Kampung Glam is an urban area in Singapore that originated as a Malay settlement. The name "Kampung Glam" comes from the Melaleuca trees that were abundant there. It became the residence of the Sultan of Singapore and developed into a diverse, cosmopolitan Muslim community with people from Java, the Middle East, and India. At the heart of Kampung Glam is the Sultan Mosque, built in the early 20th century to serve the religious needs of the multi-ethnic Muslim population. Today Kampung Glam retains landmarks reflecting its history as the center of Singapore's Malay and Muslim community.
