1. 1. “ TADZKIRAH FOR RAMADHAN (2010)” ISLAMIC DA’WAH : “ ... THE NEGLECTED LEGACY OF THE PROPHET S.A.W. " REFLECTION ON THE THEME IN-HOUSE TALK FOR THE “MABUHAY CLUB” DARUL ARQAM, Muslim Converts’ Association, SINGAPORE BY: USTAZ ZHULKEFLEE HJ ISMAIL 5.15 – 6.45 pm 5, RAMADHAN 1431 (HIJRIYAH) @ GALAXY, CHANGI ROAD (GEYLANG), SINGAPORE. SESSION # 1 (15 August 2010) AllRightsReserved©Zhulkeflee2010
  2. 2. WHY CHOOSE THIS THEME ? “ A person is said to be guilty of sin not only when he commits a wrong, .... but don’t forget that, when he neglects (omits) to carry out a duty too, he is also guilty of sin.” AllRightsReserved©Zhulkeflee2010
  3. 3. WHY CHOOSE THIS THEME ? With regard to the duty of “ Da’wah ”, many mosques and organizations may only be looking at what they have done, and applaud them for it. Yet, can we dare say we have fulfilled our Fardh kifaaya (community obligation) adequately? AllRightsReserved©Zhulkeflee2010
  4. 4. WHY CHOOSE THIS THEME ? Thus, this series of talk may be critical of our shortcomings in Da’wah , which in no way deny whatever good works already done. It will focus on what may not have been done, or what perhaps may have been neglected (ignored or forgotten) to be fulfil adequately ( fardh kifaaya ), as we are still accountable for them and would be held against us for them, in Allah’s judgement. AllRightsReserved©Zhulkeflee2010
  5. 5. WHY CHOOSE THIS THEME ? Also, some in our community may have (knowingly or unknowingly) imitated or applied methods, criteria and standards, quite opposed to that of Islam, in our Da’wah approach. Shouldn’t we be seeking the Qur’anic and Prophetic ways? Perhaps the do not know. Or have they no faith? AllRightsReserved©Zhulkeflee2010
  6. 6. A VERY IMPORTANT REMINDER : AllRightsReserved©Zhulkeflee2010 “ The best amongst you is one who learns the Qur’an and who teaches it (the Qur’an).” ( Hadith of the Prophet s.a.w . Reported by Bukhary)
  7. 7.

” Ramadan is the (month) in which was sent down the Qur'an as a guide to mankind, also clear (Signs) for guidance and judgment (between right and wrong).”

( Qur’an: Baqarah: 2:185 )

AllRightsReserved©Zhulkeflee2010 LET US REFLECT Slideshare unable to upload the Qur’anic Arabic Fonts without errors -– please refer to a Mushaf
  8. 8. SOME REFLECTIONS:

In this verse, what is striking to me is the phrase “ the Qur'an as a guide to mankind, also clear (Signs) for guidance and judgment (between right and wrong).”

Perhaps .... We Muslims (in Singapore) may have forgotten some fundamental principles of what Islam is; its full history of how it was established and spread; its aims and purpose; the important legacy and how our forefathers were guided, persuaded by the early Muslims callers ( Du’at ); our role as the continuing generation; etc......

AllRightsReserved©Zhulkeflee2010
  9. 9. SOME REFLECTIONS:

The topic : “Islamic Da’wah: the neglected legacy of the Prophet s.a.w.” – may provoke some Muslims here to object, or to be cynical and brush it aside as though it merits no concern thinking – “we have not neglected Da’wah – never! How dare you.”

Well, firstly for starters, the theme of topic contains key words (subjects) which require each of us to sincerely question our own understanding of them.

Are we up to it ?

AllRightsReserved©Zhulkeflee2010
  10. 10. SOME REFLECTIONS:

What do we mean “ Islamic Da’wah ”?

Do our understanding of what constitute “ the legacy of the Prophet ” includes “ Da’wah ” as an important pillar?

Yes! But “ Da’wah ” towards whom? Who are the object, the recipient of Da’wah and what are we to offer them?

Is there any difference between Muslims and non-Muslims?

How should “ Da’wah ” be done? And by whom? What is required of him?

AllRightsReserved©Zhulkeflee2010
  11. 11. WHAT “ DA’WAH ” MEANS TO ME Clarifying a confusion .... AllRightsReserved©Zhulkeflee2010
  12. 12.

“ Call thou (all mankind) unto the way of Thy Lord, with wisdom and goodly exhortation, and argue with them in the most kindly manner: for behold, thy Lord knows best as to who strays from His path, and best knows He as to who are the right-guided”

( Qur’an: an-Nahl : 16 : 125 )

“ Da’wah” – what it means to me…. AllRightsReserved©Zhulkeflee2010 Slideshare unable to upload the Qur’anic Arabic Fonts without errors -– please refer to a Mushaf
  13. 13. REFLECTIONS:

The command to “ Da’wah ” – call or invite – is towards all mankind.

Obviously it was originally directed towards all the non-Muslims. Lest we forgot, our Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. began alone and was sent to invite the rest of his people to this final message of Allah ( ad-Deen al-Islam ).

The Ummah of his Da’wah are in fact all mankind since his time till the end of the world ( Qiyaamah ).

AllRightsReserved©Zhulkeflee2010
  14. 14.

“ We sent thee not (O Muhammad), but as a mercy for all creatures. (all the worlds)”

( Qur’an: Anbiya’ : 21: 107 )

“ Da’wah” – what it means to me…. AllRightsReserved©Zhulkeflee2010 Slideshare unable to upload the Qur’anic Arabic Fonts without errors -– please refer to a Mushaf
  15. 15.

“ Say (O Muhammad): "O my Servants who have transgressed against their souls! Despair not of the Mercy of Allah: for Allah forgives all sins: for He is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.”

( Qur’an: Zumar : 39: 53 )

“ Da’wah” – what it means to me…. AllRightsReserved©Zhulkeflee2010 Slideshare unable to upload the Qur’anic Arabic Fonts without errors -– please refer to a Mushaf
  16. 16.

“ and We have sent down unto thee (also) the Message; that thou mayest explain clearly to men what is sent for them, and that they may give thought.”

( Qur’an: Nahlu : 16 : 44 )

“ Da’wah” – what it means to me…. AllRightsReserved©Zhulkeflee2010 Slideshare unable to upload the Qur’anic Arabic Fonts without errors -– please refer to a Mushaf
  17. 17.

“ Indeed, there has come unto you (O mankind) a Messenger (Prophet Muhammad) from among yourselves: heavily weighs upon him [the thought] that you might suffer [in the life to come]; full of concern for you [is he, and] full of compassion and mercy towards the believers”

( Qur’an: at-Tawbah : 9 : 128 )

“ Da’wah” – what it means to me…. AllRightsReserved©Zhulkeflee2010 Slideshare unable to upload the Qur’anic Arabic Fonts without errors -– please refer to a Mushaf
  18. 18. REFLECTIONS:

This ayat is addressed to the whole of mankind, not merely Muslims.

The phrase: “ heavily weighs upon him [the thought] that you might suffer [in the life to come]; full of concern for you [is he] ” was specifically describing our Prophet Muhammad’s feeling towards all mankind who are invited to accept the call.

Whereas: “full of compassion and mercy towards the believers” describes his attitude towards those who have believed and would not harbour any enmity and aggression towards the believing community.

AllRightsReserved©Zhulkeflee2010
  19. 19.

“ It is He Who has sent amongst the Unlettered a messenger from among themselves, to rehearse to them His Signs, to sanctify them, and to instruct them in Scripture and Wisdom― although they had been, before, in manifest error― ”

( Qur’an: Juma’ah : 61: 2 )

“ Da’wah” – what it means to me…. AllRightsReserved©Zhulkeflee2010 Slideshare unable to upload the Qur’anic Arabic Fonts without errors -– please refer to a Mushaf
  20. 20.

“ As well as (to confer all these benefits upon) others of them, who have not already joined them: and He is Exalted in Might, Wise. Such is the Bounty of Allah, which He bestows on whom He will: and Allah is the Lord of the highest bounty."

( Qur’an: Jumu’ah : 61: 3-4 )

AllRightsReserved©Zhulkeflee2010 “ Da’wah” – what it means to me…. Slideshare unable to upload the Qur’anic Arabic Fonts without errors -– please refer to a Mushaf
  21. 21. REFLECTIONS:

This aayat describes concisely the Da’wah and educative role of the Prophet s.a.w. in moulding a whole generation with al-Islam . Indeed he was the educator par excellance .

He left that legacy to this generation to continue the task to share the same benefit of al-Islam to every other people on the face of this earth, until the end of the world.

Although we may not be “ Da-’i ” (caller of people to Islam), with our lives as Muslims, we are to be witnessed by every nation.

AllRightsReserved©Zhulkeflee2010
  22. 22.

“ Thus have We made of you an Ummah justly balanced That ye (with your life) might be witnesses over the nations and the Messenger a witness over yourselves;”

( Qur’an: Baqarah: 2: 143 )

AllRightsReserved©Zhulkeflee2010 “ Da’wah” – what it means to me…. Slideshare unable to upload the Qur’anic Arabic Fonts without errors -– please refer to a Mushaf
  23. 23.

“ Whosoever shows to another (ways) towards the doing of a goodness, for him will be the same reward as the doer of that goodness.”

( Hadith of the Prophet )

AllRightsReserved©Zhulkeflee2010 “ Da’wah” – what it means to me…. مَنْ دَلَّ عَلَى خَيْرٍ فَلَهُ مِثْلُ أَجْرِ فَاعِلِهِ الدَّلُّ عَلَى الْخَيْرِ كَفَاعَلِهِ “ The one who shows others (ways towards the doing of) goodness is of the same stature (in deserving rewards as) those who are doing it.” ( Hadith of the Prophet by Bazzar and Tabarany )
  24. 24.

“ And when Allah guides through you (your sincere effort), a single person (to Islam), (the reward) for you is better than the whole world and whatever it contains.”

( Hadith of the Prophet )

AllRightsReserved©Zhulkeflee2010 “ Da’wah” – what it means to me…. وَأَنْ يَهْدِيَّ اللهُ بِكَ رَجُلاً وَاحِدًا خَيْرٌ لَكَ مِنَ الدُّنْيَا وَمَا فِيْهَ
  25. 25. CLARIFICATION Differentiating the General from the Specific (technical) terms used. AllRightsReserved©Zhulkeflee2010
  26. 26. MEANINGS OF TERMS BETWEEN GENERAL AND SPECIFIC (DETAIL)

DA’WAH – today, has been understood generally, to refer to every initiatives to call people towards adhering to every teachings of Islam, without any distinction with regards to the audience concerned ( al-mad-’uun ).

Unfortunately in Singapore, every religious activity amongst Muslims are termed as “ Da’wah ” activity as though Da’wah is only meant for Muslims, whereas the original meaning refers to “ calling every one towards Islam ” especially the non-Muslims.

AllRightsReserved©Zhulkeflee2010
  27. 27.

DA’WAH – in the original sense refers to the calling of all mankind (unbelievers) to Islam.

MEANINGS OF TERMS BETWEEN GENERAL AND SPECIFIC (DETAIL) AllRightsReserved©Zhulkeflee2010

In matters of Islam, we Muslims (in Singapore) generally may have become ‘ localized ’ (insular and exclusive) to the extent that we only think as though “Islam” is only for us, and about us.

Every activities pertaining to Islam are deemed only for us Muslims.

  28. 28. MEANINGS OF TERMS BETWEEN GENERAL AND SPECIFIC (DETAIL) AllRightsReserved©Zhulkeflee2010

All our “ Islamic Da’wah resources ” (if any it seems) are geared only towards the 16% Muslims of the nation’s population (Singapore). We have all along neglected the 84% (non-Muslims).

Some Muslims here, are so afraid to speak of doing direct “ Da’wah ” towards non-Muslims. They even deemed this (the Prophetic Qur’anic method of Da’wah ) as being confrontational – outdated!

DA’WAH – in the original sense refers to the calling of all mankind (unbelievers) to Islam.

  29. 29. MEANINGS OF TERMS BETWEEN GENERAL AND SPECIFIC (DETAIL)

DA’WAH – in the original sense refers to the calling of all mankind (unbelievers) to Islam.

AllRightsReserved©Zhulkeflee2010

Some (indirect) approach towards the non-Muslims in “ Interfaith Dialogue ” events may perhaps been done. Albeit, only because it is encouraged - to showcase religious harmony in our nation. Yet, they are claiming this, as their efforts in doing “ Da’wah ” (they called it “non-confrontational type”). Really?

To ‘ confront ’ does not necessarily mean that one must be “aggressive, intolerant, discourteous etc.”

  30. 30. MEANINGS OF TERMS BETWEEN GENERAL AND SPECIFIC (DETAIL)

DA’WAH – in the original sense refers to the calling of all mankind (unbelievers) to Islam.

AllRightsReserved©Zhulkeflee2010

The Qur’an already stipulates we must do it: “with wisdom and goodly exhortation, and argue with them in the most kindly manner”

So as not to be misunderstood, I am not against Interfaith dialogue, or efforts in building bridges with others, or promotion of religious and racial harmony amongst our comrades and citizens in this, our beloved nation.

  31. 31. MEANINGS OF TERMS BETWEEN GENERAL AND SPECIFIC (DETAIL)

DA’WAH – in the original sense refers to the calling of all mankind (unbelievers) to Islam.

AllRightsReserved©Zhulkeflee2010

The concern is our (Muslims) honesty of claiming to be doing “ Da’wah ” when that effort, when judged by the criteria from Al-Qur’an and As-Sunnah , it may not qualify as to be regarded as “ Da’wah ” in the true sense. Some dare to regard these criterion as archaic.

They justify it by saying: “Those old methods are foolish and outdated, we must now be wise. Be pragmatic we do not want the others to dislike us!”

  32. 32. MEANINGS OF TERMS BETWEEN GENERAL AND SPECIFIC (DETAIL)

DA’WAH – in the original sense refers to the calling of all mankind (unbelievers) to Islam.

AllRightsReserved©Zhulkeflee2010

Yet these people conveniently ignored or forgotten that they have been commanded by Allah to be sincere, even if this be hated:

مُخلِصِينَ لَهُ الدِّينَ وَلَو كَرِهَ الكَـٰفِرُونَ

“ ... be sincere (making religion pure for Allah only), however much the disbelievers be averse –”

( Qur’an: Ghofir: 40: 15 )

  33. 33.

DA’WAH – in the original sense refers to the calling of mankind (unbelievers).

MEANINGS OF TERMS BETWEEN GENERAL AND SPECIFIC (DETAIL) AllRightsReserved©Zhulkeflee2010

And those Muslims engaged in this “Interfaith dialogue” have to be honest and sincerely admit what their motives and objectives for doing so are – Is it for Islamic Da’wah or merely to comply with other agendas? To be in the mainstream?

Have they considered or have any regard for the “Usul ad-Da’wah” and the “Fiqh-hud-Da’wah” ?

Isn’t Truth supposed to confront falsehood?

  34. 34.

DA’WAH – in the original sense refers to the calling of mankind (unbelievers).

MEANINGS OF TERMS BETWEEN GENERAL AND SPECIFIC (DETAIL) AllRightsReserved©Zhulkeflee2010

Afraid to confront and yet claim to be doing “ Da’wah ” ?

“ Let’s accept that everybody is right and nobody is wrong?”

LAA-HAU-LA WA LAA-QUW-WA-TA IL-LA BIL-LAAH !

  35. 35.

DA’WAH – in the original sense refers to the calling of mankind (unbelievers).

MEANINGS OF TERMS BETWEEN GENERAL AND SPECIFIC (DETAIL) AllRightsReserved©Zhulkeflee2010

And they should be reminded that this religion of al-Islam is also called Ad-Deen-ul-Haqq (the religion of Truth):

Slideshare unable to upload the Qur’anic Arabic Fonts without errors -– please refer to a Mushaf
