  • 40.  In exceptional cases where water is not available or cannot be used, the alternative to an obligatory bath (ghusl’) and ablution (wudhu’) is TAYAMMUM (dry ablution using sand or dust).  With intention, the palm of the hands are tapped on the surface of sand or earth, where there is fine dust.  Blow any coarse sand away and then wipe the face with the palms, top downwards, only once.  Repeat the tapping the second time and wipe the two hands up to elbow, right and left (it must be done in this order.)
