ” as Allah s.w.t. is Absolute, and those who doubt or deny this has not understood the clear assertion of Allah, or purposely twist its meaning and significance :
“ This day have I perfected your religion for you, completed my favour upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion.” ( Qur’an: Maa-idah: 5: 3 ) All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2011)
  • 20.
    • Their twisted logic is : “ since Man is imperfect, therefore their religion is imperfect and cannot be absolute .”
    • But, the DEEN of AL-ISLAM is not man-created but a religion based on revelations from the Divine, established through a perfected model in the life and teaching of Allah’s messenger Muhammad s.a.a.w. Its principles are firm and unchanging yet these principles accommodate certain flexibility regarding its application, in accordance with changing needs, situations and conditions. Thus it remain ever relevant.
    • Another fallacy is to equate “ KAAFFAH ” with “ SHUMUL ”, as though these are interchangeable.
All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2011)
  • 21.
    • “ KAAFFAH ” (sufficiently, whole-heartedly, fully etc.) pertains to man’s potential and capability. And Allah only expect them to give their fullest, for Allah does not put a burden greater than they can bear.
    • “ SHUMUL ” (or all-encompassing nature of AD-DEEN AL-ISLAM ), pertains to the perfect and Absolute aspect of Allah’s guidance, the fundamental rules and laws established by His final Prophet s.a.w.
All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2011)
  • 22.
    • It’s guiding principles and teaching are already perfected ( KAAMIL ) and which encompasses every aspect of man’s life, with adequate principles for dynamism in its implementation to face whatever possible problem that the future may hold for mankind.
    • And if it is not “ SHUMUL ”, then another Prophet would be needed, and this in fact is a denial of the perfection of AD-DEEN-AL-ISLAM – it tantamount to ‘unbelief’ ( KUFR ).
All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2011)
  • 23.
    • To say that Muslim’s understanding of Islam is “ evolving ” towards a much better Islam, is not only inaccurate but downright erroneous (mischievous).
    • Each era requires it’s own unique solution. If Muslims attained to correct interpretation, than that is regarded as good irrespective of whether it is done in the past or in the modern present. Even erroneous interpretation cannot be binding to others, nay, it can be criticised and corrected. Yet, the principles of this DEEN remain unchanged. Evolving into following error and deviancy and can never be good.
All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2011)
  • 24.
    • In fact after the best three generation ( SALAFUS-SOLIHEEN ), accretions and deviations have occurred within the Muslim mind regarding this DEEN . Thus the emergence of Islamic scholars who strived to preserve the purity of this religion through the endeavour termed as “ TAJDEED ” (renewal). And this does nor imply “ replacement ” of its principle teachings.
    • We are not against changing for the better and embracing ‘progress’ in facing the reality of contemporary needs and circumstances. But we have to beware, “ Evolution ” that they advocate may even lead to replacement when innovations ( BID’AH ) are introduced directed towards total change in the principles (overhauling) of this DEEN .
All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2011)
  • 25.
    • These academicians would not admit that their methodology – which is from a humanist sociological study and perspective - is in fact imposing a false parallel, advocating that contemporary Muslims should imitate the ‘Judeo-Christian’ historical experience.
    • Their error may perhaps be due to their assuming that “ AL-ISLAM ” is exactly similar to (if not implying that Islam is copying from earlier religions ), and therefore must inevitably undergo the same historical process as that of the “Judaic-Christianity” – indeed a mischievous suggestion and rather simplistic and misplaced analogy.
All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2011)
  • 26.
    • AD-DEEN-AL-ISLAM , as established by Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. in fact, was Divinely revealed to complete that process in which the “ People of the Book ” went through historically but have erred because they have ‘ evolved ’ their religion into something contrary to the universal message of every Prophet of Allah.
    • Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. came to stem that ‘ evolution ’, by referring and inviting them back to the pristine ABRAHAMIC creed of TAUHEED . It was a ‘ devolution ’ back to the principles rather than ‘ evolution ’.
All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2011)
  • 27.
    • Lest it be misconstrued, man’s development entailing change for the betterment (or what is regarded as progress) is not in any way to be curtailed.
    • Only that the changes must not be made to the universal principles and the established foundation of this DEEN . Tampering with these is deviancy clearly condemned by Allah and His Messenger (in Al-QUR’AN and AS-SUNNAH ).
    • Beware, clamouring blindly for “Evolution” may even lead to “replacement” i.e. to total change even in the principles of this DEEN .
    • WaAllaahu a’-lam

  • 28. “ Do they seek for other than the Religion of Allah?―While all creatures in the heavens and on earth have willing, or unwilling, bowed to His Will (accepted ‘Islam’), and to Him shall they all be brought back.” ( Qur’an: Aali ‘Imran: 3: 83 ) All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2011)

  • 30. “ Now then, for that (reason), call (them to the Faith), and stand steadfast as thou art commanded nor follow thou their vain desires; but say: "I believe in the Book which Allah has sent down; and I am commanded to judge justly between you. Allah is Our Lord and your Lord. For us (is the responsibility for) Our deeds, and for you for your deeds. There is no contention between us and you. Allah will bring us together, and to Him is (Our) final goal.” ( Qur’an: ash-Shura: 42: 15 ) All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2011)
  • 31.
    • The word “ Islam ” - literally means “ surrender ; submission ”. When added with the prefix “ al ” ( definite article“ t he ” - to denote a name) it refers to the essential traits of this religion signifying an external manifestation of one’s inner conviction, belief ( iiman ) towards “ obedience to the will of Allah ”.
    • The true meaning of “ believe ” or “ iiman ” is :
“ to be convinced in one’s heart/mind ( Qolb ); and declare with one’s tongue, and practice deeds in accordance with its pillars ” All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2011)
  • 32.
    • So “ how does one begin to submit to Allah’s will ”?
    • This was succinctly enumerated by Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. in what is referred to as :
    • the Pillars of Islam
    • ( Arkaan-ul-Islaam ).
All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2011)
  • 33. Islam is built upon Five (pillars): [1] To bear witness that there is no god except Allah, and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah; [2] And to establish the (Daily obligatory) Swolah; [3] And pay out the Zakah (tax on wealth); [4] And to make pilgrimage (Hajj) to the House) for those who has the means to (do) it; [5] And to Fast (daily) in Ramadhan. All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2011)
  • 34.
    • As believe or conviction resides in a person’s heart, there is a need to first express ones’ commitment verbally – declaring it to others such that it becomes a solemn pledge or a promise, as well as a sign of one’s entrance into a social & spiritual contract with the universal community as Muslim.
    • So, the gateway into Islam is simple. Yet, this entrance – verbal declaration - leads to a whole program to be implemented so as to ‘build’ a truly Muslim personality of one who submits his whole-self to the Will of the Creator.
All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2011)
  • 35.
    • Thus, the five pillars must be regarded as that educational and developmental program to nurture a total personality of “ one who submits ” ( MUSLIM ).
    • Each of these five pillars, contains the medium through which the deeper meanings must impact a Muslim – leading to yet higher consciousness of how to transform his entire life into one of complete submission to the Will of Allah. For to be a Muslim is about “ bein g” and “ becoming ”. It’s about ‘ haal ’ (spiritual state) and ‘ maqom ’ (station).
All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2011)
  • 36.
    • For to submit to Allah is to be in the ‘presence ’ with every witnesses of the Truth of the Lordship and Sovereignty of the One and only God – Allah, Who Alone is Deity worthy of worship; upholding and standing firm with justice, in accordance with the Way of life ( DEEN ) as established by His Final Messenger Muhammad s.a.w.
All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2011)
  • 37.
    • As these five pillars are inter-related, beginning with a solemn commitment, a Muslim is to strive to fulfil all these – as these are to be regarded as a FARDH ‘AIN (a personal obligation) unto those who enter into Islam:
All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2011) “ O ye who believe! enter into Islam whole-heartedly (fully); and follow not the footsteps of the Evil One; for he is to you an avowed enemy.” (Qur’an: Surah al-Baqorah: 2: 208 )

  • 39. They will be companions of the fire, to dwell therein (for ever).” ( Qur’an: Baqarah: 2: 257-258 ) All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2011)

  • 54.
    • No one should be forced to embrace Islam.
    • A person is expected to enter into it willingly, with full certainty of the basic truth that there is no god except Allah and that Muhammad is the messenger of Allah.
    • Those who are born into a Muslim family needs to be nurtured with the correct understanding of Islam to attain certainty .
All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2011)
  • 55.
    • Thus, the declaration marks a person’s commitment towards adhering to all that Islam teaches.
    • It is in fact a covenant between him and Allah – to be witnessed at least by other Muslims because he will be accorded every rights and respect as fellow Muslims; as much as other Muslims have rights over him.
All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2011)
  • 56.
    • Amongst these are for Muslims to exhort one another towards truth and patient constancy; making du’a for one another; protecting each others rights and dignity; assisting in all matters leading to al-Birr (Goodness) and al-Taqwa (consciousness of Allah) with love for one another for the sake of Allah.
    • When a person enters or embraces Islam, his/her past sins are forgiven and erased whereas record of their good deeds remains. This is similar to Muslims whose repentance have been accepted by Allah.
