1. 1. “ Towards becoming Muslims - and its challenges.” - preliminary reflections Part 2: Ustaz Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail @ Masjid Sultan Annex, Singapore 1st Rabi’u thani 1430AH 28 th March 2009 ©2009ZhulkefleeHjIsmail
  3. 3. Why this topic?

“ O you who have attained to faith! Be conscious of Allah (TAQWA) with a true consciousness, and do not allow death to overtake you unless you are (in state of submission to Allah) in Islam.”

( Qur’an: Aali ‘Imran: 3: 102)

©2009ZhulkefleeHjIsmail
  4. 4. My reflections:

Muslims are warned against being disunited. BEWARE : Beginning of disunity when key Islamic terms are purposely slanted, distorted, alien standards imposed, innovated into Islamic discourse …

IMPERATIVE QUESTION

There is a single common bond- the rope from Allah. “What is this rope?”

Imperative for Muslims to re-visit: “... how do we learn our Islam”?

“ Whom do we seek to learn Islam from?”

©2009ZhulkefleeHjIsmail
  5. 5. THINK ! SERIOUSLY AND IN ALL HONESTY ...

Do we study Islam as a subject? Or do we subject ourselves to Islam?

Do we simply teach Islamic subjects? Or do we strive to nurture Islamic values to our students? What value?

AS MUSLIMS ...

AS FOR THOSE WHO ASSUME ROLE AS ‘TEACHERS’ ON ISLAM .....

©2009ZhulkefleeHjIsmail
  6. 6. So far, our discussion was regarding: PERSONAL/INDIVIDUAL CHALLENGE IN TRAVERSING PATH FROM BEING A MUSLIM مُسْلِم TOWARDS BEING ULTIMATELY A MUT-TAQEE – مُتَّقِى ©2009ZhulkefleeHjIsmail
  7. 7. TO CONTINUE ©2009ZhulkefleeHjIsmail
  8. 8.

Challenge: From being Muslim to being Mu’meen….

( Qur’an: Al- Ankabut : 29:2-6)

©2009ZhulkefleeHjIsmail
  9. 9.

Challenge: From being Muslim to being Mu’meen….

“ Do men think that they will be left alone on saying "We believe" and that they will not be tested?

We did test those before them, and Allah will certainly know those who are true from those who are false.”

( Qur’an: Al- Ankabut : 29:2-6)

©2009ZhulkefleeHjIsmail
  10. 10. Remember …………….

( Qur’an: Al- Hujurat: 49: 14-15 )

©2009ZhulkefleeHjIsmail
  11. 11. Remember …………….

The desert Arabs, say "We believe." Say "Ye have no faith; but ye (only) say `We have submitted our wills to Allah.' for not yet has Faith entered your hearts. But if ye obey Allah and His Messenger, He will not belittle aught oft your deeds: for Allah is Oft-Forgiving Most Merciful.”

Only those are Believers who have believed in Allah and His Messenger and have never since doubted but have striven with their belongings and their persons in the Cause of Allah: Such are the true (sincere) ones.

( Qur’an: Al- Hujurat: 49: 14-15 )

©2009ZhulkefleeHjIsmail
  13. 13. My reflections:

Imam Muhammad ibnu Sirin r.a. said:

” Verily this is knowledge (contains the rules) of the DEEN (Religion), so look thoroughly into the person from whom you acquire (the knowledge of) your DEEN Religion.”

NOTE : The difference between ma’lumat ( مَعْلُومَة ) and ‘ilm ( ع ِلْمٌ )

©2009ZhulkefleeHjIsmail
  14. 14.

” The likeness of those who are entrusted with the Law of Moses, yet apply it not, is as the likeness of the ass (donkey) carrying books. Wretched is the likeness of folk who deny the revelations of Allah. And Allah guides not wrongdoing folk.” (Qur’an: Surah Jum’ah: 62: 5)

NOTE : The difference between ma’lumat ( مَعْلُومَة ) and ‘ilm ( عِلْمٌ )

©2009ZhulkefleeHjIsmail
  15. 15. What is ‘ilm ( عِلْمٌ ) ‘knowledge’?

Amongst the definitions:

“ ... Knowledge is the arrival ( husul ) of the meaning ( ma’na ) of a thing or object of knowledge in the soul of the subject; and simultaneously,..... Knowledge is the soul’s arrival ( wusul ) at the meaning of that thing or the object of knowledge.”

By “ meaning ” ( ma’na ) is: “the recognition of the proper place of anything in a system ...”

©2009ZhulkefleeHjIsmail
  16. 16. What is ‘ilm ( عِلْمٌ ) ‘knowledge’?

Thus, perspective of Education in Islam can be defined:

“ ... 18. 18. Reflect:

“ O ye who believe! put not yourselves forward before Allah and His Messenger: but be conscious of Allah: for Allah is He who hears and knows all things.”

( Qur’an: al-Hujurat: 49: 1 )

©2009ZhulkefleeHjIsmail
